Takeaways from the WC WIN!

Conley contributing positively has been such a positive development after hearing how terrible he supposedly was when the Texans first acquired him. He had 2 or 3 pass deflections that I remember off hand and only recall him getting beat once. I thought he played better than the $10 million corner.

I actually thought Roby had a pretty good game. I think he was on Brown for majority of the game and contained their #1 receiver well. Extremely close to forcing three turnovers. Led the team in tackles.

The Bills came out with a great offensive game plan. They kept the game simple for Allen and took advantage of the team's strengths. The Texans' tackling on defense was horrible.

The OL was losing in the trenches and DW wasn't handling the pressure well. I wasn't a fan that BOB wasn't trying something "new" to try to get the offense going... like play with more tempo or attack the edges with Duke.

The Watt sack felt like it ignited the whole team. I don't think we win w/o him.

I feel we slightly benefited from the officiating today. Cool, I'll take it.

Hargreaves is a frustrating player to watch.

Agreed that's the game plan I wish Obrien would employ for this entire offense. Or just run what we've seen work.

Any QB would fold under that type of pressure. Especially when your line is getting abused. They missed on a lot of their blocking assignments.

I was screaming at the TV. " Uptempo Obrien, uptempo!"

The Watt sack was a game changer indeed. The entire team fed off of that great energy.

Very rare lol but hey I'll take it too. Oh and about time.

Yes he's very frustrating to watch. I'm like dude why are you trying to tackle a TE that freaking high. Take his legs out from underneath him.

I'm hoping that 1st half was the last half we ever see the unprepared, unmotivated Texans in the playoffs. Had it been a better offense than the Bills', we woulda been done. I'm hoping the team and coaches have turned the page on laying eggs in front of the home crowd, can play looser, with more confidence and fire for 60 minutes.

Other items...
-Watson and Watt are superheros and deserve better game plans. Watson was 6/8 at the half.
-The Clowney trade "throw-in" Martin played well too, maybe as well as Mercilus today.
-Our D is the worst of all the playoff teams. Our tackling is sub-professional at times. Give up 92 yards to Allen,
hopefully we don't have to face Jackson in Baltimore again.
-Although Buffalo's rush is great, our OL is still bad (7 sacks today, 49 in the reg. season) after trading two #1 picks and drafting 2 linemen early. The special teams benefitted greatly from a new coach, so we still need an upgrade over Mike Devlin--he couldn't even coach Tunsil out of penalties through an entire season.
-Taiwan Asti Eric Jones, RB34! Greatest signing this year!

Folks need to be including Hopkins in this assessment......his 2nd half performance was awesome and a game changer as well.

The battle between two of the hottest young quarterbacks in the NFL did not disappoint. Both showed uncoachable ability en route to an exciting Wild Card bout. In the end, Deshaun Watson’s freakish combination of athleticism and accuracy was too much for even the vaunted Buffalo Bills defense. While he took a few more sacks than you’d like, he also threw a catchable pass on 84% of his targets and made the game-winning scramble completion. He went downfield when needed, going 8-of-10 on throws 10-plus yards in the second half and overtime to lead the Houston Texans to a 22-19 win and advance to the Divisional Round.

Watson's tendency to welcome pressure and take sacks played a significant role in the Texans' 16-0 deficit to start the game. Due in large part to Buffalo's strong play in coverage, Watson's time to throw average was a whopping 3.65 seconds — the longest single-game average for him this season. He also took seven sacks in the contest, good for another season-high for the Houston signal-caller.

Of course, Watson ultimately rallied in the second half and turned in a heroic effort on his way to the comeback win. Bills quarterback Josh Allen, on the other hand, cost his team late with a handful of key mistakes.

You can sugarcoat this loss any way you want, but if you score 19 points in a game in 2019 – especially in overtime, you do not deserve to win. The brunt of the issue falls squarely on the shoulders of Allen, who failed to deliver wholeheartedly in the second half. He simply could not push the ball down the field with any consistency. He went 3-of-10 with zero big-time throws and two turnover-worthy plays in the second half and overtime on throws 10-plus yards downfield. Whether it was play calling or hesitancy from QB1, it cost them the win.

DeAndre Hopkins also showed up late for Houston, catching all four of his targets for 70 yards when against Bills' phenom Tre'Davious White in the second half. Hopkins' best play was his 41-yard snag over the top of White that set up the Texans' game-tying score in the fourth quarter.

If the Texans are going to make it through the AFC playoffs, they’re going to need Bradley Roby to continue to play the way we saw against the Bills. He was targeted twice and didn’t allow a single catch while breaking up one of his targets. The secondary has been much maligned all season long, including Roby at times, but he’s flashed CB1 type ability throughout his career. If the Kansas City Chiefs are their next opponent, Roby’s A game is a must.

Nice post.
I predict Roby will get a pick - hopefully for 6. He was close twice against Bills.
Texans cannot afford to fall behind against quality teams.
Next time it might not finish with a fairy-tale ending.

I've been saying on twitter for a while to #letdeshaunthrow. This whole conservative play calling crap is so bad. Take Deshaun's strengths and play to it instead of forcing this system on him. Is it any surprise that the offense woke up when they finally let him run? The play action bootleg pass is always open but they rarely run it. Get Deshaun out of the pocket and he's a cheat code. Bill doesn't input the cheat code until desperation time. It drives me crazy.

That about sums it up.

He's so confident in "His offense" …. I think we've seen enough of it and he needs to realize "his offense" sucks the air out of the building - getting Watson on the fringes of the defense is his best weapon.

I just don't understand why he cant see it …. until he finally sees it that particular week , didn't we learn that lesson last week , why aren't we doing that from the word GO!

Target locations are one thing and don't really tell the story - I'd like to see a breakdown of where he threw them from - pocket vs fringes of the LOS.

I don’t like him most of the time but this is exactly what we need. Pressure from the press

I thought it was funny, short sighted. The Texans won. & you're calling to fire the HC?

This is BO'bs first real playoff win, beating a healthy playoff team.

Granted scoreless late in the third, I'm sure pancakes wasn't the only one thinking that.

But the difference in the game from Watt's sack to the end of the game was execution. Watch the OL & the movement they got from that point forward.

Laremy Tunsil false starts, two after Watt's sack... didn't stop these guys. Hopkins fumble after the sack didn't stop these guys.

I think Watt's sack lit a spark, but Watson dragging three defenders 20 yards for a TD fanned the flames.

Two different style of backs with two different purposes.
They do however need to run plays outside the tackles more often.

At the beginning of the season Hyde was bouncing runs outside & breaking tackles. Now, not so much.

I did like the option on the goal line, execution wasn't good but it was a great play call. So was the following play. But Duke should have been in on both of those.

I understand Hyde is more of the bell cow while Duke is the change of pace guy. But the offense was doing zilch for the whole first half. Would have liked to see BOB change things up a bit instead of doing the same and hope they simply execute better. Duke was effective when used, would have preferred to see more carries for him.

Duke got the first carry of the game.

I dont think they can win a SB with the Run DeShaun Run offense but I could be wrong. It worked yesterday.

The difference was that Watson didn't spend the first 3 seconds after the snap standing in the pocket , he got to the edge of the defense instead.

I'm not saying run him 20 times a game ala Lamar. But I don't see why they don't do a designed QB run once a quarter out of formations they typically exclusively throw from. He was a killer at the RPO at Clemson and has been super effective when given that type of play in the pros when they've let him. When the line is struggling to block, get him on a designed roll out and let him throw or run depending on what's open. Let Deshaun as a whole carry the team rather than waiting until the game is nearly over to unleash his full skillset.

I agree ,but I think ob is to egotistical to let that happen. He wants his offensive genius to win, not some qb on improv.

Tweet from @PFF_Texans: Deshaun Watson was the main catalyst for the Texans' incredible comeback, leading the team with a 78.3 offensive grade.

Despite an underwhelming first half, Watson's 9.9 yards per attempt ended up being his 4th-highest total of the season. https://t.co/gxwndZIqDW

Anyone who believes this wasn’t watching the game.

JJ Watt’s legendary come back from injury to have a sack was the sole catalyst. Watson fed off it.

Superman and Superboy.

Never understood the point of leaving a game early unless it's so far out of reach that it's next to impossible to come back from. I've already made the investment time wise in getting to the stadium. I've spent money on the tickets and parking. I'm staying there until the game is over just in case something crazy happens. Traffic will probably suck regardless of when you leave so I'd rather spend that time watching the game than sitting in traffic. If I cared about getting home quicker, I'd just watch on TV and save the money.

I hate leaving the stadium when opposing fans are gloating, so a sure loss I do creep out. Only bad exit was that Brock comeback against Indy

There was a great adjustment at halftime, Watson has a huge preference to bail to the right and the Bills became wise to it and committed an extra man to shut this down early in the second half.

This was integral to the O getting shut down in the first half. After half time we saw Watson moving left a few times, even though this makes the pass option less potent, and the running room wasn’t on offer, it meant Buffalo had to account for it where they had had success with what they’d been doing.

Getting Watson on the fringes of the defense is the key to this team being successful …. or not.
And once the Texans start doing stuff on the fringes, the defense will have to respect the outside more. And
maybe then O'Brien's beloved "Up the Middle" will actually work.

Actual reasonable intelligent football analysis! Not sure that is considered appropriate. You might need to give yourself a "point".

Listening to the different broadcasters in the playoffs I have to say outside of having Romo commentate, I am happy we got Booger.

Aikman is so monotone and boring.
Collinsworth is annoying.
Romo is informative.
Booger is entertaining.

Booger going off on OB was great. Plus there was this:

Aikman is monotone but he's knowledable.
Booger is also, as is Romo and he' also colorful with a sense of humor.
How is Collingsworth annoying ? I think he's another pros pro who knows the game and is very insightful a times.

So much for Allen beating us. Hmmm.

Watson .. just wow. It’s so awesome being a fan of his. You can’t teach what he has and it makes guys around him play better.

Nuk showed why he’s the best. He attacked White and won that matchup it was a clutch performance.

JJ returns to the coliseum in victorious fashion. That was a historic effort right there. The mans pectoral muscle was ripped from his skeleton 12 weeks ago. Smh. Amazing.

special teams were a big part of the win they played flawless (other than the weird Carter play - no harm no foul) coverage was great.

RAC did it. Buffalo caused most damage in gimmicky trick stuff. More power to them but base vs base was an even affair and most didn’t think we could stay on the field with that offense. They kept it close enough to give hope.

OBrien? Lol. Another “cmon man” challenge. Inside dive fetish. Nothing new to the offense. Played right into BUF strength and scouting. When he finally dialed up the QB run before the 4th it was the first QB run in how many weeks? = smart. I wonder why it worked? /s. Even the live announcers questioned his coaching. The halftime crew questioned his coaching. The popcorn vendor in 627 questioned his coaching. He didn’t do much to help.

will need to play much cleaner on both sides next week but I enjoyed the win it was nice to comeback on those guys - exorcised some demons there. Now it’s time to purge the 30 point debacle from a few years ago.

IN DESHAUN I TRUST.

I'm delighted with the win and glad I won't have to go into the post season like last year after playing so poorly at home in the WC vs Indy.
It's really been a pretty good year after a very difiicult schedule in RS and ending with 10 wins.
OK so maybe we can build on that next week in KC ?

OBrien? Lol. Another “cmon man” challenge.
As much as I don't like O'Brien I think that he took Hopkins word on that one. Hopkins was adamant that it was pass interference & O'Brien showed he trusted him & challenged it.

I honestly think that these sorts of moves are why O'Brien manages to keep the locker room even when he does bone headed things like name Savage the starting QB.

I can see that but it was too early in the game for that risk especially since the nfl has proven this year they need indisputable evidence of PI

Everyone is going on about the Watt sack which was important for sure, as it turned the tide, but the hero was Watson. He literally put the team on his shoulders and ran that TD in with defenders hanging off him. He then followed up by going for two, and diving in to get them his damn self! That final play in OT was simply amazing!

Props to Watt and the defense for doing their jobs and getting the necessary stops. But Watson deserves all the accolades...

that’s cool, but this is where an overall understanding of the terrain comes in. Situational applications. NFL is making a point to not overturn those calls for the most part. That knowledge mixed with the game progression should have overcome the emotions. I think it was PI said it in real time, but knew they wouldn’t overturn especially in the playoffs.

Watt was a soldier .. but he even admitted that Watson was the spark. Watson won that game yesterday. #begreat

I agree that it was too early to challenge a play. It just did not come across as O'Brien being as clueless as usual to me. I could be wrong but it seemed that he threw the flag a lot quicker than what he usually does.

I hate to say this but what worries me the most about this game is the 7 sacks. As much attention as the Texans have given the OL this year I really expected a better showing in that respect.

They were not all on the oline, but I agree we gotta protect him better.
I would love to see Watson with a top 10 line in front of him.
Devlin has got to go.

What a game.

It hurt to see the Bills lose like that, but that was the most fun, heart pounding, crazy game I’ve seen in a long time.

You can probably now see why Josh Allen is such an enigma. One play he’ll throw a laser across his body, in-beteween three defenders where no one but his own WR can get to it (did it a couple times in OT). And the next play he’ll throw it right to the defense. Then the next play he’ll run for 30 yards. And then the next play he’ll take a 20 yard sack.

Doggoneit!

Oh well. Good game, and best of luck Texan fans.
