2017 NFL Draft - 1st Round discussion thread

I'm not saying failure should lead to firing, I'm saying there should be consequences for consistent failure which our front office displays.
 
I'm going against the flow here.... We needed a QB, and Watson can play the position. The team is pretty solid other than our OL, and it can be repaired with a few moves. It doesn't require 1st round picks to fix an offensive line to a point where they can compete. We've got a great group of receivers to compliment this kid. And our defense has at least two good years left in them. I'll see you guys in the Playoffs next year, and you can whine about those draft picks then. For now, I'm happy... and this from a guy barely hanging on to even watching this team. Do I love our front office? Uh NO... is this coach worthwhile? I've called him Ed Biles II since he came onboard.
 
If we were going to use our first and next years first as capital I'd have rather had jimmy g.

I'm just not a fan of Watson at all, but I hope like hell im wrong.

Without any talent we will stink more. There are some good players out there that will help us this year.
Talent acquisition is the key. That is why the Texans are where they are at. The Texans are not true contenders.

Show me the last team to go 9-7 two years in a row without a QB. Show me WTF Jacksonville, Tennessee, & even the Colts have done with their franchise QBs.
 
It's not that I don't like the player.. I hate this front office.

He needs to much work and he isn't worth 2 1st round picks. They should've asked next for year's 2nd back atleast.

Houston gets:
Deshaun Watson
2017 4th round pick (#142)
$16 million(?) in cap relief

Cleveland gets:
Brock Osweiler (and his salary)
2017 1st round pick (#25)
2017 6th round pick (#188)
2018 1st round pick
2018 2nd round pick

I know Houston needed to make a move, but that's a really really expensive move. If Watson turns out to be all-pro or something, that's actually a reasonable trade, but if he turns out even just average, it's hard to see it. I hope Watson lives up to what it's cost the Texans to make these moves.

Who's butthurt? Watson is a prospect with flaws in his game who threw 17 ints last season who has no legit QB to sit and learn from. Am I supposed to be excited about this?

Agreed. Hard to win with a rookie battling with Savage.

Win now mode, Watson or Jimmy G (and your next year's 1st)?
 
We've never had a quarterback, that's all I know. 2 of any other position we add is not going to put us over the top. You can say whatever you want about the price, if the kid pans out, it was a steal. There are very few good ones.

The two moves are not connected in any way except that they were between the same two teams. Texans did not need to trade Osweiler in order to get Watson. You can't lump that terrible Osweiler trade in with this one.
 
I'm sure this was BOB's pick.

The Texans will be better but will never win a SB.

I will say I would be upset if I ever find out we wanted Mahommes, which the reports have been saying. But that could have been a well played smoke screen to get KC to tip their hand.

But if this is the guy Rick & Bill tagged... I'm fine with giving up our first, second, & Osweiler to net a 4th, a top 3 QB in this draft & $10M...

The reality is that it is more likely than not that he winds up being an average QB or worse. That is just how it goes in the NFL. It isn't about "but what if he's great", or even "he will definitely be great". If you hit on QB once it will pretty much make your franchise and legacy for a decade or more. If you think he has a better than average shot of working out, and you're planning on making the playoffs this year then you essentially spent 2 mid 20's picks for a shot at a franchise QB. Its not like lucking into Brady, you have to make a move. I actually like this even more because of where the salary will be slotted. No way a guy falls to you at 25, and if you think he's got a shot, you want the 5th year on his rookie deal. I don't know what's not to like.

But, i have to, HAVE TO, think in a jump that big they all signed off on it. No way they jump 13 spots in the first round if ob isnt onboard...

I mean it's not like we were trading up from the very bottom or even into the top 10..we moved up 13 spots. Ricky continues to get ass raped.. AND BY THE BROWNS!?! THE #%&!ING BROWNS!! My God.

Problem is **** up his the only thing our front office does. Bortles isn't a franchise QB. The tacks finished 9-7 last year same as us and I couldn't name a player on that team other than Mariotta. Clots weren't far behind at 8-8 with no defense, no offensive line, and so so receivers. You make it sound like an accomplishment having a 9-7 record without a legit QB. It's pretty damn easy when your team plays in a **** division.

So, you'd rather have the 3rd rated offensive tackle in this draft and no legit QB at the helm? Giving up next year's first hurts, but the Texans suck so much in the 2nd that we won't miss th other pick.

If Watson pans out, a good QB is worth multiple late first round picks
 
Watson had fastest release in the draft, and same as Aaron Rogers. he throws picks, but also some of that was on his receivers. KId is a winner when lights are on, and a leader. He needs honing, and may not fit exactly what BOB wants, but the kid can play and win

There is so much crap circulating about their relationship it's hard to say. But Watson did mention he spoke to coach and he told him to bring his attitude and be ready to work. So hopefully he is truly excited for Watson.

From the get go I didn't like him because he's only a 3 year junior, that's high risk and history is against him. His 17 INTs is scary and partly aresult of his change up. That will only get worse in the NFL. Especially when you're not playing in the spread.

They should of got a draft pick back with exchange for that first.

On a roll with posts that I am totally in agreement with.

Honestly, I'm not sure if Watson is going to be good in the NFL. I don't think anybody knows. What I see though is a mental makeup that is very strong and a level of poise that is difficult to find. He may have some decision making errors on his resume, but that's coachable. He works extremely hard, has a good attitude, is driven, multi-dimensional. I'm not sure what there is to be upset about.

I never said I wanted an offensive tackle period. But as of now at pick 18 not one offensive lineman has been taken yet in the draft...

They most certainly played alot of spread in his time there. They ran no huddle a ton too. Hard to be perfect when your running no huddle that often and have miscommunications. Easy to make some bad mistakes in that situation. He'll learn. I think he has the mental makeup to learn a great deal quickly. I think he'll be ready to go by mid year, I really do.
 
I was OK with a swing for the fences approach last year but two years in a row is a bit much. I think in one off-season this team just crippled itself for years to come. I much rather would have taken Kizer at 25 or BPA. Even if Watson isn't horrible this team needs an O-Line and we need draft picks to get that O-Line. This is dumb.

The Texans are doing more for the Browns this offseason than the Browns Management has done for itself in a decade, thinks about that, the Freaking Browns are punking this organization!!!!! Damn....

Watson can play the position but Brock also played the position. Horribly!
