3rd round pick Braxton Miller WR Houston texans

Have to admit I am surprised. I had two receivers in top three but this one seems to be pure risk. Several guys I'd rather have.

Braxton Miller (WR)
HT: 6'1" WT: 201LBS.

POSITION: WR

SCHOOL: Ohio St.

ARM LENGTH: 31 3/4"

HANDS: 9 1/8"

Overview
One of the more interesting stories in college football in 2015, Miller's descent from two-time Big Ten MVP to third-string passer could have ended badly. But after missing 2014 with a shoulder injury, Miller took on the challenge of switching to receiver for his senior year. Bragging that he was the "best athlete in college football", Miller looked prophetic with outstanding open-field moves and speed in the limited opportunities he received this season (24 catches, 329 yards, three TD receiving; 40 carries, 234 yards, one TD rushing). His elusiveness with the ball wasn’t surprising, as he had rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2012 and 2013, but the natural hands he showed as a receiver make him an intriguing prospect.

PICK ANALYSIS:
"He has a great skill set. He was a back-to-back player of the year in the Big Ten. He's a very elusive player and has top-end speed. He was a great teammate; elected captain for us." -- Ohio State coach Urban Meyer

ANALYSIS
Strengths
Considered one of the leaders for the winningest senior class in college football history. Immediately checks boxes for height, weight and speed. Features legitimate vertical acceleration to climb over the top on deep routes. Hands are good enough, but concentration is even better. Uses well-timed leaps and dives to make the demanding catches. Capability as a zone-read quarterback create added value. Has loose hips for jitterbug elusiveness in space and it isn’t easy to get a solid hit on him.

Weaknesses
Just one year of work at receiver and has limited production as a pass-catcher. Reliant upon speed and athletic ability over skill at the position. Needs major route work. Upright into his routes with very little sell from his upper body to create hesitation from defenders. Not yet ready to work the intermediate routes. Used deep and short. Needs to improve his ball security and get ball tucked away in proper arm.

Draft Projection
Rounds 2 or 3

Sources Tell Us
"He's going to go by at least the third round because of his speed and athleticism. He's got some traits that will get him drafted early and a team will worry about coaching him up after they get him in." -- NFC executive

Bottom Line
Miller had a storied two-year run at quarterback where he was able to produce explosive, winning plays for the Buckeyes. His transition to a new position will be a work in progress that may last longer than some expect, but his size, speed and athletic traits are appealing. Miller’s ability with the ball in his hands could help his cause, but the difference between being a gadget player and productive receiver will rest with his ability to digest coaching and convert it on the field.

I get the feeling that O'Brien wants to run more of a college scheme than really follow the Patriots. This team is being built to spend the afternoon with 4+ receivers running primarily slants, 50/50's and bubble screens. B Miller will play slot, Fuller outside and L Miller motioning into or out of the backfield - with too many wildcat and trick plays.

Slot and a return man i think.

Texans motto this offseason is playmaker.

Miller, wf, Brax. Damn. This offense got a new dimension this offseason.

Sorry, but I'm not ok with this pick. I like B.Miller just fine, & I don't mind making a position of strength stronger... but... this just don't feel right.

Greatest show on turf??? NRG's going to be turf again right?

I just don't know. My mind's been blown. Don't know what to think.

Miller really lets us open the playbook. You could see him getting the ball in a variety of ways and he knows how to find the endzone too.

Let me repeat myself and combine thoughts into this one thread

The offense has seriously increased its raw speed and big play ability when the moves are taken as a whole versus them apart. The Texans are attempting to move away from the methodical, must execute every play stuff of the past few years. sure, there is plenty of questions of the how and who, but I at least see them as trying to change the nature of the offense. whether it works is what they play football games to find out.

I don't think that the Texans are thinking of the offense in terms of number 2-4 (hopkins given) versus having 3-4 Wrs sets with guys that have cause different match-up problems. I will be interested to see if the Texans try to upgrade TE and what type. I think the Texans will some version of the pro spread, passing match-up offense. What we saw the first two years was more modified Kubiak with some stuff thrown in than what O'Brien envisions as how to play offense in 2016.

My belief is BOBs offense passes early and often. With being shaky at best undercenter and a one man show passing game, the Texans still were 10th in the league in pass attempts in 2015, but were 30th in completion percentage and 29th in yards per attempt.

Can't believe they took another WR with Andrew Billings available. I guess the plan is go run-and-shoot on offense and have Covington and Wilfork play 100% of the downs on defense.

Braxton Miller ran a 4.50 and a 4.55 40 at the combine. I thought that wasn't fast enough for the other WRs in Round 1.

Logic?

We've got Devon Still & Jeffrey Pagan.

It's also different positions.

edit: Also, I don't like the pick. You're not going to get four receivers on the field on a regular basis. You're saying one of those guys Strong, Miller, or Fuller isn't going to work.

Last year the Texans played 4 guys. Hop, Washington, shorts, Mumph...and then strong got a little burn.

Plus I think the Texans will use Miller as more than just a receiver. He will probably be asked to return as well.

Love it. Fuller and brax are guys who can score from anywhere on the field. Im not worried about the crowding at wr or trying to fit them all on the field. Brax has a learning curve before he's an every down slot. In the meantime he can be a returnman - far superior because of his open field ability to anyone we've had in a while.

If we wanna continue on with wildcat packages brax gives it some legitimacy.

Dhop- rolling coverages your way just hit a wall. Have fun.

OB is building a versatile offense that will cause matchup problems no matter who we face. Miller can do a lot of different stuff

IM fine with the pick. The guy is versatile and fast. He's raw but hopefully he'll get coached up.

My biggest concern now is at TE. What we have is garbage at TE.

That's only because Shorts and Washington were hurt. I'd rather use a 3rd on someone you expect to play 16 games.

Hassan Ridgeway and DJ Reader still available

Mumphry played when they weren't hurt. That's 4 guys.

And Miller will probably be in the mix to return kicks and he might get some carries or have other ways we get him the ball.

Both Miller and fuller wanted to be Texans.

Fuller posted pics of himself in a Texans jersey before the draft. Him and strong are good friends. And Miller was asked what team he'd like to go to and he said the Texans because he really likes OB.

I'm hoping Strong is sending Fuller the playbook tonight! On the bright side, we won't need to worry about Fuller showing up overweight.

Here is the reason you take Braxton Miller, try to catch lightening in a bottle. Same goes for Will Fuller. Just like Washington taking two QB's (RGIII & Cousins) one didn't work out but other (4th) did.

Infantry hates when I say something definitive before it's actually proven but this is, by far, the best receiving core, even without a TE, in franchise history.

Seems like everyone else was going LB or DL. There was a disconnect in WR class (other teams boards) & Texans took advantage. Plus added a critical need @ Center.

Day three I would expect them to be a little defensive!
