David Culley Fired After One Season!

Culley turned out to be exactly what we thought he would be before he was hired. This is more of a reflection on the File Clerk's decision making than anything else. If you tell me he was a bridge coach, what in the hell is a bridge coach other than a very bad excuse?
He's the guy that fills the position because the guy you really want is unavailable. When the guy you want becomes available you make the change.

I'm not buying the Culley not wanting to change offensive personnel angle. Starting a rumor like this and leaking it seems like something this organization would do.
I thought he made that statement in a press conference

Culley & Kelly were here to try to appease Watson. Watson is out... so Culley & Kelly are out.
I believe I mentioned this outcome quite a while back. I figured McDaniels would be the target but I didn’t plan on the Dolphins canning Flores. Flores may be the better hire since he and Caserio should be able to convince Pep Hamilton to stay on as the new OC. Who knows, McDaniels may very well be willing to do the same thing if given the option. Overall…..I think the Texans gig will be much better than the Bears gig in the long run.

Culley did not hire any of the staff and never had any say in any operations or personnel. This "wouldn't change" stuff is just cover by the marketing machine. He never had the power to change and if Caserio wanted other assistants, Culley would have parroted it accordingly.

Clown show on Kirby. This is how dysfunction looks. But go ahead and get the Patriot obsession out of their system. They won't stop until it runs its course.

What an incomprehensible decision. Absolutely terrible.

Is the next guy coming in going to come to a team that is close to being a powerhouse team? No. So why the **** are you getting rid of the guy who had the team at least mostly competitive and had a rookie qb looking decent despite having NOTHING?!
and he got paid to say nothing. I call that all square.

I can’t believe that Culley wasn’t told exactly what those above him expected of him in terms of coaching changes.

Seems like the Texans set him up by letting him make those statements. At the very least he shouldn’t have been in front of the media planning for the future while the decision was still up in the air.

But hey, he’s been wronged but walks away with 2 years pay for 1 years work, he’s been an NFL head coach which was his dream, and he is close to retirement.

He also hasn’t done a particularly great job last year so this isn’t a bad decision, just badly executed (and the decision to hire him was awful!)

I hope they have an offensive HC in mind, I’m intrigued by Lovie’s D, can see how that develops, and I doubt we move on from the EP while Caserio/Easterby are around, so can’t see it effecting Mills’ development too badly.

Many a folks on this board didn’t want to believe Culley was hired and Kelly was kept in every effort to get Watson to stay with the team. When it became apparent that didn’t even make Watson twitch, there was still hope that his mind could be changed until the legal shite hit the fan. The Texans and Caserio were aware of the writing on the wall…..and I’m guessing Culley and Kelly knew their days were numbered as well.

I’m sure there will be a lot more known come Sunday or Monday…..unless the Patriots push it out for another week. I’m also pretty confident that Flores and McDaniels are the targets. The key for either signing may be their willingness to keep Pep Hamilton on board as their OC/QB Coach.

yep. I'm going to laugh if they hire Flores in a misguided attempt to get Watson to come back. lol :heh:

I get dumpster fires. I don't get how the one parked on Kirby just keeps on burning. At some point everything burns to a crisp and it dies out, right?
It keeps burning because they keep feeding it bullshit. lol :firehair:

wrong what sealed his fate is that he took the job in the 1st place. The deck was stacked against him from day 1.
That could be true to but when he wouldn’t bow down to Caserio about the starting quarterback the icing was applied.

And the deck will be stacked for whoever they bring in.

Oh Watson will never be back in a Texans uniform. At this point, Caserio is probably getting a feel for Watson’s current market and what his potential return could be, if there’s any chance his situation becomes clearer before the draft.

Culley's fate was sealed from day 1. He should have a nice enough retirement stash now. For a position coach he did OK for himself.
see that’s the thing, people focus on the money, but that dudes been in the nfl coaching & waiting on his opportunity for a minute. So I’m sure his retirement was already set & he was good on that end. The guy most likely was only still coaching in hoping to just get an opportunity to be a HC.

so on the 1 hand he had to know that the situation he was coming into was a **** situation…& he’s culpable for accepting it knowing the most likely outcome was this…..but on the other it was “if not now when…if ever?” For him.

At the end of the day for me, I just dont really think you can consider his brief tenure here as a real shot at the gig which is unfortunate.

Think it’s pretty clear that whomever they bring in is going to have to be someone who is familiar with how the Pats do things and won’t have a problem with NC having all of the major say-so.

Which in essence makes the choice Flores, McDaniels, Daboll or some other former Patriot assistant. Odds on favorite that it’s Flores tho…mostly b/c he’s already available.

Now ask you, what say you when the File Clerk hires a HC he could've hired last year?

Agree.
Who wants to come to an organization with such a happy trigger finger?
Culley was uninspiring, but he had a bad situation to begin with.
At least TK will be gone too.

If Flores is the target, why did they let Culley do the presser, and twist in the wind like that? What a bunch of doosh nozzles! Flores was fired on Monday morning wasn't he?
It took a while for all four chairs in the Kirby Boardroom to assemble. Irony here is Flores is interested in Chicago and New York Giants and McDaniels is not interested. It's FUBARAMA!!!!

The obvious hilarity/irony of all this .....

"WTF are they doing, its been 6 years, FIRE HIS ASS!!"

"WTF are they doing, didn't give the guy a real chance!"

Ah the joys of the McNair ownership!

You state this in a matter of fact way like this is standard operating procedure for NFL teams to hire and fire placeholder coaches while a GM waits for his guy. When in NFL history has a team operated in this fashion?

Rumor has it that they offered to guarantee a 3rd year on his contract and he declined that option when he found out the alternative was to fire him...

Let's get a petition going. Bring back the Man in Black.
One thing I know is that Sam Wyche flat out hated Jerry Glanville. Remember in 1989 when the Bengals beat the Oilers 61-7. He even called time out with something like 20 seconds left in the game when he was up 58-7 so they could kick a final field goal.

I saw Boomer Esiason say that the players would intentionally get Wyche to fly into a rage just by mentioning Glanville's name.

Do you think Culley was hired to be the long term coaching solution for the Texans? I think not. From day one I think it was near unanimous that Culley was a placeholder. If the coach the organization wants as their "franchise" coach comes available, of course the placeholder coach is going to be fired. I seriously doubt that "the plan" was to replace Culley after only one year. But you have to play the cards as they are delt.

The Texans could have hired Josh McDaniels last year (I believe this is correct) but they didn't.

Flores had just completed the second year of his contract as a head coach, so was unavailable. If Flores was the guy Caserio wanted, then the team had to hire a placeholder coach and wait out Flores' contract. His firing caught everyone by surprise, and with as many as six teams looking for a new HC, there is a lot of interest in Flores.

The Texans had to play the cards as they were delt.

So the question is, is Flores the man they want?
