I'll take Deshaun Watson over any 1st rounder at #4 this year. 
I think we can do a lot with 8 total picks, especially now that the NFL allows the comp picks to be traded.

Solder is not years past his prime. He's in his prime and has 5+ years left if family issues don't intrude.
The 2nd round pick is the one I'm still grumbling about. I'll take my chances with DW4 coming back and having a great career over any FA QB or 2018 draft pick. Pay what you must for Solders and Norwell, use every avenue to acquire the best possible RG and RT.

I'm glad Ricky picked Watson and hope can stay healthy. I would've gone a different direction in last yrs draft and gotten my QB this yr. I think what most are upset with is giving away a 2nd to get rid of Os.
With that said, Gaine has enough cap room to add 3 premium FA's or 2 premium FA's and 2 good FA's. That will allow many of the holes to be filled. I'm very interested to see how McNair allows Gaine to go about his business. Is McNair willing to spend the $$$$ to get the premium guys? Will the premium guys want to come to the Texans org after some of the comments McNair made? Is McNair going to allow Gaine to draft guys with things like DWI's/Smoking Pot on their records.
These are the types of changes that need to be made if the Texans are going to be championship contenders.
He's 30 in his prime and has 5 years of prime performance & durabiliy remaining ? That's a lot of tread on the tires and I can only hope you know what you are talking about because if he does decide to continue his NFL career and is willing to relocate from the NE area I figure we will be principle contenders for his services and his position is our most significant and important need.
Not to worry because I'm confidant we will make a selection in the 2nd round (or higher) of this years Draft. And hey Doc, I like your attitude bout DW4 !

I was just offereing up a hypothetical situation for discussion which was what would one do in this years FA and with the 4th overall in this Draft if the Watson trade & pick had never happened last year.
I'm still confused by your continual suspicion of McNair not willing to spend $$$. I think we're all seeing an owner who has shelled out big contracts, gone through contract hell, seen big $$ contracts spent on unproven/guy's coming off of injury and is trying to learn the right business model to follow. I think McNair is every bit as serious about a championship, but it's a bit more tricky when you're the one writing the checks. We need to keep in mind that the Texans didn't get the sweetheart deals the Jags and Panthers got when they came into the league. I think the JJ deal was a no brainer, but the Schaub, Foster and Cushing deals concerned McNair, With one or two exceptions, McNair has allowed his GM's to run the show as they see fit. Your fixation on earning money over a championship is on you.

With 60'mil to spend in FA I hope you're right and McNair lets Gaine spend the $$$$ to improve the team. It's only happened once before, when McNair spent $$$$ on JJo/Manning. Hiring Wade probably had alot to do with McNair opening the checkbook. I see the franchise in a crisis mode like they were in the 2010/ 2011 offseason. Gaine has to get this offseason right especially in FA or this team is going to be in the dumpster for awhile. If Gaine gets this offseason right particularly in FA the Texans should be a contender for yrs to come. If Watson stays healthy.
I'm not usually a fan of making a big splash in FA. Usually the FA "winners" are regular season losers. In this instance, I'm OK with making a splash on OL. That's usually a pretty safe bet, Jeff Allen not withstanding. Allen was also not playing his natural position, LG.

If Gaine and McNair don't start spending the money on FAs to help this damned team, fans are going to start voting with their wallets. I know I have swore off purchasing any Texans item that will directly benefit McNair. My choice is more about McNair and not about the product on the field...yet.
Spending on FAs for the mere sake of spending is ridiculous and a good way to get into cap hell. There is no verifiable evidence that McNair has any issue with spending money in FA. For all we know, Smith really was as bad at his job as it appeared and so is O'Brien.
I'm very interested to see how the offseason plays out under Gaine.
I haven't bought any Texans gear in the last 2 yrs.
I also don't wear Texans gear to the games.
This yr I wore Astros gear to the Texans games hoping to let my feelings be known.
Sure all serious Texans fans are intently interested and watching Gaines every move because right now it's the key to this teams future along with Watsons health.
I'm usually much more interested in the draft than FA but with no picks until the 3rd and some serious needs on the OL, FA has my full attention.
I'm a big Draft myself and it's one of the events that helps to get me thru the long offseason and I really miss the Texans from all the mock Drafts. Still follow the mocks a little
but obviously not the same this yea for Texans fans. And yes this will mean extra emphasis on FA.

2017 Astros: Earn It!
I forgot to mention this yesterday, but I was watching NFL Live and Adam Schefter mentioned the Seahawks will likely trade five-time All Pro safety Earl Thomas this off-season. And Schefter said the Texans are one of the teams being most aggressive on an Earl Thomas trade.
That was surprising to me because what picks do we have to trade from the upcoming draft? Or would we trade future picks in 2019 or young players already on our roster? I have to imagine the Seahawks will want at least a late first-round pick if not a couple of second-round picks, which we clearly don't have in the 2018 draft. Could a third-round pick in the 2018 draft and a second and fourth-round pick in the 2019 draft get it done?
I just don't see us parting ways with our 2019 first-round pick...

I'd love to have Earl Thomas. He turns 29 years old in May. He still has two or three more All-Pro years left in him, IMO. He is also a native Texan, aka a Texas Longhorn and played high school ball at Orange, Texas.
Adding one of the best safeties in the game.
A guy that isn't totally washed up like Ed Reed was.
That could be a pretty nice acquisition for this team.

Everybody likes good barbecue, but you can't buy a decent sauce to put on it. They are all polluted with sweeteners and contain tomatoes, which don't belong on BBQ. Here is my recipe for a good sauce:
¼ cup pureed chipotle peppers with their adobo sauce
¼ cup worcestershire sauce
¼ cup soy sauce
¼ cup liquid smoke
1/3 cup malt vinegar
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1½ tsp mustard powder
1 Tbsp ground sage
1 tsp Accent or other MSG
¼ – ½ tsp xanthan gum powder, for thickening
optional mold inhibitor
Mix the ingredients with a blender and refrigerate. Let the flavors marry for a couple of days.
Put some on some brisket slow smoked over oak wood and cherry, and you may never eat anything else again.

Just one piece like Thomas in that backfield would make a huge difference and may be enough to fix the DB corp or at least make it good enough.
This would free up the draft and the rest of the cap space for current player extentions and maybe one more vet piece for the oline.
It may not be ideal, but we would still be a force in the AFC.

Thomas may be cheaper than you think.
Thomas has only one more year left in his contract. Would a team really give up a 1st for a possible one-year rental? And if a team wants to retain him, then they’ll have to be prepared to pay him. He’ll probably command highest paid safety money.
Seattle also doesn’t have much leverage here. Thomas is threatening to hold out w/o a new contract, and word is Seattle doesn’t want to break the bank to retain him. So whoever trades for him will probably need to sign him to a new contract as well and be willing to make him the highest paid safety in the league.

As someone who has watched a lot of Seahawks games because of my region, I would be thrilled to see Earl Thomas III in a Texans uniform. He would certainly turn around the Texans back end. Throw money at this guy and go get him, Gaine!
