Rebuilding this team

Or maybe its the idea of a team built to win in 2019 or 2020 now in cap hell with no draft assets and a QB (&LT) who's contract doesn't appear to fit the new window of opportunity.

Think about it , this team just went 4-12 with Watson putting up very good statistics and they are very limited in their ability to add talent to the team for next season when he only counts $15.94m against the cap and the following year he accounts for $40.4m in cap space.

The prospects for improving the team around him in the next two seasons are grim.
It's going to take a year or two to clear the books of the toxic contracts - Mercilus , Martin , Cunningham , McKinney , David Johnson , Cobb , Eric Murray and under performing players and time to accumulate draft picks to put any talent around Watson.

They'll have to dump another $24.46m in salary after next season just to accommodate his cap hit for 22 ... that after having to dump some ~$40m just to fill out the roster for 2021.

Really this has nothing to do with Watson and everything to do with the franchise not having any financial vision beyond 2019 & 2020. Even without the Covid economic issues they'd be in cap hell.

Where's the window to contend with Watson and where's that window to contend without him ?

Great post, there's no window to compete with DW4. There might be a window in 3 or 4 yrs if they trade DW4 for a kings ransom and clear the books of all of the terrible contracts. Unfortunately if this was to happen the Texans would be really bad next yr. Do you think Cal will let a 1st yr GM totally clean house next yr with the idea that a rebuild truly starts in 2022? I dont, but it should happen even if they suck next yr. After all they sucked this yr with DW4 supposed great play. You cant get worse than 4-12. Time to start over.

They will suck the next 2 yrs due to lack of talent. Then they will suck for another 3-4 yrs due to cap issues. We're in the middle of the lost decade.
Man please stop I am trying hard to not feel like a jets fan. Im not one of these wusses that says I’m going to root for another team but it’s just hard to believe things are this bleak.

It is what it is.

With no cap space and no high draft picks for the Texans the Jets are in a position to become better than the Texans in the next 3-4 years.

If Caserio can somehow swing some trades for high picks and dump the bad contracts the maybe we can accelerate the timeline. 2024 they look to have a decent amount of capspace, assuming they don't add a bunch of contracts

We have a long history of stupid with this team. I don't fault anyone for assuming the worst until this franchise proves otherwise.
On one hand, Bill O'Brien is promoted to GM after a historic playoff meltdown. But on the other hand, Call fired O'Brien four games into the season. On the one hand, the McNair's conduct thorough due diligence in their search for a new GM by hiring a consulting firm as well as consulting former coaches, players and even their star quarterback. On the other hand, that looked to be a complete sham.

Here's where I stand - I hope they hired the right guy. I hope that guy hires the right head coach. That's it. It's all just a bunch of hope. It may all work out brilliantly, or this team may continue to go down the drain. Because to be honest; I don't really know how the McNair's measure success for this franchise. Or how they view their employees. It doesn't seem very highly, at least that's how I view the optics coming out from ownership. Cal appeared completely tone deaf the other day, cracking dumb jokes while reports swirled around the league that the face of his franchise has lost faith in the process. But he'll call Deshaun and get him back in line.

Maybe I just need a new pair of glasses.

I haven't seen anything with cal recently. Dude doesn't really instill a "run to war" sense of leadership for me.

Depends on how you think DW4's act is going to play out in Cal's mind. Cal asked for DW4's thoughts on the GM/HC hires and decided to go in a different direction. It's obvious to me that DW4 needs to grow up and Cal doesn't seem to care about what DW4 wants. DW4's upset because he knows that Caserio and maybe Easterby thoughts carry more weight than DW4's thoughts. When DW4 realized this he threw a fit just like any petulant child would and wants to be traded. If he doesn't want to be here and you get a deal you like then Caserio should trade DW4. Same goes with the Rockets and Harden.

Im ok with things that provoke conversation. This is a mb.

Still. Huh?
There is plenty to discuss without him attacking our franchise qb constantly. His dislike for Watson clouds his judgement on everything with this team. It's out of control.

Threw a fit?
To this point literally all we've heard directly from DW is "some things never change".
Every other thing that's been said is through "sources".

I consider asking for a trade to be throwing a fit. Maybe you dont and that's ok.

Cal asked for DW4's thoughts on hiring a GM/HC, took those thoughts under advisement and hired who he wanted to hire instead of who DW4 wanted him to hire and now DW4's rumored to want to be traded because DW4 didn't get his way. What would you call DW4's behavior?

This is probably the 1st time in DW4's athletic career that he hasn't gotten what he's wanted.

This is nothing more than BS speculation on your part

This isn't speculation, Cal's talked to DW4 about who he wanted to be GM/HC and Cal hired a different GM and is going to hire a HC of the GM's choosing instead of DW4's choosing.

You didn't answer what you would call DW4's behavior?

That is pure speculation. You have no clue if Watson named a GM at all or who it may have been if he did

DW4 was on the committee.

You dont think DW4 voiced who he wanted to be the next GM/HC?

I do think there is a window to win with Watson .... but there are steps that absolutely must be taken to create that window. If you don't take those steps , it doesn't matter who the QB is , there is no window.

Watt , Mercilus , McKinney , Martin , Both Johnson's , Cobb & Eric Murray .... Those guys aren't eating up a majority of cap space on a contending team. They gotta go. $87.175m right there.

GM? No I doubt it. Do you? And who it may have been?

If he was on the search committee then I'm guessing that he had an idea of who Cal was looking at for the GM/HC jobs. Atleast he should've known Caserio was Cal's #1 choice for GM since Cal was willing to risk tampering charges last yr.

From what I've been told , the original "search committee (Pancakes , Watson , Cal , Easterby)" - before Porn Fairy - had settled on Bieniemy , the job was his if he wanted it. He flat out turned them down.

They'd have hired him before they hired a GM. The GM spot would have had to have fallen in line with their direction , we may have dodged a bullet here.

You didn't answer the question, and separate the GM and HC

edit: Why would Watson be upset about a GM hire he knew they were going to make?

Why do you think he asked for a trade?

I don't think he asked for a trade and that's my point.
I think there are "reports" that he mentioned a trade to someone somewhere.
I've yet to see anything directly from the man either stating interest in a trade, or actually requesting one.

Maybe I've just missed it feel free to point me to any such direct quotes and I'll be glad to reassess at that point

PFT (Florio) said DW4 put out feelers seeking a trade.

Definitely not true. Jets & Dolphins both have lots of cap space and can offer a better 2021 roster to surround him coming out of off season than Houston can.
True..Most teams have done better than the Texans with cap space etc..

I'm really ok to see what a new GM and coach will do with what they can work with. I like Watson and want to see what he can do with the right cast..

i wanna know does watson wanna be here long term like in 4 years ..??? buts that another story

i do think unless the jags want him we should keep him in texans
