They got two more years of drafting twice in the 1st round and still have an excellent opportunity to build a good team.
We need to hit on those 3rd & later rounds as well.

gotta find a way to keep the Ben Jones, DJ Reader, & Justin Reids.

Lopez needs to continue to develop. Jordan needs to develop, Nico…

I know you know what I’m saying. This year it’s Pierce, Booker, & Quitoriano.

Caserio has shown he can find talent in the later rounds, that's a good sign for the future.

Really? Like who? Jordan, Wallow and Lopez are the only later round picks he's made until this weekend. Jordan didn't suit up for 7 games and Wallow barely saw the field. Lopez did start but was he only doing so because it was a bad Texans team?

Now if you're talking about his NE days, maybe so. Don't follow others drafts very closely. But he hasn't done it here yet.

Round 1, Pick 3: LSU CB Derek Stingley Jr
Grade: I
(incomplete)
LisFranc! ***MEDICAL ALERT**** Start with the Defense. This could turn out to be an A+ or an F-. If he makes a couple of pro bowls and signs a big-time 2nd contract, A+. If he doesn't, F-. This was a Lovie and Dino Vasso pick.

Round 1, Pick 15: TAMU OG Kenyon Green
Grade: C

Now it's offense turn. I'm an Alex Gibbs fan who believed you can find your Brandon Brooks and Ben Jones in the middle of a draft. Green's Combine and Pro Day performances were something you would find in the draft on Day 3. Part of the grade is because of not trading back with Pittsburgh and adding a 2nd RD, pick 52. Green may've been there at #20. If not there were 5-6 really good players who were. This was a George Warhop pick.

Round 2, Pick 37: Baylor DB Jalen Pitre
Grade: A+

Defense turn. This could turn out to be the Texan's best draft pick. His production and athleticism are worthy and warrant this pick. This was a Lovie and Joe Danna pick.

Round 2, Pick 44: Alabama WR John Metchie III
Grade: C

Offense turn. Part of the grade is for trading up. This pick should've been part of the DW4 trade. Metchie is currently an IR player. This was clearly a Pep pick. Pep strongly recruited Metchie when Pep was at Michigan. As the Texans OC Pep had the power to convince all a trade was a must for Metchie. Metchie could turn out to be Texans' best WR in a few years. Pep thinks Metchie fits his system well.

Round 3, Pick 75: Alabama LB Christian Harris
Grade C

Defense turn. Lovie throws his son a Miles Smith a bone to make this pick. Usually can't go wrong when drafting an Alabama player. Harris is an undersized tweener and could end up being used as a hybrid LB-S. Had Texans not traded up and taken Harris at #80 - GRADE B

Round 4, Pick 107: Florida RB Dameon Pierce
Grade: C

Offense Turn. Smaller slower back, Florida QB was their best rusher. Looks to be JAG with limited production. Was never used extensively at FLA so there is not a lot of wear and tear on his body. Heard Caserio say Texans have a lot of good RBs on this team (had to scratch my head) and Pierce would've to earn a place on the field. Special teamer? A Frank Ross and/or Danny Barrett pick.

Round 5, Pick 150: Stanford DT Thomas Booker
Grade: B

Defense turn. This sounds like Lovie and Pep picking up the phone and calling David Shaw and asking David is their player at Stanford not drafted that can play in the NFL. From a standpoint if Booker does not make it as a starter he appears he would be welcomed and improved with added depth.

Round 5, Pick 170: Oregon State TE Teagan Quitoriano
Grade: C

Offense turn. Pep's running game sometimes consists of a 3 TE set. This guy is a blocking TE and probably won't see many passes thrown his way. Pep may have 1 or 2 pass plays for him but that's it. Will be a special teams guy. This is a Pep/Frank Ross/Tim Berbenich pick.

Round 6, Pick 205: LSU RT Austin Deculus
Grade: C

Oops offense gets a back to back. Likely a guy Warhop saw at his Pro Day and sees as an improvement as back up and he has Warhop's love of 34" arms. Because he's an OL wise choice in 6th RD he gets a C grade instead of a D.

Final Grade: C, could upgrade to a B- based on how well Stingley performs.
As an added part of my grade the Texans had at one time 13 picks and they drafted 9 players. They did not resort to trading any 2023 draft picks. I'll give them a B for those efforts. And if 8 of the drafted players can make the team and sign at least a 4-year contract I'll give them an A for that. If this were to happen that would bump up my grade to B- and if Stingly pans out a B+. And if Stingley is a bust C-.

The good news on Stingly is he ran fast and jumped high at his pro day. The bad news on Stingly is he has not played one down of football since 2019 which justifies using the #3 pick to draft him. Lovie has already told Stingley that his job every Sunday is to cover the #1 WR. Hold on to your horses and get your popcorn ready, we're in for a heck of a ride.

Stingley out-grades every measurable over Sauce. He wanted to play through his injury this year and was told no by his agent and coaching staff.

This dude went through turmoil with a head coach that tried to sweep a harassment complaint under the rug whilst going through a nasty divorce due to the crazy stories swirling in Baton Rouge about his womanizing. Players were even on record as saying it was a distraction to the team. Stingley was still and All-SEC in 2020 so this isn’t just about 2019.

There are stories that he locked up Chase and Jefferson in practice most of the time. Stingley is a generational talent so when people say the Texans didn’t make a splash, they are sorely mistaken.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
All is well and good but it remains that Stingley has not played a single down of football that is worthy of a 1st RD pick since 2019. Chase and Jefferson stories are before his LisFranc injury. Stingley will line up against the #1 WR every Sunday. We will know soon enough whether he is Tarzan or whether he is Jane?

I loved the Green pick. If he is the guy, our Oline is suddenly gonna be something to reckon with.
Now I just cross my fingers FO did ALL the homework on Stingley and Metchie - I can't imagine they didn't.
Yep, I give this draft a B-, with a chance at an A if Stingley and Metchie are healthy

Stingley - INC, possible A+ Possible F

Green- A, best player at his position in this draft. Give me that, I dont care about premium positions

Petrie- A, Love the player and the pick. He's better than Reid.

Metchie- Inc, See Stingley

Harris- B, I trust that Lovie knows who he wants at LB.

Pierce- B, Solid tough multi skilled RB with low mileage. Has a chance to be a really good pro.

Booker- B, solid rotational DT. There's value in this at this point in the draft.

Quitoriano- C, I really dont know much about him. But I do know they need a blocking TE in the worst way.

Deculus- C, big raw boned guy that has played alot of football. Hard nosed, limited athlete.

I give them a B-, for right now. They had a P5 bias which I think will bite them in the ass.

I don't hate Stingley bc of his injury. Julio Jones injured his in 2013 and had career years after that. Brian Westbrook injured his in 2005 and had two career years after that. It's random examples, but with Stingley essentially not playing hardly at all since 2019 he should be recovered. Catch-22, we drafted a guy who hadn't played since 2019 and suffered a major injury. Why not just draft Sauce? I'm not sure what else he could've put on tape that would've justified taking him there in Nick's eyes. And he shut down the draft's best receiver from the glorified SEC for 1 catch, -2 yards. What makes it worse is defensive mastermind Robert Saleh took him one pick later. However if we just drafted 2019 Stingley this is a home run. His dad is also a massive tool, Lavar Ball-esque, FWIW. A+/F (Depending on injury and productivity)

I like the Kenyon Green pick. Sure it was higher than where ppl thought he'd go but none of that matters if he turns out to be the best guard in the draft, which I think he can be. Being from Humble should also give him added incentive to want to be here, right? B

I really like Pitre, think he's basically Honey Badger, but will we be able to utilize him properly is the question, along with his long term position in the NFL, which I think is SS. B+

I really like Metchie, but he's a reach at where he was drafted. He was really productive at Bama, but not sure how much is going to translate to the pro's. B-

I also like Christian Harris but I'm now convinced after seeing so many outstanding Alabama LB's get drafted well into Day 3 or ultimately flaming out of the league all together that the football God's have put a hex on that position that simply cannot be broken. C+

Pierce I think could be a find. Low-mileage and hard-nosed runner. I like this pick, will he be a three-down starter? Maybe. Likely not. I see him as a Marlon Mack/Zack Moss type. I would've loved to see James Cook since we already have Mack in the building. We need juice offensively and Cook is a homerun threat. B-

The rest? I think Booker could maybe be a rotational pass rushing piece for a couple years. The other two? Well, I see why Nick didn't want to draft late.

Maybe the idea is…..those injured players would sign more team friendly deals with the Texans.

As an overall thought on this draft, Caserio did his job once again and I think the entire group in on the roster. I’ll give Caserio an “B+”. Let’s get these men on the field and put them through their paces.
The dollars are pretty much locked in by the rookie pool.

I don’t think it’s about the bounce back.

Right now it’s a gamble. There’s no reason to take those gambles. He could have picked Gardner. How much higher is Stingley’s upside?

If you don’t like Gardner (he’s too handsy) that’s one thing.

Metchie, at least 3 comparable talents on the board when he traded up to make that pick.

No reason you can’t grade him on those choices as is.

Smartest guy in the room? Does he know something no one else does?

Did he read the situation right? Same thing with Green? I think he’d have been there at 20. If not, Cole Strange will be.

He got his guy, that’s a good thing. Did he play his hand as well as he could? That’s the question.

To me it's about getting the guys you want, not trying to play the what if game. Looks to me if healthy Caserio added 6 starters from this draft. I'm happy with this draft.

My grade is a little different. I love that he wasn’t satisfied with just choosing what’s left. That’s an awkward way to build a team, that’s rolling the dice to me.

Self scout, identify your needs. Identify your limitations. Plan your work, work your plan.

I think Nick did that part well.

I also think he made some unnecessary moves, being more aggressive than he needed. But, I’m watching from home, he’s in the middle of it. So what do I know?

Next year I expect the same mobility, but hopefully more traditional selections, where it doesn’t look like he’s gambling on every other pick.

Keep it Movin!
The only pick I didn't like was Metchie. I can live with the others. My bias is this team is bad enough that they should have at least 10 rookies playing and contributing early and often. Keep the draft picks and just draft the highest rated player at that position regardless of position. I didn't think they should or needed to give up any draft capital to move up for any player in this draft. There was a like talent every position the Texans moved from.

Grade: B-
The Patriots loved Strange enough to jump on him in the first round but they could have likely gotten him in the third round. He is their ideal type of interior blocking prospect with his versatility tied to balanced strength and agility and fills a considerable need with Ted Karras and Shaq Mason no longer on the roster.

Couldn't help but say "say what ! ?" when the author gave the Pats a B- on their first round pick when he says the Pats could have waited until the third round to get their first round pick.

One thing I know about our fanbase is we’re going to find something to grip and complain about. I didn’t like the Stingley pick because we we should’ve drafted Thibodeaux or Gardner. They wanted Stingley, therefore I’m going to pull for him and hope Caserio made the right decision. I do know the young man is darn good when healthy. Just like Metchie, he’s darn good, very precise in his route running and has the potential to be a # 1 WR.

It’s not part of the “draft” grade but by signing Rashad Green does that add a curve to this draft? im still waiting to get the final grade on last year’s draft.

There’s a lot to like here. I completely understand taking a swing on Stingley at No. 3. He has elite cover skills and plays a premium position. There’s real upside there. The Texans traded back before taking Green. That pick felt like a bit of a reach, but Green is young (will play his rookie season at 21 years old) and versatile (made starts at four different positions in college).

Trading up for Metchie seemed too aggressive. The Texans gave up the equivalent of the 56th overall pick in that deal, according to one trade chart. Metchie is a fine prospect, but the Texans have holes all over their roster and didn’t need to give up two additional fourth-round picks to land him.

Pitre is a really fun player. Harris has upside to develop into a plus starter. And Pierce runs with violence. Overall, the Texans made nine picks. For the most part, I like what they did (I know, I’m as surprised as you are).

I never said he did not play a game after 2019. I said he hasn't played in a game since 2019 where his performance was worthy of being the 3rd pick in the NFL draft. True statement.

So IMH opinion I'll give the efforts of our GM & HC a solid B.

Now add Green and Booker to the D line….

And I wanted to fix the O with the majority of this draft and I think they took steps to doing that too.
They're an rg and a TE away from having a very talented offense. Can't fix everything in 1 year.

I'm really hoping Caserio drafts the Notre Dame TE, Mayer next year. That guys a stud.

B-. I don't like giving up draft capital for players we could have had at the original position. I think Nick tends to over think things quite often (his handling of HC search was terrible - twice). I like the top 6 players we drafted, just not the position we drafted them. The last 3 picks are questionable.
We didn't address our greatest need. Where is the edge pass rusher? This was a deep draft at edge and we didn't take any.

Disagree, it's about getting players and he added 6 guys that could be starters next year doing things his way. There's no way to know if he could have gotten those guys if he had sat still or traded down. RS drafted the way you wanted Caserio to draft and he missed out on guys like Mahomes/Lockett/Jimmy G etc... I'm so glad we've got a GM that knows who he wants on his team and is willing to do what it takes to get his guys.

I don't really know much about Teagen and Deculus is just a guy, so I would have rathered those picks be spent on another RB like Teague. But if that's all I have to gripe about then Caserio did a good job.

I think he signed two edge guys but did not announce, so have to factor that into the draft. So many holes, his logic was at least sound, we can all debate other ways to go about it, but having his edge in his pocket but keeping quiet was shrewd. He is a lot better with personnel than head coaching hunts, so we agree there
