PRO DAY RESULTS
60-yard shuttle: 11.91 seconds

STRENGTHS Works hard in routes to get defender leaning before break. Gets open and makes himself presentable when play breaks down. Motivated self-starter and team leader. Scouting community and coaching staff effusive about his personal character. Competitive run blocker who understands positioning and is willing to land a blow on safeties in space.

WEAKNESSES Twitch just isn't there. Saw playing time diminish over last two years. Struggles to get separation down the field and is forced to make contested catches. Slow into his break and drifts a bit after opening up rather than working back to the ball when necessary. Lacks body control necessary for extended catch radius.

BOTTOM LINE Mumphery is a hardworking leader and the kind of guy every college coach wants on his team, but his lack of athleticism and overall speed will make him a long shot to find a home on an NFL roster.

Summation on Mumphery:

Opportunity to be a better pro than collegiate player. Great tracking the ball, great hands. Good route runner. Unbreakable concentration. Enough speed to get over the top. Tightly contested balls will NOT be an issue. I classified Keith Mumphery as a possession WR that could be a 10 year starter. I had a fringe 5th/6th round grade on him Got w/ 5th comp pick

Keith Mumphery
6'0 - 215
31 1/8" arm
9 1/8" hands
32.5" vert
4.54 - 40yd
1.63 - 10 yd split
Pro scout's take on Mumphery...
Three-year starter at the Z or flanker position from Vienna Georgia. Looks like a slot guy who can get off the line quickly. Good open field moves with quick and strong hands. Doesn't always catch the ball cleanly in his hands, but he does catch it. Has courage to go over the middle on dig routes and take a hit. Strong run after catch ability. A clutch receiver who makes the key third-down catch to keep the chains moving. Strong enough to slip or break tackles. Takes pride in his downfield blocking. He is not opposed to blocking and cleaning up safeties. A power player who is a possession type receiver that can make the contest to catch. Will have to make a roster by being a standout on special-teams coverage.

He says he did not have a draftable grade on Mumphery but he is a high character guy. Great person.

Not sure what to think on this one.

Huh... Okay then. Well I hoped for Tre McBride, but whatever floats your boat. this draft is a complete 180 from last year, not feeling any of these picks. Hopefully that means I'm wrong and they're all pro bowlers.

Nobody else thinking he might have been picked primarilz for special teams? Shilo Keo replacement? High character, team leader, willing to do the dirty work...

Didn't really scout this guy ..

Wondering why Tre McBride is still on the board this deep. If I was looking at WR's , he'd have been on my radar this far down , small school or not.

Why this guy instead of someone like Ty Montgomery or Antwan Goodley?

what is with rick smith's obsession with undersized and SLOW wide receivers???????

we need a burner damnit!!!
Yeah, i understand that there are those that overstate the importance of the 40 time & the folly in such thinking, but to totally ignore it isn't any more "right"

This one is a head scratcher. Not sure what to think other than I hope he's a ST standout.
I don't see how he doesn't have the quick twitch reflexes to be a punt returner & he isn't fast enough to be a gunner. Unless he has mad skilz staying in front of gunners, I don't see him contributing much to special teas either.

This draft should end the Rick Smith era!
I hope this is sarcasm. If not, you are way overreacting over a freakin' fifth round pick. Johnson, McKinney, and Strong were all great picks for the first two days. I think Smith is doing a helluva job so far.

When I first heard WR I was thinking returner which would be great, but this guy doesn't seem to have return ability in his past. It's a bit of a head scratcher at this point. Based on what I hear/see/read, ST is this guy's best and really only shot to make the final 53. He will need to kill it on ST. Could be a David Anderson type that claws a career out of nothing by being a chain mover.

Other than that, I'm lost on this one as I don't know the guy at all.

How much are the Texans paying you to say that? Rick Smith deserves all the blame for the state of our team. Even successful picks under his watch were not of his doing. Remember, JJ Watt was Wade's pick and the first 2 rounds of this year's raft have RAC's hands all over it.

Thanks for not making me feel better TK!

I guess I can look at it this way doubt he's able to push past 5th best receiver on the team and can drop Martin off the roster. My bigger problem is value at this point. Could still use help at OL or OLB.

and our defense done well once they learned the defensive playbook, especially being number 1 in the league on takeaways

Phil Kessel: Nice Guy. Tries Hard.
Redskins took the blocking/ST receiver that I wanted (Evan Spencer).

Its a 5th round pick, so it is hard to get worked up about it, but I really dislike this (Mumphery) pick. Hell, I had no idea who this guy was, and I watched a fair bit of Michigan State. JAG at the college level, won't do anything in the NFL. I would be really surprised to see him make the roster.

Definitely would not be shocked to see a UDFA receiver come in here and make the team over him.

Yes he should take the "blame for the state of our team" that being for a 9-7 team on the rise. I'm neutral on Rick Smith (I just believe that he is told what the coaches want and he finds them) but I don't understand some of you. How are you going judge a draft this soon? Last year people were touting the draft as one of the best we've had and by mid season people felt the opposite. I'm done. Some of yall seem like you are clinically insane.

The Houston Texans worked out running back/wide receiver Keith Mumphery of Michigan State.

The Houston Texans have sent running back coach Charles London to Michigan State's pro-day and, according to reports, they are working out Keith Mumphery, who plays both running back and wide receiver. Mumphery had a private workout with the Texans on Tuesday, adding another name to a growing list of prospects.

Mumphery is 6'0" and 215 lbs., and was an NFL Combine participant. He was a three-year letter winner where he had 88 receptions for 1,348 yards and seven touchdowns in 54 career games. He also had 14 carries for 125 yards and one touchdown.

Mumphery was a 2015 East-West Shrine Game participant.

The Texans sent their position coach to Michigan to work him out after attending the Spartans PD, so sounds like they view him atleast as much as a back as receiver. Depth at 2 positions. Billy loves versatility.
He was good enough to play in post-season all-star game (E-W), and got a combine invite.

Mumphery's a very good blocker. He isn't afraid to mix it up that's for sure. Tough to bring down when he gets moving with the ball. Just about every catch I've seen him make looks like a chore though. He's a project as a receiver - probably has more upside as a running back. Seriously think he would have been available as an UDFA. Don't understand this pick.

Multi-dimensional, character guy, competes - in-line with what I expect from an O'Brien draft. In any organization, you need leaders and those that are able to follow.

I admit I have no idea who this guy is, but I'm liking what I'm reading.

Possession type guy that can make the tough catches in the middle of the field and take a hit. A guy that is good at moving the chains. Strong blocker and versatile enough to lineup anywhere on the field. I'm also thinking he'll be a solid STs player.

You get ST players from UDFA and NOT FROM THE DRAFT.
You do realize just about everyone that doesn't start is an ST player. Sorry to burst your bubble, but just about everyone we have drafted so far this year will most likely see their first snaps as ST players. And lately, we are annually one of the worst ST teams in the NFL, so I do hope they are drafting players with STs in mind.

maybe we can call him a full back & force mismatches motioning him out of the backfield.

Agreed. And over a 5th round pick.

some of these knees jerk so fast it's a wonder they still have intact knee ligments

Hopefully he can beat out Keyshawn Martin and Demaris Johnson, that is what I think the Front office and the coaches are all hoping deep inside.
There's also Cecil Shorts, Nate Washington, Alan Bonnor, Travis Labhart and Uzoma Nwachukwu. My problem with the pick is that it should have been used for a position of higher need such as depth for the OL.

I'm not super high on this pick but only because there were guys available that I like more.

I do like Mumphrey and he should be able to beat out Martin in the slot. I don't think he'll return kicks but he'll play his ass off on ST and do the dirty work that a slot needs to do.

I don't think he has a really high ceiling but I do think he can come in and be better than the guys we have.
