Texans vs. Bengals injury report

CloakNNNdagger

Hall of Fame
The official Texans Injury Report is not out yet.

But I've tried to put together the Bengals Injury Status for today.

Bernard, Giovani HB Hip/Clavicle LP missed 3 previous games and did not practice all last week for a hip problem

Burfict, Vontaze LB Knee DNP last week, did not even see the rehab field because he has yet to be on the rehab field since his Oct. 29 arthroscopic surgery

Gilberry, Wallace
DE Back DNP JJ's mental "push back" to Gillberry's big mouth had him so bent out of shape that it injured his back....and he couldn't even practice

Hunt, Margus DE Ankle DNP sustain ankle sprain and was carried off on cart this past game

Newman, Terence CB Knee DNP sustained an injury week 10 and still did not practice all last week

Peerman, Cedric HB Hip LP 3rd backup RB

Smith, Andre OT Ankle FP starting RT missed 2 last 2 games and will be slowed down

Zeitler, Kevin G Calf LP starting RG had already missed 3 games for a calf tear.....then re-injured it 3 weeks ago and missed another game.......an injury waiting to happen

Looks like the right side of the Bengals OL will be less than 100% if they play at all. This will be Watt's new playground. Missing Burfict (The leader of the defense) and Newman should give the Texans offense a big advantage.

How effective do you think the Texans limited participation guys will be? Clowney in particular?

JJo will probably play essentially unchanged as reflected last game.

Without proving full practice including contact, I feel Foster's risk of reinjury increases significantly.

It would not be surprising for Cushing's knee to flare now that he does not have 2 weeks of almost total rest to recover.

If Akeem Dent as an LB can't take full contact tomorrow, it is more likely that Dent falls into the "Questionable" category for Sunday.

I don't believe Clowney should have been put into the Titans game.........should have been rested through the Bye. The 2 week rest probably has allowed him to make up for most of that. If there is no flare of his symptoms this week after last game, I anticipate that we see a steady improvement in his performance. If he continues to be "Limited," I suspect that his performance next week will be blunted more by his lack of much needed "Full" practice as a rookie.

Although they are not listed in the Bengals' Injury Report, I will be watching 2 players..........AJ Green and Leon Hall. Green's only decent game in a long while was last week, after missing 3 games (turf toe) followed by 2 poor performance games.........have to ask if the last game was a fluke, and he will see the re-emergence of the effects of his turf toe. Leon Hall has had 2 ruptured Achilles tendon repairs, the left in 2011, the right in mid Oct 2013..........he has not been able to regain adequate status...........PFF rates him now at 48 out of 57 for slot receivers and 60 out of 105 all corners. Soreness to one of Hall's Achilles brought him out of Sunday's game which led to Dennard coming into the game. Which reminds me, Denard had bilateral sports hernia repairs in college, and now has been plagued by hamstring and HIP problems this season (remember the study I presented in the Clowney discussions identifying the relationship in 86% of sports hernia patients to a hip problem?). If he plays I would make him a target.

is Mallett's issue a bruise or muscle tear? Does it impact distance throws? Hopefully Terrence is out. Also, I thought I heard Foster was on practice field today? Hopefully, Blue's performance boosts Arian's return.

I don't know if I'd read too much into Green's first two games back. The first one, he only played a little more than 50% of the offensive snaps, and the second one was the TNF game in which Dalton posted a passer rating of 2.0, and the entire Bengals team had less than 100 yards receiving. Green's played approx. 90% of the offensive snaps the last two games, and I think he's gonna be a handful to deal with. In the past, he has shown that he can be handled by the top-level CB's, so it may have as much to do with how healthy J-Jo is as how Green's feeling.

Cincy's clearly got health issues on both sides of the ball (Bernard, Burfect, O-line), but I'm thinking Green isn't at the top of that list of issues.

is Mallett's issue a bruise or muscle tear? Does it impact distance throws? Hopefully Terrence is out. Also, I thought I heard Foster was on practice field today? Hopefully, Blue's performance boosts Arian's return.

I think it's just OB questioning his heart and leadership to get him pumped up for the game.

:kitten:

Or it's a variation of the Tom Brady Shoulder.

We aren't given any specifics on Mallet.............how and if it effects his performance depends on is it muscle strain, muscle or bone (rib is part of chest) bruise........left or right side of chest?? The only scenario I see truly affecting his performance would be a significant pectoralis major muscle tear on his right (throwing) side......and you would have expected to have seen some signs of that before the last game's end.........which I saw no evidence of.

You may be correct. But turf toe is typically a season long affliction, with exacerbation with increased work load over time. It'll be interesting how he fares on Sunday.

Green has already said there is no way he will be back to 100% at any time this season.
However, his less than 100% looked pretty good against the Saints last week.
Dalton having a his 1PM game time appearance helped greatly.

Green can be handled by top end CB's that get help from the safety.
Put him one on one and he wins the majority of those situations.

For those that don't know, that initial list contains 5 Bengal starters.
3 offense and 2 defense. Talk about testing the "next man up" thought process !!!

Gilberry, Hunt, and Peerman are all backups that see snaps throughout the game.

I was wondering about lechler. His punts didn't seem too boom off his leg (maybe the weather?)

I thought someone made a comment in the game day thread about maybe his hip might be bothering him??????

It was I who made several of those comments during this past game day thread AND previous games. His hang time and trajectory have both taken a change to the worse.

Bernard had a Full practice today.......although a report has him expected to split running assignment down the middle with Hill,......expect Hill to carry more of the load. Burfict didn't practice today.........I'd count him OUT for Sunday. Newman wasn't there either.........expect same fate for him.

BTW, there was a question as to what has been Bernard's major problem. It is Bernard's hip that actually kept him out of the 3 games, not his clavicle. As per a discussion with one of our MB members, I related that it didn't sound like a fractured clavicle as reason for "clavicle" classification........as I contemplated, it turns out it is indeed a clever disguise for a shoulder injury (an injury to one or more of the ligaments that hold your clavicle (collarbone) to your shoulder blade).:winky:

ans7_shoulderseparation.jpg

Must have been mild......but, as with a hip, it can easily be re-injured when thrown into real game play.

As I've said before......not surprising. A groin tear (especially for an RB) can be a kiss of death). As hard as it is to come back from hamstring and calf tears, they're a piece of cake compared to a significant groin tear (and all signs are that Foster has a Grade II tear probably of the adductor). You see the adductor is involved in stabilizing the leg whether running, stopping, cutting, jumping or pushing off or accelerating.........and maintaining balance, even when simply standing. If he's thrown out there without proving himself in full contact practices, his chance of re-aggravating the groin is extremely high..........and even with that lesser challenge of full practices, when he goes into a real game situation, his risk of re-injury remains quite high. If Foster suffers a significant setback for whatever reason, give him some pom poms and a comfortable bench.........because that is as much as his activity level will probably allow him for the rest of the season.

The Texans Injury Report has not changed today from yesterday's.......except for the above practice status change for Foster.

The Bengals' official Thursday Injury Report (as opposed to early report) lists Newman as "limited."

Some coach speak from Brian Smith:

“It’s something that we’re going to have to see right up until game time,” O’Brien said Thursday at NRG Stadium. “No setback. Just it really is, from one day to the next, just see how he’s doing and I’m sure we’ll have to make a decision on game day. It’s just something that we’ve got to wait it out and see if it gets better

He practices Wednesday limited, then doesn't today........and it's not a setback.........see if it gets better.....????? :kitten:

If this VIDEO posted by HT.com is representative of Foster's Wednesday practice........it's laughable. If it isn't representative........then why would you post it?

A shot of Foster at Wednesday's practice in shorts and wearing a TINTED VISOR.

B21Sj9fIcAAMciF.jpg:large

I began asking myself, why the mask out of the clear blue?........and the reason that makes most sense to me is the condition of PHOTOSENSITIVITY........and, in my opinion, the most likely cause of this "acute" condition in his case is the use or overuse of NONSTEROIDAL ANTIINFLAMMATORY DRUGS such as ibuprofen, naproxen, indomethacin, and phenylbutazone. Steroid injections such as used (inadvisably) in cases of tendon and muscle tears can create the same picture.

Of course, another possible cause is estrogen therapy.......which I have ruled out.............or Viagra.......which I haven't........:tiphat:

From that picture, the mask doesn't look particularly tinted to me. Are you sure that's not just the reflectivity of clear mask?

our starting runningback has missed 2 games, and his backup had 150 yards in one of those. that's the extent of our major offensive injuries. our defense has been fantastic inspite of a multitude of 'hurts' across the formation - cushing and clowney's limitations being the only real note. it took this post to make me realize how ridiculously healthy we've been. and how incredibly peeved it makes me to realize that fact, we should have 8 wins on health alone.

our health. the breaks we get each week. the talent we have. the gift-wrapped schedule. we've been granted 8 wins already this year ...

my disdain for o'brien grows each day. how craptastic does an offense and scheme have to be to have our talent and health and schedule - and barely reach .500 .... with a defense that's on pace to have the first league MVP in 20+ years? while leading the league in turnovers? holy damn! i get the firing of kubiak, he (through no fault of his own) lost the locker room and had to go ... but could you image his work with the way this year has gone? we'd be a comfortable 8-2 even with shitzpatrick ... with only the giants, cowboys and colts being real competition. i'm going full ron simmons ... DAMN!

I don't envision this going over well.

But I will add! You are wrong.

Kubiak went 2-14 with the same squad.

Kubiak went 2-14 with the same squad.

kubiak went 12-4 with the same (or lesser) squad before a stack of impossibilities and management interference happened. obviously i need to use a different name such as harbaugh or shanahan or gruden just to keep preconceived notions from taking over.

my point is that we've got a **** ton of talent all over the field. we have a roster health that hasnt been seen in our 12 years. line, tight ends, receivers (if you sub 13 for 11), and backfield are all solid. d-line is great. linebackers have legit talent and depth with cushing in on early downs. corners are great. safeties are solid (minus "swag"). defensive coaches are doing their jobs and more, especially the lone survivor in bill 'badass' kollar. even special teams is fantastic.

if we had an offensive minded coach who could turn lead into gold ... no, turn gold into platinum ... in this prime situation we'd be running away with the division. instead we have followed former fail teams and grabbed the latest belichick dud with no experience and his 'who?' tree. to argue is futile ... we're all sipping the koolaid, and doing so with a roster that doesn't have a single new imprint. even daniel manning is back. lesser coaches, lesser system, and a similarly junk quarterback ... otherwise the same starting lineup but without the 1 in a million impossibility that 2013 was.

I understand what you're saying, but think you should slow your roll. We wasted a full season with David Carr because Kubiak didn't switch when he had the chance... for whatever reason. 6-10... without that handicap, we could have finished better. should have finished better.

Same here. O'Brien played the hand he was dealt. Should he have changed QBs earlier? I argued that he should have at the time, but my job wasn't on the line. At the time, I didn't think we would be in the Dallas game, but we were. & because of that I felt we would have an opportunity to win the Indy game at home. We played well enough that I thought we'd have a chance @ Pitt.

So I can understand. Obviously don't agree. But I understand.

So now we know Kubiak could have ditched Carr? Opposite of the usual assumption here (which has a pretty good basis).

I don't see the situations as similar in that regard. I think QB was chief concern in McNair's coaching choice but one was to fix a QB and one was to find a QB.

His QB's have been a combination of Ryan Fitzpatrick and a guy with 1 career NFL start. The team is obviously improved over what we saw last year. I really don't understand the O'Brien hate. I understand frustration, but I see a lot of people who are already questioning O'Brien's future here and it just doesn't make sense to me.

Also, as sad as it may be to acknowledge this, as long as Luck is in Indy we won't be running away with anything. That team will be in the discussion as long as he is healthy.

I don't know if he could have, I know that he didn't & I believe we'd have won more games if he had. David Carr was a lost cause (hindsight & all) the will to win had been beaten out of him & blah, blah, blah... we've been over this a hundred times.

The point I was trying to make was they both played the hands they were dealt. To think Kubiak would be better than 5-5 with the schedule we faced isn't really an apples to apples comparison. Gotta play the ball where it lies. Or something like that.

Kubiak had 8 yrs and didn't do crap. It was time to move on. With Mallett playing QB you may get your wish. It appears that BOB is going to open up the offense a bit. Tell me about the health of the LB's and DB's on this team. They've had there fair share of injuries. The offense was held back by Fitz. IMHO.

Guys, there are quite a few other threads that you can take this discussion to. Could I ask that the weekly Injury Report threads be confined to contemporary injury discussion. Thanks.

Foster is vital 2 what Texans want to accomplish rest of season and that's to make a run at playoffs. They must beat Bengals 4 a chance.

John McClain @McClain_on_NFL · 40m 40 minutes ago

Foster has been undergoing every treatment possible but groin injuries r like hamstrings n that they can't b rushed.
John McClain @McClain_on_NFL · 41m 41 minutes ago

Foster was outstanding in last 2 games against Bengals, both wild card victories. His groin injury has 2 b healed to play.
John McClain @McClain_on_NFL · 43m 43 minutes ago

Texans have been extra cautious when bringing back injured players. They want them as close to 100 percent as possible.

John McClain @McClain_on_NFL · 44m 44 minutes ago
With Foster missing so much practice time last week, I'll be surprised if he plays. Everyone I've spoken to expects Blue to play.
