The USFL is coming back!

Thanks for the heads up. Was working on my medical and somehow accidentally pasted that URL in the USFL article. Have corrected it.:tiphat:
I worked once with a psychiatrist who posted a love note to one of the social workers. Unfortunately it was in a patient's chart. Didn't believe it until I saw it. Created a lot of Gossip around the old hospital. They did end up getting married after his quickie divorce.

You know….the USFL put together some great looking uniforms. I’ll be buying some Gamblers gear the moment the league upgrades the selection and offers authentic game day jerseys.

It’s unfortunate that 4 of the 8 teams have red in their uniforms. Overall….the Generals may have the coolest uniform in my eyes.

umm, I still got the medical
Even though I deleted the med link and substituted the right link yesterday and today, it evidently wouldn't delete. So this morning, I erased the entire post and started over again. I checked it and finally the correct link is assigned. :tiphat:

I like the Breakers and the Gamblers best. The Gamblers helmet is the coolest Houston football helmet ever.

I don't mind so many early teams with red. If the league expands we will most likely see more teams without red to balance things out.

Red as a color of many teams is not in and of itself a bad thing if the red is a secondary color but so many teams in a small league with red as their dominant color does stick out like a sore thumb.

I like the Gamblers look, I just wish that they had a red stripe on top of their helmets. It would make them look even better imo.

So if you're the #1 overall pick in the USFL, wouldn't you be good enough to be (I don't know), maybe a 5th round pick in the NFL? :)

Gambling again playing more and more a role in football.............but it certainly is to boost NFL revenues.............but of course, it in no way can it affect the integrity of the games............

USFL’s 2022 contracts will make it harder for XFL to get players in 2023
February 24, 2022, 8:39 PM EST

The XFL will return in 2023. The USFL knows that, and is planning shrewdly for the competition.
Via Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, the USFL’s player contracts cover one year, with a one-year option. Thus, the USFL can choose to squat on any, some, or all of the players for 2023, keeping them away from the XFL (owned by The Rock) for its third inaugural season.

While the USFL may win the short-term fight for players, the XFL’s collaboration with the NFL may help that league win the broader struggle for relevance.
It’s possibly not a zero-sum game, however. With legalized gambling continuing to spread, people need things to bet on. (Or “on which to bet,” for the grammatically fastidious.) Maybe there’s room for two alternative spring leagues.
Still, as we’ve said before — and as mentioned in Playmakers (I think . . . regardless, buy it now, people) — why have an alternative league in the spring when Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the fall are, to borrow a phrase from Bruce Arians, wide-ass open?

Hovering over all of this is the NFL. It hasn’t re-launched a developmental league post-NFL Europa because the model hasn’t been profitable. Gambling could make it extremely profitable. And if anyone is going to be profiting from pro football at any time of the year, it’s going to be the NFL.

I was wondering all along why this hadn't happened quite a while ago.

Original USFL sues Fox over USFL reboot
February 28, 2022, 7:47 PM EST

The USFL will return in April. Unless it doesn’t.

The owners and executives of the original USFL have sued to block Fox from launching a league that uses the brand and team names of the spring league that was founded in 1983.

In a complaint filed Monday in a California federal court, an entity known as “The Real USFL, LLC” seeks an order preventing Fox from using the USFL name and the names and logos of any of the 18 teams that played in the original USFL.

The plaintiff alleges that Fox’s USFL “is an unabashed counterfeit,” and that Fox has taken the league’s name, eight team names, and eight team logos “to which it has no right.”
“It has traded on the false narrative that Fox’s League and USFL teams are the offspring of the original,” the complaint contends at paragraph 4. “They are not.”

The original USFL raised its concerns publicly last year, after Fox announced plans to bring back the USFL.

Negotiations occurred, but Fox allegedly made it clear that it “had no intention of discussing the matter further.”

Eventually, Fox claimed that the USFL had been defunct for more than 30 years, and that it had abandoned its trademarks.

The lawsuit includes claims for trademark infringement, false advertising, and false association. Ultimately, the case boils down to whether the original USFL retained the rights to the league name and the team names and logos. If the legal system concludes that it does, Fox has a very real problem.

“Fox could have easily started its own league with new teams, but instead chose to take the goodwill and nostalgia of the original league without the permission of the people who actually created it,” attorney Alex Brown said in a press release. “Fox can’t dispute that the ‘Real USFL’ marks are recognizable and valued because they’re using them and purposefully confusing its league with the original. Rather than do the right thing, Fox has chosen to try and bully the prior owners into submission. That’s not going to happen.”

What’s likely going to happen is that the original USFL will try to get a preliminary injunction preventing the league from launching in April with the original USFL league and team names and logos.

So let me guess how this is gonna go. The USFL will get caught up in legal proceedings and the league won't play this year. By next spring the soon to be reconstituted XFL will already be broke and then whatever is left of the USFL won't show up next year either.

You have to wonder how many times people will keep trying this. Personally I'm glad they do, I like the idea of spring football. It just seems that for various reasons they all fail.

That doesn’t fix the issue of team names and logos.

Supposedly starting next month, no time to change to the Houston Ramblers.

Pretty dumb move by Fox if this is a year in the making and they still went ahead with it.

All the Original USFL, LLC would need to produce are their trademark filings and continuation paperwork after their final season in 1985. If they didn’t maintain their trademarks over the 27 years since they shut the doors…..they won’t have a case.

I wonder how many of the original owners are still around and would push for lawsuit like this?

Why not place a symbol by the team names? Tampa Bay Bandits* New Jersey Generals* etc..etc... Either that or use the current names in Spanish. Ex..Houston El Jugadores

It is an unabashed counterfeit. Can't believe they didn't make a deal with the original league.

This article is worth reading in its entirety.

USFL: What You Need to Know About the New Professional Football League

This is not the first edition of the USFL

The original USFL lasted three seasons (1983-85), and it did not lack for talent. Three consecutive Heisman Trophy winners signed with the league directly out of college — Herschel Walker, Mike Rozier, and Doug Flutie. In addition, several future Pro Football Hall of Famers got their starts in the USFL, including Reggie White, Steve Young, and Jim Kelly. Hall of Fame coaches Marv Levy and George Allen are part of the league's history, as is executive Bill Polian.

While the league shares its name, there is no legal connection between the original and this new entity. The new USFL has acquired most of the original league's trademarks, so the team names will look very familiar to those who remember it.

The Real USFL LLC, the league’s former team owners’ holding company, said it still licenses USFL trademarks for use on clothing, films, and books. According to the lawsuit, Fox Sports purchased its USFL trademark rights from a company unrelated to the original league.
It's interesting to also follow the 2 links below.

**********************************************************

In a statement on Monday, the original league’s attorney, Nicholas Matich of McKool Smith, said, “Fox is trying to reap where it did not sow and profit from confusion among fans of the real USFL, by claiming the legacy of something it didn’t build.”

Meanwhile, David Bernstein of Debevoise & Plimpton, counsel to Fox Sports, said: “The lawsuit filed yesterday by an entity formed just a week ago is completely without merit. The new USFL registered its intellectual property rights in 2011 and is excited to launch games on schedule on April 16. The eleventh-hour attempt to extract value from the exciting new USFL is utterly frivolous, and we are exploring all options for redress.”

Are you surprised there aren't any McDonald's* or Budweisers out there?
I was merely speculating. I didn't think it through before I brought that up. That has already been brought up to me by someone else. I am now sure if that was a way it would have been done already.

As of now it appears the new USFL unknowingly acquired the league and teams fraudulently. Looks like the new USFL is fixing to fold before it ever gets started. Either that or they will have to pay up the keister to survive as they currently are.

Nobody is saying this league is like the NFL or even remotely as good as the original USFL. The play should be entertaining none the less given that from top to bottom the talent should be comparative.

With a slow growth approach the talent could be much better within the next five seasons, if the league could somehow last that long and is looking to last longer.

How so?

Never said it was. I'm well aware of the talent level. Somebody has Jordan Ta'amu rated #1, for example.

The play will be what it is. Lesser talent playing NFL preseason type football. Should be entertaining? Eh. The Roughnecks were fun because they were 5-0. If they're 2-3, 1-4, probably not as much buzz. In fact, the USFL, at least for this season, will probably carry even less buzz because all the games are in Birmingham. No chance to go out on a nice spring day in Houston and catch a game in person at TDECU or whatever. Who knows if it will be around next year?

I get that people don't like the New USFL playing in a hub but I think it is a smart way to start. I hardly see why people can't just enjoy it as a made for TV league for the first season or two. If people will get behind the league early I am sure that the league will become more conventional in a short time frame. Where they play their games for a season or two shouldn't be the reason the league fails. Terrible football for a long time should be the only reason the league should fail not where they choose to play games in the short term.

All the talent is comparative in regards to all the players being practice squad level or at most third string NFL level talent. It won't be a league with some players of first or even second string NFL talent taking on much lesser level talent. If the leagues talent was not comparative you would see a lot of the players overmatched. Not to say that players being overmatched in the New USFL won't take place but as it stands now it is more than likely there will not be a serious competitive imbalance. Then again some of the talent may progress to NFL worthy mainstays in a relatively short period of time.

Hell, just change the name to the USAFL, and the team names to something like the Tampa Bay Banditos, Houston Gambits, Pittsburgh Malingerers , New Jersey Generators, etc....lol
They could just as easily use the Spanish translations for most of the teams names.
