Texans roster moves

PDS ‏@PatDStat · 2m
O’Brien says he is fielding a lot of calls on his roster about certain players. #Texans

Well this came out of left field. Wonder who is calling and about whom?

Well, here's a guy a lot of folks were wondering about who's apparently not gonna be one of those cut today/tomorrow.

Keshawn Martin will start the Texans' regular season as their kick and punt return man, head coach Bill O'Brien said on Friday.

I dunno, if Groves is a surprise cut, which OLB prospect would be a surprise to make the roster ?

Quentin Groves has been cut by the #Texans.

Really thought he was gonna make it

i thought he had a lot of potential and would be someone we'd try to get on the practice squad. he had a ton of burst off the line, but seemed to get nowhere with it - could be pretty good with proper coaching. then i saw he was in his 6th or 7th year. that's a little too far along to have no hands and no rush moves.

I strongly suspect some of these folks will end up on our practice squad. So we probably haven't seen the last of Labhart or Denham.

If I was another team, I'd stash Labhart on my practice squad. Hopefully it is us that he ends up with.

Labhart needs to be put on PS. My guess is Texans believe, his pedigree will allow him to make it through the waiver process. I thought the kid played very well and deserved a roster spot. I guess maybe he couldn't contribute enough on ST to merit the spot.

That's my thoughts also that a 4th or 5th wr has to contribute on ST to justify a spot, because they aren't going to see the field much on offense.

I agree with the 4th or 5th WR needing to help on ST, and since they announced Keyshawn Martin will be returning kicks and punts I think they will also cut EZ and Thomas (keeping only 4 WRs) in favor of keeping more O line depth.

I paid careful attention to Sidbury this past game, and I didn't think he played too well. I mean it's always hard to evaluate guys from the armchair while watching on TV, so I grant you that, but I thought he was kind of slow - slow afoot, slow to react, and didn't hold the point of attack real well. He was on my cut list after that game.

Now the other guy that they brought in at the same time - Quintin Groves, I think has more than held his own. He still looks like a complimentary edge rusher to me. I think he still has some tread left on the tires and can be the fourth OLB on the roster. In fact, so far I like him better on passing downs than WM who still has yet to reach his potential and may never do so. In any case, I think Groves makes the team.
wow, I thought Sidbury went nuts against Atlanta.

O’Brien: Several teams are interested in trading with Texans

8/29/2014 7:31:46 PM

The Texans have been getting a lot of calls from teams trying to make them the deal of a lifetime, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Opponents look at the Texans’ quarterbacks and see where Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and Tom Savage combined for two touchdown passes and a 61.3 rating, and they’re willing to make a deal for just the right price – like a third-string quarterback for a second-round pick.

“I’ve fielded a lot of calls,” coach Bill O’Brien said, not mentioning any specific position. “It’s that time of year, and those are interesting calls. It tells you what people think about your roster, and it also tells you about their roster. Without getting into details on that, you certainly field a lot of calls like, ‘We’re heavy here. Do you need this? It looks like you’re kind of light at that position?’ Those type of calls happen all the time.”

RIIIIIIIGHT!!!!:cheese:

Probably out there, but ILB Chris Young has be cut by the #Texans

– like a third-string quarterback for a second-round pick.
And some people wonder why John McClain isn't more widely revered here. Just made-up b.s.

So nine down and thirteen more cuts to make...?

well there you go and will make many happy. At least he had lots of plays this preseason in place of Joseph. I think he will be picked up.

The irony is that Harris played better this preseason than he ever had and was a better fit in Crennel's defense. Still, he's not as talented as Bouye, Hal, and Victorian. Or a CB the Texans are likely to find on the waiver wire.

#Texans traded 73rd & 138th pick to get 60th pick used on Brandon Harris. NE drafted RB Stevan Ridley, OT Marcus Cannon w/ those picks.

I'm guessing Labhart doesn't get practice squaded.

What does he have to practice, he runs great routes and has exceptional hands. If he can't make the roster he's not getting any better and just isn't an NFL athlete.

I still firmly believe Gary and Wade controlled the draft here. Told Rick who they wanted and get them no matter what.

I think you're on the right track. Who knows he still may just be a figurehead for OB.

Fine if that's the case, I don't think it is though.

Look at this years draft. Early but it is already showing to a pretty damn good class.

The #Texans have cut LB Chris McAllister, per a league source.

I've been preaching this forever.
Wade, Gary, and now O'Brien pick the players they want and Smith makes the moves necessary to get them.

Still no real shockers. Although I would have liked to see Labhart make the 53.

Your opinion: were Gary and Wade just shitty at talent evaluation?
More along the lines of "nobody bats 1.000". They hit on some and missed the hell out of others. Where I think they fell down was creating quality depth. And you get that in rounds 3-5, even later if you're lucky. Kubiak failed to snag Schaub's successor and begin grooming him (surely he couldn't have thought that was Yates). I don't see where Wade snagged anyone to replace Cushing or to help Watt. That, to me, is where they fell short.

What a disappointment. I had high hopes for him, loved the 2nd round pick and even mocked him to the Texans in the 1st round a couple times. Can't say that I'm sorry to see him go though, Bouye and Hal seem to be taking Harris roster spot.
