Watson Extension

I didn't see any comments anywhere about Watson getting a contract extension, so here's a shiny new thread for y'all to cuss and discuss it.

Turned on the tube this morning and first thing we start with is a presser with Watson being noticably emotional, and even crying and my wife says why is he crying ? So I said honey you'd be crying too if you'd just signed a multi year contract for that kind of money.
So the Texans certainly took care of business this summer: Tunsil, Cunningham and now Watson.

Reminds me of when Arian Foster got his big extension. Both were, at their roots, success stories and tributes of what it means for a young black man to overcome their environment and some serious obstacles. It’s something everyone can celebrate, especially these days when we’re trying to break free of the disparity between the social classes.

I’m extremely happy for Watson.

I almost cried watching that presser. So happy for Watson and Texan fans.

This was the most I've ever heard from Easterby at one time. My impression is that at heart, he's a cheerleader and preacher. Maybe a motivational speaker with a captive audience. I don't see how this guy has vaulted into being an essential voice in how this organization is built. At some point, this is going to become a problem. If it already hasn't become one.

Why aren't there more (any) women in decision making positions in the NFL? Because they don't have football experience? Easterby has to give these women seeking entry in to the upper echelons of the NFL organizations great hope.

Easterby doesn't have to do squat. I would love to know how your opinion on women in sports isn't political but my opinion on women in sports is political?

Report: Deshaun Watson’s contract includes no-trade clause

Here's a lil nugget from the article:
Watson’s agent, David Mulugheta of Athletes First, negotiated the deal with Texans executive vice president of football operations Jack Easterby and Texans director of football administration Kevin Krajcovic.

Who cares what gender it is when it comes to filling a position in any workplace? What matters is one’s qualifications! If said women are more qualified than men, by all means, hire them. But hiring a woman for the sake of “making history” in being the first woman in power is pretty god dang ignorant and stupid. Not saying you’re suggesting it, just my personal opinion.

What matters is that the opportunity is equal. Easterby got his job as VP of Football Operations after several years as a "character coach". Not where a job like that usually comes from. Not even an analytics guy, like a Morey or Luhnow.
Yeah, I’m with you on that one. Not sure how being a preacher translates into VP of Football Operations, but he has got the title. Maybe there’s more to him than the Patriots led everyone to believe. I’m sure the Texans would hire Peyton Manning if he were to apply for the “Team Chaplain” position.

Maybe he played QB in HS and worked his way up the ladder.

What matters is hiring the person that has the greatest chance to be successful. Having played the game should give a guy like Easterby a leg up over people who have never played the game. Plus obviously Easterby worked his way up from the bottom.

Easterby played golf and basketball in college. May as well have played softball and lacrosse.

Besides, he creeps me out. I don't know if he wants me to join his cult, or buy a timeshare. '

People who have deep seeded religous views probably do creep you out. McNair's obviously happy with the job he's been doing and that's all that really matters.

Great for Watson ...

Probably not so great for the team if its an average of $39m per.

Between Watson and Tunsil they'll have 61m per year tied up in two players. That's ~37% of the estimated 2021 cap.

Absolutely nuts.

$195,246,809. in active contracts for 2021 Before the Watson extension.

Cap is expected to be between 165m & 175m.

They'll be 20-30m over the cap before Watson's extension is factored in starting next season.

Haven't seen the breakdown of this contract yet but they are already in cap hell , this just makes it worse - Way Worse.

pretty much. Too many fans have Champagne and caviar dreams but wanna pay koolaid and tuna fish prices when it comes to paying these players. You’re gonna pay a premium if the player is worth a damn....period.

Yep, they are doomed to mediocrity for the next 3-4 yrs depending on how long the guaranteed money is spread out.

I happen to agree with Seegara. Look at the last 5 games as a template. Hopefully the new additions on offense can help change the way teams are defending DW4 and we will be wrong.

Tell me again what is the highest percentage of cap a QB has ever taken up and won a SB?

So...you wanna short change this man based on his last 5 games Nevermind the other 2 years as 1 of the brightest stars at the position with little to no support around him huh?

Ok, lets look at his last 5 games:

1354 passing yards, 10 Total TDs, 5 ints......1 game winning drive....no TO's in the playoffs.....3-2 record overall....likely would've looked even better had he played in that last Titans game.

Young fella deserves everything he got based on what he's done to date here despite what he's had to endure. & he's only getting better. A few years from now, that 39 million could very well look like a bargain.

What's your point

Mine is there will be no SB's with the cap percentages. History has proven this out and you can deny this all you want too. But it is what it is.

To make matters worse the cap is likely to be much lower in this 4 yr period due to the NFL's stance on Antifa/BLM and the Covid-19 situations. Unfortunately this makes this contract even worse and the franchise won't be winning any SB's during this 4 yr period. This is the case even if DW4 exceeds expectations. There simply isn't enough cap room to build a championship level team.

What exactly has he done to deserve this kind of deal?

So you think the cap is going to continue to go up? I think you're going to be in for a ride awakening.

But hey, DW4 got his and good for him. Just don't expect any championship's during the next 4 yrs and you won't be disappointed.

Lamar Jackson will have leaped Watson, by then.

That means Baltimore, Kansas City, and Houston will have no shot at the Super Bowl.

Because their QBs are too good. :troll:
Mahomes left money on the table over the next 4 yrs so this is an untrue statement. Let me know what the cap is going to look like in 3 yrs and I can comment on LJ. I think the contracts that are going to be written then are going to surprise many fans and QB'S will likely be getting a percentage of the cap rather than. straight up money.

Anything added would indeed make it worse but his cap number for 2021 is about $16M which isn't bad for a starting QB. Now 2022 and 2023 his avg number is $41M...It looks to be flexibility in there in case Watson just completely bombs out starting in 2023. If the link below is true.

Mahomes and Watson each make over the magical 15% of the cap in 2 of the next 6 seasons. Mahomes has a larger cap hit in 4 of those 6 seasons.

I could provide the links. But, I think you should do your own research before you spout a bunch of crap.
So Mahomes is takyup 15 percent of the cap thiyyr and they were able to bring everybody back?

I've read Mahomes deal is very cap friendly for the next 3 years. In fact some have been critical for Mahomes doing a deal that is structured the way it is.

Again with less than 20 QB's to judge by, you don't know if this will continue. You're just spouting what another poster contends

20 yrs is a small sample size?

I started a thread asking posters what they think the cap will look like in 2023 and would love to see your response so in 2023 we can go back and revisit this topic.

Just because fans are happy DW4 got paid doesn't mean it was the right thing to do. Time will tell.

Considering that Brady won 6 of them his-self, yes it is

NFL salaries and QB salaries in particular have done nothing but go up since the introduction of FA in 96...so yes, it is somewhat reasonable to assume that the cap is only going to continue to go up. COVID is a 1 off type situation and the NFL salary cap isn’t the stock market where there will be a correction of some sort. Once we FINALLY get this **** under control, the upward trajectory of salaries will resume.

Maybe, maybe not.

A good number of fans have found that they can do other things with their time other than watching sports during these Covid-19 times we live in. People have changed how they live and their TV watching habit. See: NBA viewership as an example.

These are unprecedented times we're living in and I wouldn't be willing to bet 160 mil on everything being back to normal in 3 years.

His 2021 cap hit was actually reduced from $17.5m to $15.94,

The 2022 cap hit is $40.4m

That is a little over 20% (1/5th) of the current cap which isn't affected by Covid and economic shutdown issues.

Tunsil's 2022 cap hit is $21.1m

That's 10% of the current , non covid affected cap.

The projections for 2021 and 2022 are significant contractions in the cap estimates being $165m. At that figure the Texans will have 37.27% of their total cap space tied up in Watson and Tunsil. Even if the cap is ~10m or even 20m higher , that's still a significant portion of cap space allocated to just two contracts - even if they are very important (and very good) positions.

Doesn't matter Brian. It's the current cost of doing business.

On a serious note, when you look at the top ten QB salaries, you could pose that question to the majority of them.
  • 1. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: $45 million
  • 2. Texans QB Deshaun Watson: $39 million
  • 2. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson: $35 million
  • 3. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger: $34 million
  • 4.Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: $33.5 million
  • 4. Rams QB Jared Goff: $33.5 million
  • 6. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins: $33 million
  • 7. Eagles QB Carson Wentz: $32 million
  • 8. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: $$30.1 million
  • 9. Falcons QB Matt Ryan: $30 million
  • 10. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill: $29.5 million

Interesting to look at these deals in their most effective sense as number of years remaining while locked into the player cap-wise at the avg annual cap number of dollars per those 'locked' years (I used less than $10M in dead cap money as the cutoff simply because there had to be a cutoff and it's reasonable given these contracts)..

So basically, what they cost per year while we're stuck with 'em..

Patrick Mahomes - 4 yrs/$26.013M per
Deshaun Watson - 4 yrs/$27.137M per
Russell Wilson - 4 yrs/$34.75M per
Ben Roethlisberger - 2 yrs/$32.5M per
Aaron Rodgers - 3 yrs/$32.615M per
Jared Goff - 3 yrs/$31.922M per
Kirk Cousins - 3 yrs/$32.333M per
Carson Wentz - 4 yrs/$30.219M per
Dak Prescott - 1 yr/$31.409M
Matt Ryan - 3 yrs/$33.845M per
Ryan Tannehill - 3 yrs/$28.667 per

others of note..

Matt Stafford - 2yrs/$27.15M per
Philip Rivers - 1 yr/$25M
Drew Brees - 2 yrs/$29.9M per (includes $11.5M in dead cap money upon end of contract toward future years)
Teddy Bridgewater - 2yrs/$18.5M per
Derek Carr - 1 yr/$21.5M (doable for up to two more seasons at annual avg of $21.167M)
Tom Brady - 2 yrs/$25M per

So.. who do you want (besides Mahomes)..?

it is interesting to me if necessary and Watson year isn't what many expect he can be traded in the offseason 2021 with only $21 million dead money. I'm hoping Deshaun and others have another step up and most if not all of us are happy. That is a huge amount but could get us out of the contract if it is necessary.
Traded after June 1st 2021 dead is much smaller.

I would have preferred to see Watson improve his inconsistencies through this season, before being offered this mega deal. This didn't happen. So this is a time when Watson must finally prove his worth. It is also a time that Watson has to be evaluated on his merits alone..........as all upper echelon QBs are. Other teams and NFL evaluators will do this. Texans fans will have a difficult time of doing this. All NFL QBs share variables, including coaches and support personnel and opponents, that can effect their performance...........positively and negatively. The "elite" are paid to be consistent and overcome the swings. Watson is now being paid as an "elite" Texans franchise QB. We all all hoping that Watson is that man.
