The Texans are signing former Los Angeles Chargers starting safety Jahleel Addae, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.

Addae went undrafted out of Central Michigan and played six seasons for the Chargers before being released this offseason.
Addae, 29, started every game for Los Angeles last season, recording 75 tackles, one interception and one sack.

He had 96 tackles two seasons ago for the Chargers along with a half-sack.

For his career, Addae has recorded 372 tackles, 4 1/2 sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

“Addae had played more snaps on the defense over the past six years than any other member of the team but was also due $6 million in 2019. Releasing him saved the Chargers $5 million in salary cap space. ”

“"Jahleel was part of our rookie class my first year with the organization in 2013," Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said in a statement from the team. "Not only did he make the team as an undrafted free agent, he won a starting role at safety and became an undisputed team leader. In his time here, nobody has worked harder, and exemplified what we want in a Charger more than Jahleel. These decisions are never easy, and we will always be grateful for Jahleel's contributions both on the field and in our community."

He is a similar but somewhat more controlled version of Swearinger. Has always been known as an extremely hard hitter. The problem he has is that he is felt to have been burned too often in coverage last year. Many have said that he's a box safety who was forced to play free safety with arrival of the Chargers' 1st rnd pick safety Derwin James there. In 2016 and 2017, before James appearance, he had an 85.2 and 83.4 PFF rating, respectively.............after James, in 2018 a 60.1.

Interesting to know his "origin."

In 2017 he ranked 7th among safeties in snaps lined up in slot percentage so sounds like he is reasonably versatile and gives the DBs solid tackling/physicality missing from K Jax departure. Hopefully our coaches don’t miscast him like it appears he was last season.

I'm not real familiar with him. I know the name, but I just don't watch enough Chargers football to have a good handle on him. But from what I've read, this seems like a good under the radar sort of move. He can easily fill the 3rd safety role vacated by Hal, and give the team some decent depth at that spot.

Yep sounds to me like Crennel is trying to replace some of Matthieu's versatility. I like this move.
Consistent with my post above, it looks like the Texans are planning to put Addae back into his comfort level at strong/box safety.

#Texans signing former Chargers safety Jahleel Addae. Gaine mentioned they needed to find an answer for the retirement of Andre Hal. Addae has starting experience and could be that third safety to allow Justin Reid and Tashuan Gipson to play deep.

Really excited about this value signing. Will be looking at Game Pass some time this week to check out his playoff games against the Ravens and Dolphins where he had a combined 19 tackles starting both games (6 against Ravens 13 against Pats).

Could be a gameplan the Texans deploy against a running QB:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001008744/article/chargers-speedy-secret-plan-stopped-ravens

According to Next Gen Stats, the Chargers used seven defensive backs on 58 of 59 D snaps (98.3 percent) versus the Ravens in the Wild Card round. Across the NFL this season, there were only 353 total defensive plays with seven DBs on the field (50 by the Chargers) -- L.A. allowed 3.9 yards per play with seven DBs versus the Ravens.

"It was top secret," Desmond King said of the game plan, via the team's official website.

Essentially using safeties Jahleel Addae and Derwin James as in-the-box linebackers allowed the Chargersto get more speed on the field to combat Jackson's running.

He hits very hard, but that’s the reason he might not last much longer.
Got rung up twice in a game against the Broncos.

12 things you should know about S Jahleel Addae
Safety Jahleel Addae signed a free agent deal with the Texans on Wednesday night. Here are a dozen facts about the new defensive back, who's rejoining former Chargers' teammates A.J. Hendy and Chris Landrum in Houston.

  1. Played last six seasons with Chargers, appearing in 80 games with 59 starts
  2. Started all 16 games the last two years
  3. Averaged 63.7 tackles per season
  4. Texans senior defensive assistant/OLB coach John Pagano was Chargers' defensive coordinator for Addae's first four years in NFL
  5. Logged a combined 12 tackles in 2 career games vs. Texans
  6. Signed with Chargers in 2013 as an undrafted free agent
  7. Brother Jahmile is an assistant coach at alma mater West Virginia, in charge of the secondary
  8. Parents are from Ghana
  9. Born and raised just east of Tampa, FL, and attended Riverview High School
  10. Played soccer until his sophomore year of high school
  11. Went to Central Michigan as a running back, before switching to receiver and eventually defensive back
  12. Finished college career with 302 tackles, 15 TFL and 8 INT

Addae is going to be a terrific addition to our Safety group, on the field and in the position room, IMO. His skillset rounds out the crew, plus he will hopefully be able to pass on some valuable and hard earned wisdom, insight, and tips to the younger guys. Bring on more of this, Brian Gaine!

IIRC John McClain said he's being brought in to compete for starter role. A reasonable addition if contract reasonable as I expect.

Put him back in the box and we have a very strong S group.

A nice addition after the draft.

@AaronWilson_NFL: Texans' one-year deal for veteran safety Jahlee Addae is worth $1.105 million: $805,000 base salary, $150,000 signing bonus, up to $150,000 roster bonus $9,375 per game on 46-man roster
That would mean only $150,000 is guaranteed.

I predict that Jahlee Addae will be a solid contributor this season and we'll be glad to have him.

People can take digs at Gaine's spendthrift approach, but these under the radar deals allow you to resign your vets and give you flexibility.
I'm curious to see if Mathieu's comments change the way the Texans do Business. We have Addae, Roby, & Kahlil on one year deals. If these guys play well, I wonder if they'll address extensions during the regular season.

Not too sure about the team refusing to negotiate in a players last (only) year of a contract.

I believe the team refuses to negotiate with two years left on a contract?

I thought the team did negotiate with Mathieu but chose not to meet KC's offer.

Could certainly be wrong about that though.

Correct on the 2 years left caveat.
The Texans have almost exclusively (notable exception of Watt) refused to negotiate new contracts prior to one year remaining.

The part to add is that is that they haven't done extensions during a season either. If you don't get a new one done this off-season, it won't be discussed until the next off-season.

I don't understand. These one year contracts are signed during the off-season.

These players who sign one year deals must wait until the end of the contract year before they can negotiate and sign another contract.

If that is the case it appears to be a win win deal for both sides. It worked out well for Mathieu. The team could have retained him if they wanted to meet his price. Am I wrong? The fact that you sometime don't wish to match an offer doesn't necessarily mean you are cheap, most often just prudent.

Where is the downside for the player or team?

HB was saying during the year we could have extended him before FA starts. Then only we are talking to him and we may have gotten the deal we offered accepted without competition. Historically we seem to not like to do this, distraction, gives players more leverage, I don't know. If you are doing 1 year prove its, and the guy is looking strong week 8, I would be open to extensions if it fit the longer term plan.

When have the Texans ever retained their own guys, minus Watt/McKinney/Hopkins? McKinney is the outlier and I'm surprised they kept him because they only pay the Hopkins/Watt level guys and let the Bouye/Brooks/Jones level guys walk. This is another way the Texans org needs to change the way it does business.

Bouye/Mathieu/Brooks/Jones etc...

I suppose the team could affix a value to the player and make a offer to extend. I don't see where that should be a problem.

I don't know if Gaine has the authority to do that, but he should. Times are changing with the team so maybe this will be addressed in the future. Eventually there has to be some stability to your roster.

The way you describe our roster it is mostly devoid of talent.....(minus the few you mentioned.)

Why on earth would you want to retain them? :)

I guess DB/AJ- numerous times/Cushing/JJoe/KJ...etc. don't count?
