TEXANS VS JAGS II INJURY REPORT

CloakNNNdagger

Hall of Fame
James has been on the Injury Report for a "foot" since the beginning of Nov through the first week of Dec. Then mid Dec, he was listed as a "calf." Then for the past 2 weeks, he disappeared from the Injury Report altogether. Now it is apparent that he has been dealing all along and playing with a fracture which was extended in yesterday's game.......leading to today's IR.

Clowney did not practice. His injury supposedly does not show "structural" damage. Still in a boot. A ligament is a "structure." An ankle sprain is a disruption of a ligament's integrity. A booted ankle sprain is structural damage.

Just an reminder, Clowney was on the Injury Report with an ankle injury for most of Oct.

I'm amazed how often anything less than an OBVIOUS break on an old fashioned x-ray is considered not STRUCTURAL. It's a very poor definition in my humble opinion when those breaks are sometimes less problematic than other types of structural damage which require more modern means of testing. MRI anyone?

OK. Maybe that's a particularly sore subject with me.

I am sure you have already addressed this, but what is the time line for JJ in the cast?

From my post in the TEXANS VS COLTS II INJURY REPORT thread posted last Friday.:

If we get to rest week 17, I wonder if the two weeks JJ would be able to take off the cast off or do u think he needs sugery ...??? On his hand

I would be surprised if JJ did not play the rest of the season (including any playoff games) with a cast or elaborate splint. Most metacarpal fractures can be reliably treated with conservative non-surgical approach. Only ~3% will go on to require surgical treatment. As an aside thought, JJ may have had a through-the-skin K-wire repair that does not require formal open incisions but would further stabilize the fracture. Some would not refer to this as surgery, but technically it is a "closed" reduction surgical procedure with external cast fixation. This wire would not be removed before ~4 weeks, with the "protective" hand coverage still maintained.

Just one example of the use of K-wire fixation of a 1st metacarpal fracture (of the thumb):

Another example of either the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th a shaft metacarpal fracture of hand:

Doc, I really appreciate you doing these. I don't usually participate in them much as I only use them for info, but they've been very informative.

Thank you very much.

TK, thank you for your kind words. Most would probably not believe how much time and effort is spent in putting together good basic and concise understandable (in lay terms) injury information. :tiphat:

3rd'ed

Invaluable info, for instance I wouldn't expect Clowney to play Sunday and if he does he will either reinjure the ankle or not play well.

Without all of the time Doc spends we wouldn't know this. Thank you 1000 times over. You have given me new insight into a part of football I didn't understand. I used to just go by what the team medical staff put out. Boy was a fool.

At least I feel much better about Weeden coming in if (when) Hoyer is concussed again.

Shorts and Clowney are officially OUT.

Uh, oh.......JJ practiced without a cast............hopefully, because this is a walk-through..........I'll be closing my eyes often if that hand isn't protected with cast or extensive splint come Sunday. He suffered the fracture Dec 10....no broken bones heal to any strength in 3 weeks.

Tania Ganguli
ESPN Staff Writer

Charles James says he didn't really think about the fracture in his foot. He knew it was going to break eventually and wanted to play as much as he could until then. He hopes to watch Sunday's game from the stadium. They won't let him on the sideline on his crutches.

Yeah but word out of the Texans locker room is that JJ had that new "Adamantium Bonding" proceedure done to his skeleton. He should be good to go from here on out...

The cost of this procedure would be prohibitive for most......even the most rich. Hopefully, McNair has not gotten him the cheap Chinese counterfeit version, and gambled the future of the franchise.:bat:

Heard on 610 yesterday evening that Watt practiced without his hand cast; they said it was uncertain whether he would actually try to play Sunday without it.

Hoyer will be the Texans QB. He's had 5 documented concussion (who knows how many not documented)......2 recently close together. It should be so forewarning that way back in 1953, there was a little-referenced article published in The New England Journal of Medicine "Serious recurrent injuries of athletes; contraindications to further competitive participation" which urged players who suffered 3 concussions to leave football forever for their own safety. Some day, we will likely come full circle to the conclusion that was evident over 6 decades ago.

I suspect that this will eventually bring about an end to Boxing in all forms considering that the Knock Out almost always comes with either a concussion or high risk of one.

A knockout is a concussion by definition. What's also interesting is that the "dummies" that oversee professional Boxing will usually require most boxers to abstain from boxing for a minimum of 30 days after suffering a knockout. But since concussion doesn’t always involve loss of consciousness, boxers might not adhere to this mandatory recovery period.

Thanks. I thought that might be the case, but decided to defer to those who know for sure.

Hasn't Hopkins already had two concussions?

After his 2013 concussion:

As I previously posted before. This is not Hopkins' first concussion. Most are not aware that he sustained a concussion during an auto accident the end of 2011, just before the Orange Bowl. The handful of media that did report it, reported it as a "mild" concussion. They should have done a better job of investigating the incident. Despite the fact that he was allowed to play in the Bowl game within a week of the injury and did well, he did NOT sustain a "minor" concussion...........he sustained full loss of consciousness. Here is the eye witness account by his own receivers coach, Jeff Scott.

Jeff Scott remembers the morning of Dec. 27, 2011 well.

All too well.

Scott, along with his wife Sara, was heading to Memorial Stadium to meet up with the rest of team. They were going to meet, pack up the buses, and head on the road to the 2012 Orange Bowl in Miami to face West Virginia.

That’s when the Clemson wide receivers coach saw a car crashed on the side of the highway.

That car belonged to then-sophomore receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

Scott and his wife were on a frontage road when they recognized the car to be Hopkins’ and they “got around there pretty quick” to arrive on the scene.

Scott got out of his car and braced himself for the worst possible news. After all, he didn’t know the severity of the accident. He didn’t know if Hopkins was hurt, or even worse, dead.

“When we got out of the car, the police detective was walking up to the car and it was one of those moments you don’t know what he’s about to tell you,” Scott said during a phone interview on Friday afternoon. “He told us he was OK. He was just really fortunate to be alive. It was definitely just a scary moment for all of us.”

And Hopkins was relatively fine. Scott said the policeman told him Hopkins was knocked unconscious but would be OK. Scott said the tires on the receiver’s car were worn too thin and he happened to hit a wet patch on the road. It was raining that morning, he recalled.

The sad thing is that the NCAA to this day, despite all the NFL emphasis and rules and protocols established for concussed players, does not have nor follow a truly standardized protocol for return to play. And if they had had one, there would have been no way the a player that had been totally knocked unconscious would have been allowed to play that early.............whether the concussion was sustained on the field or otherwise.

No matter how one wants to look at it, this is Hopkins' SECOND significant concussion, and he thus carries a 2-4 times chance of sustaining a third.

Hopkins then went on to suffer a 3rd concussion on Sept 20 2015.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a cast for the second half, if not before then
