Who else thinks the Texans are going to crash and burn in 2015

That is not how the Texans work. It isn't the GM in Draft Day traditional setup.
Google Rick Smith Houston Texans....Read his titles and what areas HE is in charge of...He is not just General Manager he is also "Executive Vice President"....If you think Obrien tells Smith what to do your either very young or very unfamiliar with how businesses work (including the football business).....Rick Smith IS IN CHARGE OF WHICH PLAYERS THE TEXANS AQUIRE....Research his titles & responsiblities.....see for yourself if you don't believe me

Ok - purely advice - don't come charging in here, not bother to read existing threads, start off in ignorance making sweeping generalizations about the MB and to this particular point go immediately to attacking anyone with another opinion.

Nobody is denying Smith's titles. This has been discussed around here forever. But they don't mean the same thing at all companies or teams. There is plenty of evidence the Texans at various times have ceded some of the traditional GM authority to the HC. Both Kubiak and OB have had final control of the 53. Kubiak picked the players in 2006 - we know this because after the draft Kubiak said about taking Owen Daniels "that he let Casserly convince him to take OD." More recently it has repeatedly been reported they use a boardroom approach where 90% of the time Smith and the HC agree on the pick but where they don't McNair breaks the tie - not Smith as GM gets his way.

Yep and this way Smith can never be blamed for anything that goes wrong within the Texans org. I do believe he handles contracts and he has constantly mismanaged the cap during the Kubiak yrs, in addition to doing some terrible contract extentions. It seems like he has learned his lessons since BOB has come on board. There haven't been any Schaub/Cushing etc... type extentions.

Know you know why this organization is a dumpster fire....a group of warm fuzzy guys without a backbone or a set of balls to take charge....Thank you for making my point

So the Texans are a dumpster fire before the 1st game ? Hmmm ... ok who did the Texans not pick that make you feel like a jilted lover ?

I doubt that played any role in how they do things but it does result in greater uncertainty on some issues.

Not agreeing with specifics but yes I think we do know Smith is primarily responsible for scouting and contracts (extensions, structures etc).

Nope I do not and you want to know why ? I've been watching the NFL since 1968 and I've seen plenty of dumpster fires and this isn't one of them .

If we keep paying for mediocricy and accepting it (buying tickets, jerseys, over priced burgers & beer etc)....guess what we'll keep getting.....More Mediocricy!!!.....Now I'm guessing your next question will be....If I'm so smart then what's the solution?.....Stop Paying For Mediocricy!!!

You don't think people were buying tickets, jerseys, over priced burgers & beer while Capers, Casserly and Kubiak were here?

How long did it take New Orleans to win their 3rd playoff game? Pittsburgh? New England? Go ahead and make us a list of all 32 teams... your assignment for the day

Rick Smith is Obriens boss... He can draft whoever he wants to draft....Obrien ( nor any other coach) tells Rick Smith what to do....he has the authority to draft any player he believes will help the team....If your a manager where you work, do the people you manage tell you what to do or do you tell them what to do....I was self employed for over 30 yrs & I always ask my employees for their input and listened....but the decision was mine....and they had to accept it or go work somewhere else....that's how all businesses work[/QUOTE

Just because you are a GM of a professional football team, does not mean you have final say over who is drafted. Any that do have final say, better draft who the coach wants - or there will be serious repercussions happening later if not already and one of the 2 is about to loose their job. Only exception would be Jerry Jones - he is just too dumb to realize that he needs to fire his GM.

The word you're looking for is "mediocrity". I'd seriously rethink drinking before posting, you're spouting off the same talking points that have been going around this board for years. I understand you just found sports talk radio and want to parrot their talking points, but it's all been discussed before and you're adding zero to the conversation.

Texans Win / Loss Record: 90 wins & 122 loses....Break that down & on average we win 4 out of 10 games. Are you good with that? Does that make you optimistic year after year? Don't you see that we (the fans) hold the power & the key to having a playoff contending team.....If the stadium seat ticket sales were 4 seats sold for every 10 seats for just 1 season don't you think that would have a serious impact & send a clear message to the men that own & run this organization?

Goddamn you have no idea how this works. If Houston boycotts NFL games it won't result in a championship team from Houston. It will result in a team in an other city.

My word and your word mean the same thing....look it up & take your AD medicine...I'm adding a factual reality to the MB: 90 wins & 122 loses....That's 4 wins out of every 10 games (on average)...So do you want to keep talking about: Oh golly this is gonna be our year guys, I can just feel it!!! Or do you want to look at the "facts" & have a real discussion? Take your pick....(buy some more tickets & jerseys to prove your loyalty to mediocricy)....have fun

Oh my god!!!....We're being held hostage!! By the Texans owner!!...We better just keep paying for mediocricy or else....or else he'll move our team!! And we will lose our privilege to keep paying for mediocracy. Think about what your saying and what you believe......Your Not A Powerless

I'm so sorry for all the typos I've made on this forum and I'll strive from here on to proof read all my post by checking my spelling, punctuation, & grammar. Because that's what's most important on this MB. So help me god. Amen.....

Why are you even here? You hate this team so much and the way it is run. Why don't you go join a MB of a team that you consider well run?

Here we go with the "Your Not A Real Fan!! Like Me!! So just go away.
How about this for a "fair" solution to everything. The Texans win loss record (averaged over 13 yrs) is 4 wins out of every 10 games. Why don't we buy tickets for 4 out of every 10 seats in the stadium.....Don't you think that is a truly "fair" deal for the fans? And don't you think this would be a huge embarrassment for the owner & management to have the media pointing this out during every televised game? Don't you see that the fans aren't powerless? Example: if you keep giving me $10 everyday & I keep giving you $4 back every day and we do this for 13 yrs straight then I'm going to to keep taking this deal till you stop giving it to me....LOL!!!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NFL_franchise_post-season_droughts

I can't copy the section in the article - but we are not even close to a lot of teams droughts.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the info on number of years.

As a fan I would hope the Texans would try to not emulate those franchises. However with Smith's draft record he seems to be doing his part to bring the Texans org down to that level. (Going on 2 HC's now.) I wish McNair would just turn the entire personnel dept over to Gaine and let him run with it. You cant do much worse than Smith has done over the last 3 yrs. Who are those 2nd/3rd rd picks and why aren't they on the field/team?

Yeah sure, because nobody was entertained during a loss right? I wonder if you are as critical about your own life decisions as you are Uncle Bob's. I can't help but wonder those who are so religiously critical of others are a complete mess in their own lives so they feel the need to be critical of others?

It's a crying shame someone as wise and experienced as you on how to run an NFL football team will never get the opportunity to prove it. I am sure you would take the NFL by storm.

Know exactly what you mean. Rick is the ultimate Teflon, head bobing, split down the middle, moderate risk taking, avoiding accountability General Manager you could ask for all neatly wrapped up in a pretty package swinging his oversized big Bertha around people's heads :hobie:

First there is not a a bigger fan based in reality than myself. I've been beating that drum for the last 4 years and I've been mostly right. I too have made a lot people angry with me because of it. Now there are a lot of kool aid drinking fans here who believe that the Texans front office can do no wrong and believe every word they say. I know I used to be one. Today is their day, start of the season. You and I should take our leave from Texans Talk and let them enjoy their parade. I always do and will today also. I'll return when it is apparent that another season is lost. I'll be mostly in the college/draft section until then.

On to Rick, your wrong about Rick Smith. Smith is a GM in name only. Smith came from Denver where he was an Asst. GM and the actual role he plays today for the Texans. You like reality that's the reality of the situation today. How do I know? I have followed every move, read every article, watched every interview and press conference. You can watch many of those, they are archived in Texans website. Smith came to Houston via Kubiak's recommendation to do in Houston what he was doing in Denver, be an assistant General Manager.

If you were attentive to the situation you would know that Smith reorganized, fired and replaced many in the College and Pro Scouting departments. There are news articles detailing this. If you read and watched every post draft interview you would know that Smith orchestrates the draft but doesn't pick the players. You would know that Alex Gibbs made the decision to draft Duane Brown but Smith advised that they could trade back in RD 1 and still get him. You would also know that Frank Bush was responsible for drafting Cushing and Wade for drafting JJ Watt and Mercilus. You would know that Kubiak promised Gibbs everything he needed to take the job because at the Time the Texans running game was abysmal. You would also know that Bob McNair promised Wade first RD picks to take the coordinator job to fix the abysmal defense. You would know that O'Brien/Crennel drafted Louis Nix and Smith advised they needed to move up to be sure.

Over the years after reading and watching all things Texans you would know that Cal and Rick became BFFs. When Andre Johnson held out and Smith made a mess of things you saw how Bob McNair put Smith on the sidelines and handled the Andre situation himself. The decisions on early and extended contracts, were Bob McNair decisions, Rick was just carrying out what McNair had decided. The years of re-negotiated contracts and living in salary cap hell were all Bob McNair decisions, Smith was just carrying out orders. You knew this because you'd heard McNair say earlier, "we have the money and we're going to spend it."

Like Kubiak, O'Brien has final say on player personnel. What that means is the Texans head coach makes the decision on all player transactions on who gets signed and who doesn't. Rick Smith's official title is Exec VP, GM and Cal's BFF, in REALITY his true job description is ASSISTANT General Manager. So now you want to know who is the real GM? Bob McNair, of course. That's why McNair goes to the office early every day, 10 to 12 hours a day. What do you think McNair does all day long? Twiddle his thumbs or engages staff in a game of tiddly winks?

Thanks for this, very helpful and convincing. I was going to head to the stadium in 30 mins, but now 60% of me is going to stay home and do some yard work.

Just curious Phoenix, how many season tickets are you going to give up this year to achieve your goals?

Why don't we all just leave it at this: There are some fans who will keep paying full price for half baked Cake (buying tickets, jerseys, concessions etc) I respect your freedom of choice.......And there are some fans who are just sick of paying full price for half baked cake ( so we will watch the games at home, stop buying jerseys, concessions etc) When and if we see that the cooks are selling fully baked cakes then we'll start buying cake again. Can the first group of fans I referred to here respect our freedom of choice Too??

Your choice go for it.

As for the rest of us i guess it's half baked cake, over priced beer, and the continued feeling of success at mediocrity since that is all we know.

But my team does not constantly have to win to have my support, i fully support this team for what it represents which is more than just the Football played on Sundays. It represents a community, it represents my dad RIP who loved the texans. I love this team based on more than Wins and Loses.

Actually the point is that changes have shown to be made without people needing to boycott.

Not to mention Boycotts do not work when only a select few do it. You need a massive amount of population/fans to do it. Otherwise no one besides you will even know your doing it.

Here we go with the "Your Not A Real Fan!! Like Me!! So just go away.

I never said you were not a real fan.

With all you have posted it just seems like you really, really hate the Texans. Why be here then? I hate the Cowgirls but I would never go to their boards and talk hate about them to their fans. That is their domain.

I do not spend my coins on tickets to the game, I simply cannot afford them. But I do have Texans flags on my truck today and my Texan's t-shirt on.

The choice is mine to be a fan, even an optimistic fan. The choice is the Texans as to what kind of team they field and what players they decided to keep or let go or how to run their business. I don't have to like it or agree with it. But I am not going to get angry over everything they do that I do not like or agree upon.

The choice is yours to hate on the Texans. I just don't understand why - with all that hate - you continue to be a fan.

Chill out, relax, enjoy the game and team for what it is - entertainment.

Just curious Phoenix, how many season tickets are you going to give up this year to achieve your goals?

It's been my experience that Texan fans don't boycott going to the game they boycott going into the stadium . I went to a MNF game vs the Chiefs in the early 2000s . The fans were late getting into the stadium and with 4 secs to go in the half Carr threw a pick 6 . 80% of the stadium emptied and went back to the tailgate . That's how they protest and it gets uglier than that see Schaub vs Raiders .

"Mediocricy" is not a word, no matter how many times you use it. You're good at this trolling thing, you almost had me. Oh god, so good.

Boycotting will do nothing except see another team move out of Houston. Perhaps you forget what it feels like not to have an NFL franchise in Houston.

If you're really committed, stop watching the game - TV is where they make their money; in game is a pittance.

Personally going to games is not just about the W. I can get that from the newspaper the next day. As someone above said, some of my best times have been in loses. For example the OT loss against the Ravens was an epic game. Watching our team come back at the longest of odds, with 95 and 99 yd drives and a 2 pt conversion to even be in OT goes down in my fondest memories book.

To each their own. I'm not going to try to sell you tickets and I doubt anyone else does. How about not treating everyone who doesn't want to join your boycott as ignorant jackasses?

Like Kubiak, O'Brien has final say on player personnel. What that means is the Texans head coach makes the decision on all player transactions on who gets signed and who doesn't. Rick Smith's official title is Exec VP, GM and Cal's BFF, in REALITY his true job description is ASSISTANT General Manager. So now you want to know who is the real GM? Bob McNair, of course. That's why McNair goes to the office early every day, 10 to 12 hours a day. What do you think McNair does all day long? Twiddle his thumbs or engages staff in a game of tiddly winks?
Great post and must read for anyone who cares about this damn team.
