What do you expect from Texans vs Browns?

Team had a few days to heal and coaches to work on corrections and a game plan. Will Mallett come out nervous, maybe trying to win a long term contract somewhere? Who replaces KJ and was Rolle a one game wonder or a solid pick up? Morris seemed to be doing okay pre injury, will he be effective? Reed started season strong then evaporated like ice on hot sidewalk. Will he be invigorated by the bye?

Clowney effective or no or injured again?

What players will you focus on? For me, entire O line and CB replacing KJ.

I expect Mallett to play tentatively, making some nervous mistakes, but overall we'll see improvement at the QB spot and hope for the future. I'm eager to see who will be Malletts favorite receiver. I don't think we'll see the real potential that Clowney has to offer until next season, I don't expect anything from him in this game or the rest of this season. I expect the O-line to play better and that we'll play alot of 2 TE sets to help out the O-line as well as blocking from the RB spot. I expect to see the beginnings of a new AJ, new QB should bring a new attitude I hope. I want to see alot more of Morris and Rolle in the secondary, I want to get a bigger sample size to know if they're with the Texans next season. I don't think Reed is making the big plays but I think he does alot of the unseen things, non stat column things very well. He sets the edge against the run very well, covers RB's out of the back field very well, and rushes the QB well when given the chance. If he plays I expect to see a better Cushing. Overall I want to see an attitude change.

Hey Wolf interested in why you think we will see more TE sets when we have not seen many successful plays so far? I too expected at season start but not so much now.

A big, fat W for the Texans. Followed by a bunch of "Told ya so!"s from me. :)

I expect a win.

I expect Mallet/OB to not be tentative, but rather to be aggressive and with the whole playbook available. I expect to see deep balls to both AJ and Hopkins; and with his added height, I expect to see balls over the middle to the TE's. We'll see quick, decisive throws ( I hope they're accurate). No sacks. I expect to see a decent run game if Blue starts or a really good effort if Foster is good to go. We'll have a balanced, effective offense. Exactly what we've all been waiting for.

We have run 2+ TEs on 18% of plays and yet 5 of 11 passing TDs have come from those plays.

I expect to see an aggressive Mallett try to force some throws and be confused by coverages. I expect a loss.

I want to see a multiple offense that takes advantage of Cleveland's particular weaknesses.

But I think we're going to see OBs "don't lose" game plan.... the same offense we've been watching for the last two years. Only this time, we're going to see "a better Schaub." "Better" as in health, not production wise...

It's going to look different, but it's going to be the same old "do what we do" offense.

Not a great coming out party for a new QB and opening the offense. They are tight against the pass and get picks but give up lots of ypc on the ground - 4.7 ypc.

I expect the game plan to be largely the same with a few long attempts thrown in. But the whole thing could look and work better if Mallett sees inside the numbers. A couple hits down field and a couple TE receptions up the seam could loosen up everything we've been living on so far.

yeah I think the LB'ers could be exploited both in the running game and in the middle with slants and TE's down the seams, they have a very good secondary tho so forcing the safety's deep with a long pass or two early will be key

yeah a very small percentage of what I had expected..evidently an over reach on my part.

We haven't run it much but when we have it has been successful was the illustration. Fitz has been by far better at 2 and 3 TE sets. So yeah to answer your question on why expect more, maybe we shouldn't, but the assertion it hasn't been successful is incorrect (which makes not using it more mind boggling).

Yeah, I was speaking of successful as wanting to see it much more, incorrect wording on my part as I thought TE would play a huge part in new offense.

I expect a Texans win!! I think Mallett wili go 24-30 for 340 yards; 2 TD's and 1 pick.........

Meh, who am I kidding! :gun:

I suspect what will happen is that the Texans "D" will destroy Hoyer, knocking him out of the game so that only Johnny "Football" Manziel comes in and destroys the Texans... Igniting yet further argument amount the Texans draft choices.

I expect we get beat. Mallett has completed only one pass in his NFL career. It is what it is and it ain't to good. I have no idea what's going to happen.

Hey Wolf interested in why you think we will see more TE sets when we have not seen many successful plays so far? I too expected at season start but not so much now.

More TE sets because just like I said more pass protection, helping out the O-line. If I were head coach I'd want to be playing some max protect scenarios expecting the Browns to blitz the hell out of a new QB. Our TE's might still release into the pass pattern as a safety valve and to pull some coverage from the WR's, but I'd expect alot of chip blocking from them. I also expect that we'll run the ball alot to lessen the pressure on Mallett.

I expect a loss. Cleveland is a tough defense for any new starting QB.

People seem to think that Cleveland is some sort of garbage team and they aren't. They're 6-3 with Hoyer at QB. They're playing pretty good football this year, and shouldn't be overlooked especially by a team like us.

Hopefully Mallet can catch them off guard and make it difficult for them.

I expect a more interesting game than we've been seeing, because I want to see what Mallet has. He will likely make some mistakes, but I think he will play fairly well. He has been waiting a long time for this opportunity; he might be one of those guys that seize the opportunity when it is finally presented.

If he doesn't play well I hope it is just first game jitters. It is painful to watch the Texans offense when it is limited by the QB. I don't want to see that limited offense the rest of the season.

I expect a slippery ice bowl of injuries and lots of snow so the goings on will be slow . If we fall down less we win !:snowday:

thought temp was to be apprx 38? That's not icy. Cold but not too bad if not too humid, unless this artic blast drives it lower than I last saw?

This doesn't even qualify as cold, but... Some how the Texans have been lucky enough to play some of the coldest games during their existence. Their record in cold is better than their overall record. IIRC in Chicago and in Green Bay for coldest games of the year and victories is correct and I think Schaub set a passing record against the Packers at home.

I expect weather conditions to have a major impact on game. 30 degrees at kick off with 30 mph gusts and possible snow.

The loss of Alex Mack at center has really hurt the Browns running game. With Foster healthy --advantage Texans in the running game.

Browns punt/kick returners have been big disappointment --I'm not informed about Texans special teams---I would guess advantage Texans.

Its hard to guess how Mallet will do in his first start. I imagine he has a limited playbook and the Texans will pound the ball at the Browns sucky run defense. Hoyer has shown that he can be accurate in bad windy weather (see Cincy game). My guess is that the Browns have an advantage with Hoyer.

I expect to see an old fashioned slug fest low scoring affair that comes down to field position and which QB can complete timely passes.

This is a big game for both teams-- a lot on the line for both teams.

I know about "any given Sunday", a W is a W is W, and you gotta play who is on your schedule, but in another thread it has been pointed out that the two quality wins against Pittsburgh and Cincy are about all they have had on their schedule. They have the lowest Strength of Schedule and Strength of Victory of any current playoff team.

They started the season 1-2 against Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Baltimore. Three legitimately tough teams. Since then they have been 5-1, but four of the teams they have played are a combined 4-34 on the season. Getting blown out by the Jags in some ways cancels out the good wins they had against Pittsburgh and Cincy in that 5-1 run.

I was just at Wembley on Sunday evening watching the Jags get blown out by the Cowboys. The Texans took the Pokes into OT before losing. Not saying that Cowboys blow out Jags blow out Browns ergo the Texans win, but just saying they have had a pretty even mix of playing good games and playing some really bad teams. One would think that with the four worst teams in football on your first half schedule that you would be 6-3.

They're going to do to Mallett what they did to Andy Dalton...

But I hope not. Always pulling for the Texans to win. I can hope, right?

This. Probably a 6TD "Rapistburger-esq" performance out of Mallet (The first of many) and the start of our march to the Super Bowl and the team's first title (again, first of many).

I think he'll look good in one of these

Probably be the first guy in Canton to get two of them for no reason in particular and it all begins Sunday!

Hopefully. :goodluck:

Can't you photoshop a kilt with that thing to make the perfect picture?

Some elevating news:

The Browns' struggles to catch and return punts continued.

Browns return man Jim Leonard fumbled at the Cleveland 32 following a short return in the first quarter, setting up a Bengals field goal. It was Cleveland's second lost fumble on a punt return.

The Browns entered the game with 13 fair catches, and 14 punt returns and a 2.6-yard average.

For perspective, 36.7 percent of all fielded punts were fair caught in 2013.

Ganguli throws out some interesting numbers which leave me asking some important questions.

Will this be a turnover battle?.........the Texans lead the league with 21 takeaways...........the Browns only had 5 takeaways in their first 4 games, but 12, over the last 4 games.

And can the Texans lose their dubious NFL 2nd position crap stat of giving up big plays over 30 yds.........19?

Is the Browns new running game a fluke or for real?........The Browns' rushing yardage total for Games 6, 7 and 8 combined was 158. Then, they come up with NFL season best 170 yards against the Bengals. Will our inconsistent run defense make the Browns look like a running powerhouse, whether they are or not?

I think once they fall 17 points behind they won't be trying to run the ball much so we'll be good.

Several articles (including McClain's) have said that the Texans need Cushing back because of the Browns running game. First of all, Cushing will have no more lateral mobility than he has shown this season. He makes whatever tackles he makes within a couple of steps from where he begins. Watching the Browns, you will notice that very few of their runs are up the middle.......they are wide to either side..........areas of the field sadly beyond Cushing's reach. Our run defense has been nothing to brag about. But those spread to the outside have all too often been killers. If we don't adjust to counter the Browns' running game, we will have a very difficult time staying up with them, let alone talking about taking a 17 point lead.

You sunshine pumper :D

:swatter:

I HOPE : that the defense keeps it close and Mallett makes no mistakes and makes just enough throws to win the game. The running game is absolutely key to winning. If the game is low scoring and close the Texans have a chance. Think Texans vs Bears 2012.

I EXPECT : that Hoyer will slice up the secondary for multiple TDs, meanwhile the Browns D will shut down the Texans running game and will pick off a very nervous and battered Mallett mulitiple times. The Texans O will struggle to move and will make it to the Browns side of the field no more than on 3 drives. Blowout loss for Texans.

That's what I'm expecting, along with strong winds and blowing snow.

That's what I'm expecting, along with strong winds and blowing snow.

forecast is for mid 30's and sw wind at 13mph

We may see an "old-fashioned" outdoor football game. Mid 30's (now adjusted to 30 to 27) does not refer to "chill factor" which will be lower. Things will be especially uncomfortable since full cloud conditions are predicted. They were not expecting any snow until Sunday night (20%). The local weather reports have just changed the forecast for 60% chance of snow during the day. A wind of 13 mph is certainly better than the 30 mph reported earlier........BUT........that can still play havoc with the passing game. Cleveland Municipal Stadium was notorious for severe impossible swirling winds. So when their new stadium was built the architects made sure they designed breaks in the "bowl." Still turbulence and gusts of winds continue to factor in disrupting the passing game, courtesy of the Canadian Jet Stream. (Hopefully, Mallet will have a greater ability to shoot the ball through the resistant wind.)

Like I said, this could be an "old fashion" game.........not so good for players coming off of injuries.....especially soft tissue injuries. But also potentially perilous for those players still categorized as "healthy."

Here's to an injury-free game for BOTH sides.
