Updated Roster (Post-Draft)

Aboushi is an interesting prospect. Played OG and RT as an underclassmen at Virginia but was their starting LT his final few years. Was drafted in the 5th round by the Jets and has played primarily OG. Has graded out around average but was cleanly beaten out by Willie Colon for the Jets starting RG job this offseason. Was suspended Week 1 for violating substance abuse policy but has since been cleared to play. Still has 2 years left on his rookie contract.
He wasn't beaten out. He lined up with the starters during OTA's, was expected to fight for the starting job. Then I guess he told the coaching staff about the incident and from that point on they moved on from him. You don't let somebody fight for a starting job if he's about to be suspended for the first few games. That would be stupid. He wasn't in the running the moment the coaching staff knew about it and you can't blame them, it's business. But it would look silly to start Colon there in week 1 and then to kick him out out of the lineup again in week 2 once Aboushi returns. You do that for a guy like Marshal Yanda maybe, but not for some 2nd year player.

Every single report I saw this offseason concerning the Jets OG competition said this...

1) James Carpenter is the starting LG (no competition; handed the job as soon as he signed as a FA)
2) Aboushi, Colon, and Brian Winters would compete for the RG job

I have no idea what happened in camp because I was not there but every report I saw said that Colon won cleanly over Winters and that Aboushi was a distant third in that race. Maybe it has something to do with his suspension, maybe it has nothing to do. Maybe it has everything to do with it. I don't know. Just posting what I do know and what I do know is that every report I saw said Colon cleanly won the competition.

This makes no sense. Someone has to start. If someone is suspended then it obviously can't be him. Once he's eligible it's not silly at all for him to play again and for the fill-in to go to the bench.

Waived after coming off of suspension for Marijuana possession. This ought to make the ANTI CHOIR BOY CROWD happy.

Better OG than anybody not named Brooks currently on the roster. Because he played for Devlin he could probably step in Sunday and do a better job than Adams.

Very high on him. Watched him play last season, he's got Pro Bowl potential. He's a natural Guard who can kick outside and play RT in a pinch. Very athletic, great hand placement, really good in pass protection and run blocking in the second level. Psyched about this. Might as well even start him at LG this week.

I'm not really understanding where you get that he's athletic. He's the farthest thing from it. He's got huge hands and is indeed very effective in run blocking. But he has always been questionable as a pass protector both at OT and OG. For those expecting him to come in to take over LG.....wouldn't count on it. And, as has already been alluded to, has not done all that well in competition for the RG spot. He was losing out for the RG position, before the suspension.

Does claiming him on waivers maintain his rookie contract or will he have to sign a new one like players who clear waivers?

They tried to make a point and set an example by moving on from him. If you ask some Jets fans they'll tell you he was their best guard last season, all that while being thrown in the fire in the middle of the season when the other guard got hurt, who looked like complete crap. Aboushi took over and he played really well. Then this incident happens, they see his suspension coming so they remove him from the starting lineup and don't even let him compete for that job. They handed it to Colon instead who was terrible last year. Either way, I feel great about picking him up. I don't think he's a headcase or anything. People make mistakes, he's not a bad kid, just has to make smarter decisions.
That's what I'm hoping, but I thought I'd take the opportunity to appease the Bad Boy lovers.

He has one thing I like for a guard and that's having a long torso . He has a low hinge and can get under people .

And he's got something we're always looking for .............a mean streak.

Yup good nasty OL can go a long way to make an offense .

Adams is not a guard and XSF can't get on the field so if Oday Aboushi is not the answer and they can find a RT , Newton is a good guard . But maybe Aboushi can patch things up .

He played LG last year. Near the end of the year, he had a good PFF run blocking grading of +5.1 and a poor pass blocking grading of -6.7 link

Well fudgsicles , is Adams good at either ?

XSF has a calf issue ? I know they had a piece about him at OTAs saying how well he was doing and whooosh he's gone .

Yea he's a plodder. Not sure where he's getting "very athletic" from. His Combine numbers are all below average.

40-Time: 5.45
Vertical: 23.5
3-Cone: 7.92
Shuttle: 4.84

You should watch him play before making those general statements. You're completely wrong on pretty much everything.

Wow. These people that judge players based on their combine performances still exist. How about you watch him play before you label him as something he isn't. Or go ask some Jets fans about him, you don't even have to watch him play.

Treadwell was signed to the PS in place of Worthy. Texans didn't really make much effort to sign EZ back to the practice squad, doubt he returns to Houston.
With Karim Barton signed to the PS without being in camp, Treadwell with camp added to the PS and Aboushi being picked up on waivers, OL has certainly received the bulk of the attention.

Yeah...on hard knocks OB flat out told EZ that he couldn't run the full route tree and he should look for a team that would be able to better use his skill set.

I would love for y'all to sit down over a cup of coffee.

You might learn some things, if you are willing to listen.

I watched him play last year. I also have friends that are Jets fans who I speak about football often enough. His Combine numbers are not the basis of my comments. His LG play last year as a whole was at best adequate. His pass protection was not. Before the weed incident, he was practicing with the 3rd string players and listed as 3rd on the depth chart. It is reported that weed charges were dropped, but, in fact, he has been placed on a 1 year probation. Hopefully, he makes it through without landing on an extended suspension.

Maybe, a change of venue and coaching will further his skills and diminish his deficiencies. That is to be seen, although he will certainly get a fair chance here in light of the present shakey state of our LG position.

Seems like Rick knows the OL is a weakness and needs LG in the worst way and lacks depth in general. This is his attempt to rectify this situation. I think the Aboushi signing is a really good pickup at this date in the season. Aboushi may not be well rounded but he's above avg in the run game and that makes him an upgrade over Adams.

Aboushi's rating in pass blocking may be skewed. He was pass blocking for Geno who is notorius for holding on to the ball too long. That shoudn't be a problem with Mallett at QB. Atleast that's my hope.

Thanks. That's the last 70s number and I guess 13 is better for a receiver than 6.

13 was my number in HS, so I guess I'm a bit biased. Worthy probably weighs us much as I did, too...but much faster!

The reason I weighed in is because, to me anyway - and it looks like I'm not alone - a receiver with a single digit number looks ridiculous. I don't know why that particular esthetics looks unsightly to me. 11 does, too, for some reason.

They should bring back 00.

We're going to still have to deal with Adams at LG.:gun:

Now with the Texans, Aboushi, who was assigned No. 78, is intent on eventually earning a role as a starter.

“I came in here to compete and to win a starting job and to help the team win, do whatever I can to put the team in the best position to win,” Aboushi said. “Control what I can control, whatever reps I get at whatever position.”

For now, Aboushi is here to provide depth at guard behind starting right guard Brandon Brooks and left guard Jeff Adams, who’s also played tackle.

Devlin’s recommendation helped Aboushi get a roster spot with the Texans.

“Sure, anytime you’ve got a guy on your staff that’s coached that guy and been a part of that guy’s development, I think we always want to try to get that input and Mike gave us good input,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “He has a lot of respect for Oday and hopefully Oday can come in here and add depth and battle hard to play for us.”

Aboushi already has a good idea of what Devlin expects from his players.

“I was excited, Devlin drafted me and I had him for two years,” Aboushi said. “Coming in, being familiar with what he expects and the way he wants things done has put me a little bit ahead of the learning curve because I know what he expects as a player and I know what I need to do.”

What Aboushi has to do is play well and avoid any further brushes with the NFL substance-abuse policy.

Aboushi was pulled over in January in New Jersey with police discovering a small amount of marijuana during his car in a traffic stop. He received a conditional discharge of the misdemeanor marijuana citation.

Aboushi also has to learn the Texans’ system and playbook.

“I think the complication comes in the details and terminology,” Aboushi said. “I think for the base, for the most part, being under Devlin and kind of knowing his terms and the way he goes about things, so that’s a little familiar to me. I think it’s just a matter of picking up the details and how they want things done and how they want plays run.”

Aboushi’s last few days have been a whirlwind. He had to get ready in a hurry to come to Houston. He packed quickly and forgot a few key items, including socks.

“It happened quickly,” he said. “Texans claimed me, next thing you know I was on a flight, packed a bag with a bunch of things missing, and then booked it down to Texas. It’s a fast process, but it’s better that way.

“There’s not much time to really think about things. You kind of just get up, go on, and jump in the mix. I missed a whole bunch of stuff. I need to do some shopping.”

What a coincidence. That was my Peewee number too. Of course that was the ancient days when Guards could wear that number and play both ways. Oddly enough, that was also my grandfather's number who also played Guard in even more ancient days.

Bringing back 00 would have Kenney Burrough realing in his retirement,

He'll take his job within a couple weeks. He'll play this week and 1-2 weeks later he'll either challenge for the job or take that job. You don't sign somebody off waivers and then a day later go public saying he's your starter. Let him take that job, until then you play it down and act like all you added was depth. No need to throw Adams under the bus now by saying a day after picking up Aboushi that he'll be your starter. If he doesn't perform well you're left with nothing.

Also, here's a good example of what I meant. This 40 time stuff means nothing. You want quick feet and good vision from an athletic lineman: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000443916/Chris-Johnson-37-yard-run

This is a good young guard with tons of upside. A couple months from now we'll look back at this as a steal.

And you got all of this from my simple comment that we're going to still be stuck with Adams at LG? I know Aboushi is your man, but you might want to calm down.

Since I rout for the Laundry, I hope both Mallett and whoever starts plays flawless football. Then I hope that any backups are so good there is no drop off when they play. Then I hope the Coach calls a perfect game and the final score is 100+ - 0 with 600 passing yards and 400 running yards and negative yardage for the opposition.

That is all.

Oh, yes sir, that's why I mentioned 00 because of Kenny. I remember him well. I always thought he looked so cool with that number.

I have no idea why the NFL got rid of that number. Strange.

Very cool and the NFL should bring the nuber back.

But they wont because they want a cookie cutter league.

That happened long time ago when the NFL set up standardized numbers for jerseys in 1973, essentially making them all made up of positive numbers. The CFL still allows players to play with "0" and "00."
