Watson & Tunsil Contracts

Lots of rumors and junk flying around. I think it's just as likely that we re-sign these guys this year. What do you project or suggest in terms of a deal for Watson and Tunsil? I will post my breakdown later.

Don't these new contracts for each position kinda act like a pizzing contest ?
For example next QB to be signed on long-term deal will set a record, so then the deal following his elipeses that contract.
Given that scenario doesn't it behoove the Texans to sign Watson before the Chiefs sign MaHomes which will be a monster deal which would be very challenging for the Texans organization to top or match.

Mahomrs is already an MVP and SB champ. It’s a foregone conclusion he’s getting 40 per. DW4...as good as he is isn’t getting that..but he will get close...37-38 per. I think a lot of what happens depends on how next year goes. We do well, these guys are probably good to go to resign. We do bad, BoB will have to be fired for both to want to resign...or at least Tunsil anyway.

ballparking it though

DW4 = 4 years 148...70 or so guaranteed.... 37 per

Tunsil 4 years 78...48-50 guaranteed...19.5 per

With OB running the show, I won't be surprised if DW4 is the 1st player with a % of the salary cap as his annual average salary. Tunsil will be the highest paid LT in league history.
DW4- 5 years ~$200M with $140M guaranteed.
Tunsil 5 years $100M with $75 guaranteed.

If I'm Tunsil I want QB money.

If OB pays Tunsil his money and then Tunsil becomes a slacker at practice.........

Texans, Laremy Tunsil in active contract talks

Houston Chronicle March 30, 2020

The Texans and Pro Bowl left offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil have launched contract negotiations and exchanged intiial proposals, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly.

No deal is imminent or regarded as close, though, per sources.

The Texans' initial proposal averaged roughly $18.5 million per year, and Tunsil is countering with a significantly higher offer, per sources.

Tunsil is no longer represented by Creative Artists Agency and he doesn't plan to hire a formal agent at this time, according to NFL Players Association records.

This is something quite of few of us brought up. A few members didn’t want to hear that. One in particular was very adamant and confident when saying he would resign.
No one denied the situation. No one denied we're going to pay out the a55. It's going to get done & none of us are going to be happy about it, or we're going to trade Tunsil for a future 3rd, Julien Davenport, & still pay half of his new salary.

I’ll be happy with it if the Texans come out of this (choosing Tunsil over Hopkins-negotiations between Tunsil and Texans didn’t start to ramp up until after Hopkins was traded) with at least an AFC championship this season. That’s the only way O’Brien can redeem himself in the eyes of many Texans fans. And I sincerely believe if this doesn’t happen and O’Brien can’t get Tunsil signed to a long term contract he will be fired in 2021.

In a non bizzaro world scenario, he should have been fired after the Hopkins trade.

When word is out the texans didnt want to pay Hopkins because they have to pay watson and tunsil. The price goes up.....
That’s not what made the price go up. Hopkins being here or not Tunsil was always going to be the highest paid LT in history, he knew it, Texans knew it and anybody that has paid attention over the last 5 years knew it. This didn’t even start with the Texans this really kicked up when Raiders gave Trent Brown stupid, all pro money when his stats were middle of the pack at best.

Tunsil’s price was going to be through the roof no matter what happened. If he improves on the penalties then hard a pill as it is to swallow he will be worth it. Fact everyone here also forgets is that Tunsil will only stay the highest paid LT in history right up until the next stud LT’s contract needs to be renewed.

Bingo, the argument was NEVER about what his price would be, we all knew it would be high, some people were arguing about whether he would resign or not. Now that this story has come out some on here are trying to rewrite history that they were arguing he would be expensive. No, they were arguing he wouldn’t sign at all but again our money spends as good as anybody else’s and in fact if you are signing a big money contract you want to sign it in Texas.

The worry in the current climate is, how long until the richest OL contract in history becomes not enough, same with Watson.

Hopkins’ contract was record breaking on a couple of years ago, also.

Who switch up their argument like that? If you’re talking about me then you’re completely wrong. I said from the beginning that dude would want to be the highest paid Left tackle in the league. I also said they should’ve gotten this done when we traded for him. Why give two firsts rounds and not have this deal done. Makes no sense whatsoever. I also told Steel and JB that it’s a good chance he doesn’t resign with the Texans.

At this point I’m pretty sure you are purposely being ignorant because as has been pointed out many, many times if Tunsil or his agent say they are not signing a new deal yet then you can’t force them. But that of course doesn’t fit with the “Texans and OB made a bad trade” narrative so please continue to beat that drum and ignoring facts all the while saying others are ignoring facts.

Oh and by the way, you might want to go look at the trade Rams made for Ramsey. That deal was done by a guy that has been a GM with the same team since 12 and just signed to be with them through 23.

Yeah which was why as much as I hate the Hopkins trade and think it could have been handled MUCH better all the way around I can’t fault the Texans for not wanting to give him more money. You can just up a players pay every time someone else comes along and gets more money otherwise you would be making new contracts every year.

Mahomes is going to blow all other deals out of the water, then whatever next rookie QB that wins it all is going to blow that out of the water. Fact is this is not sustainable by teams. Pretty soon either all vets are going to get cut or traded away to bottom barrel teams with no other cap eaters. The days of where a team could have 3-5 stars are coming to an end. Pretty soon it will just be the QB and whatever a team can put around him.

Justin Reid, Cunningham, Scharping and Tytus Howard have three years or less on contracts and could ask for new contracts. Does Fuller in final year have leverage now he will be WR1 to demand extension?

I really don’t know where y’all get off calling people ignorant and sh$1. That crap is uncalled for period. Again show me where people are flip flopping. I’m pretty darn sure they thought about all the worse case scenarios. You bringing crap up like that because you’re trying to start some stuff. Yes Rico and quite a few other members do not like Bill O’Brien. And like I said if Tunsil bounce you can best believe the fire will spread even more.

Never said you were ignorant I said you were being ignorant and purposely at that. Also I never mentioned, in the post you quoted at least, flip flopping. The best part is you STILL haven't addressed the points made about not being able to force Tunsil or that a long time GM did basically the exact same deal with another player. Instead of playing the victim or trying to twist it around just address the points.

1. What do you do if a player that you desperately need says he's not signing a new deal right now?

2. If the deal was so bad and OB so dumb that no one else would do it then why did the GM of the Rams, who has been a GM for almost a decade and taken his team to the SB just the previous year, do the exact same deal with another franchise player?

Then...You....Don't....Make.....The....Trade!!!!
Almost all of BOB's misteps that are being defended around here don't take into account that he put us in the dilemma to start with. It takes two to tango regarding Tunsil's leverage forgets that they didn't extend him with the trade and if he wouldn't sign the extension at that time, you don't do the trade. DHop must not have been worth what we thought because they shopped him extensively forgets that no one forced the trade and we had all the leverage if he really was going to take the holdout path. We couldn't afford DHop because we have to pay Tunsil a record contract forgets that we gave Tunsil the leverage to get that contract because we didn't extend Tunsil with the trade. Clowney wasn't worth what we thought so we had to pay half his salary forgets that we held all the cards with the franchise tag and didn't have to trade him either. If you're able to forget how we keep getting into these situations where we get screwed, you can carry on as if maybe we aren't doing as poorly in building a team as it might seem.

It appears to be an organization constantly making unforced errors and just running in place to overcome them.

Have to disagree with you here. I know the draft picks were a lot but you still hope that after a year of solid play with the team that makes the playoffs going further than they ever had before that you can convince tunsil to remain with the team as you will pay him Pretty much what he's asking for.

with 39 million dollars in cap space when we traded Hopkins we could have given him ten more andTunsil 10 more to get them at 20 million each. it isn't that rhyme could not afford to keep DeAndre he chose not to.

Understood. I was referencing that this argument has been made on here several times -- not that I agree w/ it.

I have seen many articles on Watson not being happy about Hopkins leaving (nor am I). Then on social media, he is doing some odd things. First it was liking a tweet from Hoodie (I don't recall what the exact words were... something about new starts), then another similar post by Watson himself. Now, while I don't want to think it... could things like this really be small messages that he wants to leave? This is just a curiosity thing.

What's your opinion? And explain it.

Sad to say but I think Watson might want to leave. I made an option thread about it. I mean when Hoodie posts on social media about new starts and Watson likes it... Maybe he just loked the post or maybe it is a message
