State of the O-line

You could trade a 1st/3rd this yr and a 2nd next yr to move up. Just depends on how much you want to give up to get the best player possible to protect Watson. For us we would be willing to move up to do whatever it takes to protect Watson in both the draft/FA.

For Cak not so much.

I suppose I'm in the middle between you two.

Let's see what happens in free agency though before arguing draft day scenarios. I'm wiling to move but I'm not selling the farm.

Sorry, went away for a bit, but think you got my point. We will be at the high end or top with $$'s because we need someone even if we draft a future starter. So if the FA won't come, it is because they want something else. I had a good career in business, in the end and eventually money is always competitive and wont be the tie breaker, other things around life are. Where is your family, where are you comfortable, who do you play with to earn that next deal, etc. A good FA window is needed to give us maximum flexibilty in the draft

Who do y'all think will be the 1st OT off the board? I think Dillard/Williams/Taylor are all in conversation due to various strengths. I'd potentially be willing to trade up for Dillard or Williams in the 10-16 realm. I think big players for OT are Cinn, Clev, and Minn.

I think I'd potentially be willing to give up a 2020 1st and 2019 2nd.

Here are the OTs I like for our 1st Rd conversation:

J. Williams (trade up)
A. Dillard (trade up)
J. Taylor
C. Ford
D. Risner
Y. Cajuste (trade back and draft in late 1st)

Is there a way to find who gave away the most sacks out of the 62 on the OL last year. Sacks allowed stat?

Someone posted a breakdown of all 65 (including playoff game) within the last week. Sorry I don't remember which thread. Maybe state of the o-line. Davenport gave up the most but that was weighted heavily to his time at RT.

If the Texans are lucky enough to land Brown.....then I think the LT issue can be put to rest this season. It seems as though Gaine, OB and Devlin aren't willing to throw the towel in on Davenport. I would turn my focus to the next 2 areas of concern on the OL, RT and C. A big toss up would come down to Risner or McCoy at 23 if both are still on the board. Risner has the ability to cover any spot from RT, C to RG....that's a plus. McCoy definitely helps the team at C and could move to OG.

If Brown and Davenport don't make the difference this year, the Texans will have to release Davenport and hope Brown delivers in 2020. LT would be the top priority in the 2020 draft.

They should all be fired if Davenport is the Starting LT next year.

This doesn't take into account how much they had to adjust the offense to compensate for Davenport's crap play

They should be fired if the offensive line play doesn't improve. Especially if they overspend for a player who had the luxury of playing for a well coached team with the best QB to ever play this game. We all seen how much the Giants offensive line improved after overpaying for Solders. Belichick and Brad have a lengthy record of making subpar players actually look like all pro.

IMO they're living on borrowed time. But yeah, one more straw on the pile.

The GM and HC are living fat on an 11-5 season and 4 years remaining of guaranteed contracts. the OL coach may be a handy scapegoat, imo the Texans will have to implode (6-10 or worse w/Watson healthy) for BOB and Gaine not be employed the Texans for 2020 season.

Borrowed time, imo, after a 2nd embarrassing home loss in the playoffs.

But yeah. Contract extension, 11-5 woo hoo & all that jazz.

Gaine succeeded in delivering a very nice first year draft and making some nice moves in FA last year. OB and his staff delivered a very questionable 11-5 season. If Gaine delivers another solid draft class and some solid pieces in FA, then OB and his staff deliver an outcome identical to last season......no way in hell does Gaine get his walking papers along with OB. OB and his staff should be out and Gaine can name his own HC.

Obviously the former GM/HC weren't held to the same standards

He's gone. I'm not asking for him to come back. & he was never one & done in the playoffs.

I can't understand why you don't hold this guy to the same standard you held the last guy to.

Tell you what. You find me a post in Kubiak's first two years where you said, "He just needs more talent." & I'll understand.

But you saw a crappy coach regardless of talent.

Every thing we thought we were going to get with Kubiak, we got. WCO, ZBS, plays that worked within a system.

We haven't got half the things we thought we were going to get with BO'b. We don't have a game plan offense. We don't have a multiple offense. We don't have a disciplined team. We don't have TEs & RBs incorporated into the passing game.

All we have are a bunch of excuses.

If BO'b delivers another embarrassing 1st round play off losing he should bounced, if it were me, the papers would be drawn up ready to be signed in plain view.

I don't care if we back in at 7-9 but advance in the playoffs. He's safe.

But if we go 16-0 in the regular season but can't score an offensive point in the playoffs, he's gone.

Meh, Texans won't make 11 wins next season with their schedule as things stand right now - their schedule looks like murderers row.
However, I hope they do make 11 W's - if they do, it will prove they are legit and will demonstrate a marked improvement on 2018 play.

And our opinion doesn't really count now does it? Unless you one of the (major) minority owners?

Schedules really don't mean anything at this time of year... last year at this time and even after preseason the AFC South was one of if not the worst division in the NFL. And all teams in the division have the same schedule outside of 2 games

I saw this on Walter football this morning:

https://walterfootball.com/nflhotpress/article/Texans-Have-Interest-in-Trent-Brown-in-Free-Agency

I like some of the other names listed as possibilities as well - specifically Roger Saffold and Mitch Morse. If we could sign Brown, Saffold and Morse I’d consider that an excellent off season
I'd be in on DJ Fluker also to bolster our run game.
There are several names out there but I suspect most teams to resign their champs.
If not, there will likely be a run on OL in the draft - a draft with plenty OL talent btw.

Correct, this is what you would do and that's fine. The history of the TEXANS shows the only time a massive change occurs is after a disaster season. One like 2018, in 2019 again means all of us bitching more and more BOB/Gaine in 2020.

The Cal McNair era is a new era and should be judged on such..

Do y'all agree?

Cal McNair has been a part of the decision process for the last several years especially after his dad became ill. The quote in my signature is from pre-OZ. Personally, I do not expect the Texans to be run radically different because the person running it has been a part of the process all along.

On a fan based message board......our opinions are the only thing that counts. Has anyone viewed any replies from Cal, Gaine, OB, his coaching staff or for that matter, anyone from any of the other 31 NFL franchises or NFL offices? Nope, this is just a fan based discussion board that brings Texans fans from around the world here to throw ideas around......nothing more and nothing less.

I will admit....some of our ideas have been pretty damned good.

If we don't want to talk about my opinion then why quote my opinion & reply to it. Look again. The post you quoted started "in my opinion."

If you want to talk about what will happen, or what won't happen apart from my opinion, there's no need to quote my opinion."

Dude, you are the one that quoted me in a comment I was making in response to a comment OT had made. Offseason getting to you? Should maybe I drink a bit more and try to catch up?

Fk'n damned if you do and doubly damned if you don't

I hate people

BTW, ananaaside between you and I, last time I made an innocuous comment about it being the offseason you and @badboy conspired to run me off for over a year. Never again my friend. I just don't give a **** about your opinion any longer. As @Thorn would say, ya'll ca KMA$$

I was fully on board with Smithiak until 2010.

I'm not going back that far to look at my posts. If you want to go back and look at my 2009 posts be my guest. After 2010 I knew these guys were never going to bring a championship to Kirby.

The difference is last yr was the 1st yr that BOB got to work with a guy that shared his vision of what talent he needs. I've said many times that this was going to be a 3 yr rebuild, so I'm giving Gaine/BOB the same amount of Rope that I gave Smithiak.

I'm done talking about this with you.

This post is a realistic look at where the Texans are vs the lynch mob of a few unrealistic posters who defended the former regime regardless whether it was clear as day the org was stuck in the mud under their watch.

Funny thing is I called 2010 after the 2009 season where I could see the org rested on their laurels after the orgs 1st winning season with a winning season. In fact next seasons schedule mirrors the 2019 schedule. I cant wait to see the difference (Hopefully) in how differently the new regime does vs the the old regime.

Yes an improved OL will naturally help.

Given OB's proclivity for running up the middle imo we need a bowling ball RB with great balance. Someone under 6', an Emmitt style 5'9" 220 lb low center of gravity RB whose legs churn.

They should be looking to make Miller the compliment or cut him.

I definitely agree with the bolded. I have been wanting to see them add that kind of back for several years.

Concerning Miller, I would like to see what he can do behind a solid o-line. I think he could be a dynamic weapon behind a line that can consistently open holes in the areas where the play is designed for them to be.

Good oline or not Miller doesn't break tackles. Awfully expensive for a back that not a threat in pass game, doesn't break tackles and low top end speed.

Huh? Not the biggest Miller fan and you're right about breaking tackles but he's fast, ran a 4.40 s 40. And he catches 77% of the balls thrown to him.

Yep,

He looked really slow on that TD run against the Tacks.

Miller can catch the ball well. He's poor in pass pro. He ran the ball much harder last yr. I want to see what he can do with an avg OL.

I really wonder what some fans see when they're watching the games.
