Report: Brian Hoyer to be named Texans starting QB

jumping-out-of-window.gif

Legitimate or not, others are likely to follow................

Not surprised. Always felt it was his to lose. He either had to play his way out of the gig, or Mallett had to be clearly and completely beyond him. Mallett missed an opportunity here, but I still will not concede that they went into OTA's or TC as 50-50 odds.

Going glass totally half-empty here:

With Hoyer under center, RB by committee, non-existent TE's and only 1 of the top 5 WR's having actually played a real game for the Texans, how does this "system" look any different than what Cleveland had last year?

Holy crap, we have Cleveland's offense...

I'm not surprised - even though before Saturday night's game, I predicted OB would be naming Mallett as starting QB. I also predicted Mallett would have a "pretty good" game on Saturday, and when it turned out I was wrong about that, I figured I'd also be wrong about Mallett as starter.

I will say that I think the chances that Mallett will starts for the Texans at some point in 2015 are very high, and if for some reason he doesn't, that's probably means good things are happening for the Texans.

With AJ gone and Foster on the shelf with injury, and Hoyer as the field general,
this season is shaping up to be one of the "forgettable ones"

Well, another year of could 'ah would 'ah and should 'ah starting right up. Grab your beer or whatever illegal substance you can, you'll need it for this season.

Hackenberg? isn't that what the Titanic did right before it sunk?

I hope this season isn't that much of a failure..

McGloin is probably in our future given BoB's propensity to go
after guys he knows..

Glass half full:

OB did coach up Fitz to a career year. The defense might score a lot of points. Fat Randy is going Pro Bowl.

The QB competition must've been 99.89% practice. I'm not a coach, but there's no way these preseason games have helped any so-called "competition".

Meh, once again, the defense will garner most of my attention. Maybe a bit of the oline too. I dig watching the LOS battle

Aaron Wilson @AaronWilson_NFL
Edge for Brian Hoyer comes down to experience, consistency, decision-making, less practice interceptions, gut feeling

Ryan Mallett did some good things in camp and preseason games, but ultimately not enough to unseat Brian Hoyer, who got the job

Encouraging development for the future is third quarterback Tom Savage making some strides, they'll keep grooming him for the future

FWIW I think Hoyer and Mallett are both better options than Fitzpatrick. Just know there are plenty disappointed with the decision.

Stephanie Stradley @StephStradley
I agree. It would be helpful to have a healthy Foster but #Texans offense as a whole looked better in '15 v '14 camp

Adam Caplan @caplannfl
On Hoyer decision, my understanding is that he was the most consistent of the 2 QBs from practice to practice.

John McClain @McClain_on_NFL
Here's the way I look at it: OB won 9 games using 4 QBs, starting 3 last year. If he wants Hoyer now, I'm giving him benefit of the doubt.

I agree it was Hoyer's to lose the entire time and he didn't do anything to lose it, and Mallet didn't do enough to win it. If he can avoid making a lot of mistakes and play just average football I still say we can have a winning season.

Hope we go to the playoffs with Hoyer, but I'm not betting on it.
lol

Here's to a good season from him and the Texans.
:koolaid:

And now all that's left to do is sit back, grab a beer, and pray for a goddamn miracle to happen.

No problem. We got this. Gonna need more beer though.

"NEXT BEER UP!"

Hoyer's not as bad as people think..Cleveland was very much in contention last year up to about week 12 and he's got a better team around him with the Texans and less distractions (Manziel mania) than in his last year in Cleveland.

I'm not predicting pro bowl or anything for him, but I could easily see a 2008-2011 Alex Smith or Matt Cassel season for him, which would be great for us if our defense plays the way I think we're gonna play.

Brian Hoyer. Brian ******* Hoyer. ****! ****! ****! ****! ****iddy-****-****-****!

Well. This is not a Brian Hoyer talk-me-off-the-ledge moment. It's a "Damn! I know what Brian Hoyer is and now OB has told us all that Mallet is (in his estimation) no better than what Brian Hoyer is so.... We got nothing." moment. Not a thing.

****!

Well way to ruin my ******* Monday, thanks BOB. Atleast i still have The Walking Dead and now Fear the Walking Dead.

Fitz 2.0. 'Career' year, weekly arguments about game manager, survive on D most of the time but get crushed with an inability to play in makeup mode, calls for either of the big armed backups, rinse repeat...'real' QB competition again next year.

It's depressing. "The Walking Dead" could be used to describe this franchise or at least the progress we're making toward finding a quality signal caller.

I love O"brien but I can not, WILL NOT root for Brian Hoyer. Mallett at least had some mystery about him but Hoyer is what he is.

A crappy, weak armed, former Browns QB

They didn't distinguish themselves during preseason games, which consisted of a handful of series. More skeptical than ever since the decision was evidently based on practices.

Practice?...............It's just practice!..........I mean, it's practice!..............

Mr. McNair said we can win without a "super quarterback". All we need is a game manager. Heck, Trent Dilfer won the SB 15 yrs ago (& was cut immediately after). At least we are consistent. We have never had an excellent quarterback. Who needs one? We have the guy Cleveland threw away for Josh McCown & Johnny Football. Maybe he will turn into Kurt Warner. Hip Hip Hooray.

Looks like Fall is shaping up to be:

Astros playoff games
Rockets games
Binge watching breaking bad again
Finishing house of cards

Texans will be outta the race by the bye.

Mallet's "unorthodox" bench press technique appears to be the most regrettable decision of his career. He had the job.

If I have to be disappointed in someone, it's Mallet. I don't like Hoyer anymore than anyone else. But Mallet, for some reason, couldn't throw the ball downfield. He had his chance . . . and he blew it.
Maybe it was the play-call that prevented throwing downfield?

Anywho, these preseason games didn't prove jack squat. This competition never made it out of practice. I mean, Mallett was given two friggin series with the ones. The previous week Hoyer had one series. This "competition" was over in practice.

Didn't I tell you Savage wouldn't be named due to OB's prejudice in favor of the other 2? Woe betide us! So much for this season. If it's bad enough, we might be in a position to draft a franchise QB. But will we do that?

Mallett is kicking his own ass for not joining the Afterburners.

Something about the 5 o'clock shadow and those eyes in this picture on the Chronic gives me "I shall call him..... Mini-Schaub!" thoughts.

He'll throw just as many interceptions as Matt Schaub..... while being only 1/8th his size.

My prediction is before the end of the season there is a complaint about his squeaky yankee voice.

IMHO, both guys were given the chance.

One has to consider that OB had had plenty of time evaluating the two from the days with the Patriots.

He liked Mallett enough to have him back with a pretty good contract.

Personally, I had stated last year that I preferred Hoyer over Fitz.
He's no franchise QB, but I believed the Texans would have done better than 9-7 with him last year.

Mallett will just have to be patient and learn to be more consistent.
One never knows when a situation like McNabb/Garcia will happen.

Heck, even Yates got a chance.
