Travin Howard another big omission. Not sure why he didn't get an invite. A hybrid LB/S with 350 tackles over the last 3 years, you would think the NFL would want as many measurements on the guy as possible.

I think the shear number of underclassman coming out (130?) has been a factor in the combine invites. The NFL wants to keep the number of players to a controllable amount. It's the undersized guys that seem to have been left out.

I heard on the radio that something like 350 guys are invited to the combine this year, but there is only something like 200 jobs available. If true, maybe we get some fair talent with the few picks we have. These numbers just don't sound right though.

In the ballpark of being right - 7 rounds 32 teams + 32 comp picks = 256 picks and the combine sites says they invite up to 335 players to participate.

http://www.nflcombine.net/faq/how-many-players-are-invited-to-attend-the-nfl-scouting-combine/

How many players are invited to attend the NFL Scouting Combine?
The number of athletes per position varies from year-to-year depending on the available talent. However, we are able to accommodate and process up to 335 total athletes each year.

I've mentioned this before, but the Texans could be very fortunate this draft b/c of its depth and the fact that the majority of their positions of need are really deep. I might even venture to say that there will be some very decent prospects available as UDFA's.

This is a great draft to build quality depth for the future.

Let's hope we have a good scouting team to find the guys we need.

I haven't had a chance for some reason to have a good look at the draft except for bits and pieces.
What is this draft deep at - just in general or certain positions?

Certain positions

Strong: CB/OL/TE/RB/interior DL.

Weak: Edge/ILB is lacking depth/WR/Safety

Thanks for that.
I had an idea it was deep at RB.
Just remember Running backs are a dime a dozen and teams like the Jags who expend high picks on backs are especially foolish.
We can find some backs among the undrafted rookies.

I know we got lucky with Foster doing it that way, but the running game is such an integral part of any offense and just too important to be an afterthought.
Foreman will be coming back from an injury and there is a possibility he may have lost a bit and Lamar Miller just has not impressed.
Yes, I understand our running game should be better with a better Oline, but a better running game also helps the oline.
Personally, I won't mind using one of our 3rds to pick up a good RB - especially if it allows us to cut Miller and make more cap space.
Blue also is not what we need so it is time to try our luck in the draft again, or pick up a Jerrick McKinnon in FA.

Agree but in another post I offered this angle:

RD3, draft RB, Josh Adams out of Notre Dame. Reminds me of Eddie George, RB Oilers/Titans (Ohio St). George would've been an O'Brien type of runner.

I would sign Blue. He actually looked pretty decent at the end of the season and at the price he would command, the Texans would be hard pressed to do better. If the OL has been addressed, I like the prospects of what Blue could help deliver when called upon. His working knowledge of this offense would also factor into the plus side.

Ervin is same type of player as Miller...only he's a lot cheaper and younger.

Foreman is going to be tough to call based on his injury and recovery. I'm not prepared to count him out but I wouldn't be drafting Adams if all my chips were in. More importantly, I don't want to see Foreman rushed back onto the field before he's ready. With that in mind, I'd extend a contract to DeMarco Murray as a veteran insurance policy who'd be signed to a 1 year deal. If Foreman needs a full IR season, this could be a very inexpensive way to do it while getting O'Brien another back that should fit his RB mold.

Adams / Foreman / Blue / Ervin / Murray

This could be a very productive but low cost position if the OL is fixed along the way.

Why does anyone want an Eddie George? He was a career 3.6 ypc and over 3.9 ypc just twice with 2 4.1 ypc seasons.

Again, my opinion...not yours. You are welcome to input your recommendations since this is a board discussion.

My opinion is you're projecting what you like, big tall RBs, onto OB.

My opinion is also that OB barely has a clue what he wants in a rushing game or RB.

Even assuming GM inadequacies OB & Devlin have made a shambles.

Personally unless a RB shows undeniable Eric Dickerson/Jim Brown talent, I don't like RBs over 6'. Low center of gravity generally wins. I'll take a 5'9" 215 lb Emmitt Smith over 6'3" 235 lb Eddie George every day of the week and twice on Sundays. So will the HoF. The short one was by far the better power rusher.

I'll go middle of the road and take the 5'11" 230 lb Earl Campbell :D

Smith had the benefit of a HOF OL at their peak years...and thinking back to the Titans years with George, the beginning of the end of that great OL was arriving. I could've used Dickerson for the same example. Also, Earl Campbell is my favorite RB of all time. But, on my opinion and my opinion alone, I like what Blue was doing down the stretch and with a better OL, I think the potential is there for a better return both on the field and in terms of his cap hit.

Example of what? Eric Dickerson and Eddie George are polar opposites as runners.

An even cheaper cap hit would be drafting another 6th rounder, someone with potential to get better.

I would agree if the better option is there for the taking. I still like Josh Adams in RD3 if he's still on the board since this covers Foreman if he doesn't make it back this season. If he does, then I like them as a tandem.

Thanks, I was looking for this last night.

The NDT Scouting site has Tyrell Crosby with 32-1/4" arms, while Walter Football has Crosby's arms at 35-1/4". Difference between an OG and OT.

Browns supposedly willing to deal one of their top picks. Would you be willing to give up what’s necessary to move up for saquon Barkley at 4?

Watson, Hopkins and Barkley would be pretty sick.

I think I would depending on the price. I think he’s as good as Elliot and a good rb can help protect the qb as well.

Good showing on the bench today with 29 reps. I’m a big fan of his game. I think he’s going to be really good.

No...

If you're move that far, get the top LOT available

I don't think there is a realistic price for the Texans to get Barkley...Would have to involve multiple future picks and a high-level player we probably don't think is really tradeable. It would make the Texans more top heavy and weaken the already weak depth.

I agree Barkley might be that good though.

What would you propose Gaine trade Bellage is going to light to get to #4? No 1st/2nd rd picks, I dont see how they would have the ammo unless trading Hopkins and a 1st. Or Clowney and multiple draft picks.

I would trade up for Guice in the 2nd using future draft picks, or just take Bellage in the 3rd. Bellage is going to tear up the combine.

It doesn’t look like Orlando Brown has prepared for the combine at all. Looks sloppy and moves sloppier.

Desmond Harrison ran the 40 in 4.75 @ 292 lbs. I don’t think he’s ready to start in the league at Tackle, but he could earn playing time as a blocking TE in the mean time. As Davenport did this season with the Texans.

Ohio C/G Billy Price suffered a partial pec tear yesterday during bench press. An MRI has been performed, but results are a little cloudy as to if he will require surgery. Unless this tear is minimal, it would be unwise not to repair it in an NFL offfensive lineman. No matter what, it is likely that this injury takes him out of the 1st round.

Orlando Brown having an awful combine; slotted as a late first rounder

Rough combine workout for Oklahoma OT Orlando Brown just 14 reps of 225 pounds and a 5.77 40 yard dash time. Had been mentioned as potential first rounder.

At #nflscoutingcombine, #OhioState C Billy Price says pec injury is minor, based on MRI and assessment by #Colts doctors. No bruising even. He’s relieved. Gonna get a 2nd opinion. If surgery req’d, 4 mos. off. Says he will be fine for training camp. He’s done here.

Best of Show from 1st OL group:

Will Hernandez - UTEP - G - Knew he was tough, had no idea he was this athletic
Austin Corbett - Nevada - OL - Smooth athlete who is probably a best fit in a ZBS
James Daniels - Iowa - C - Shows great balance
Sam Jones - Arizona State - G - Good size for an interior lineman with good movement skills
Desmond Harrison - West Georgia - OT - In another league athletically, probably a lock for the 2nd day now

Do we really think that McNair permits Harrision to remain on the Texans Board - 3 HS and how many colleges ? sounds like real head-case.

Disappointed that Crosby didn't have that sweet bubble-butt & huge thighs that many Bro lineman have instead flat-azz and bird-legs - white boy physique. But Crosby does looks very athletic and better length that what i expected.
Dream scenario for oline for me would be to sign FA Solder to play LT and draft Crosby to play RT but dunno if Cosby makes it out of the first round ?

Every mock I've seen has Orlando Brown in the first round so do we think he drops out of the top round because of a combine performance ? I doubt it because these are offensive lineman we are talking about people.

By the way, I compared Orlando Brown to Zach Banner earlier...I meant that Banner was a 4th round pick, not Brown. I expect Brown to go late 2nd-mid 3rd. In league where QB gets rid of the ball quickly, I suspect Brown will play.
