J.J. Watt aims to be dominant, go to Super Bowl

With defensive tackle Nick Fairley finding himself in multiple jackpots this offseason, Texans fans are happier than ever that their favorite team picked defensive end J.J. Watt instead.

If Watt has his way, they’ll be even happier.

“Last year I wanted to be a contributor and just help us win games and now I want to be dominant and establish myself as a top-tier defensive end,” Watt said Tuesday, via comments distributed by the team.

So what are his overall goals? “Super Bowl,” Watt said. “That’s it.”

Watt showed flashes of dominance as a rookie. After generating 5.5 sacks during the regular season, Watt produced 3.5 in two postseason games, along with an interception he returned 29 yards for a touchdown against the Bengals in the wild-card round.

“I did some good things at the end of the year but I want to put a whole year together,” Watt said. “I started off a little rusty last year, so this year I want to come out from the gate and show everybody what I’m about and show everybody what this defense is about.”

Watt and his teammates showed plenty in 2011. If Watt becomes what he hopes to become in 2012, Watt very well may reach his objective.

The interception of Dalton in the wild card game was...amazing.

Will never forget it. It was unreal.

He threw the ball, Watt jumps, and all of a sudden he's racing to the end zone. I had sort of zoned out and wasn't really watching the play when it happened. I just sat there...stunned.
 
I'm excited to see Watt in beast mode all year. With Smith on the other side playing his ass off in a contract year, our secondary having a full off season and TC in our new system, the addition of Mercilus to give our outstanding LB a quality rotation to keep everyone fresh, and Cushing being Cushing we should be just fine on the defensive side of the ball.

I just think this guy is going to go down as an all time Texans legend. I love his swag, and his approach to the game.
 
Looking at the team that's been assembled, it's hard to gripe too much about the "squeaky clean player" approach McNair has. We have some real beasts on both side of the ball, but none of the distractions that a team like the Lions, Steelers, sAints, Raiders have.

JJ seems to embody all of the qualities the Texans have strived for since day one. I see him as more of a replacement for Ryans' leadership than Cushing. JJ reminds me of AJ. He walks the walk but doesn't have to be over the top about it. Cushing is far more demonstrative and over the top. I love that about Cushing and it gets people fired up, but players have to know when to reel it in. Players like AJ and JJ can reel others in with their on/off field persona's and let others know what is expected of a Texan.

I think we have our Bagwell and Biggio after 10 years.
 
If Watt can consistently play like he did from the Indy game through the rest of the way, he can become the best defensive player in the league.
 
I also recall two B.S. calls against him where he got a sack, but it was called back due to a low hit on the QB. One against Pitt, another against Indy.

So in my mind, he had 7.5 sacks in the regular season. Did I miss any more?

That Dalton pass was destined to be a pick six even if Watt had not snatched it out of thin air. McCain (I think?) was waiting for it. It was the perfect playcall is all I have to say.
 
Considering the final score, that changed the course of the game. And if I remember correctly, the defense had been struggling some. As someone mentioned they had some calls that went against them and extended a few Bengal drives. This play finally kind of swung the momentum in our favor and turned the tide.

Don't forget about Crick.

If he can stay healthy, he may be the best pickup of the draft.

I just wonder about his injuries. He dropped in the draft because of concerns about that.

Hopefully he can stay on the field. He's a great fit for Wade's defense.

InjurY. 1 Injury. A torn pec, just like Mario had last year. From what I can tell, he doesn't have a history of injuries.

His sophomore year, he had 75 tackles and 9.5 sacks. His junior year, he had 70 tackles and 9.5 sacks. His senior year, he tore his pec early and because of that, didn't have recent tape so he dropped.

If he comes out after his junior year (when he was a 2nd team all-american), he's drafted a lot higher. He could end up being a steal.

But it's not like he's fragile like Fangupo is.

edit: He missed some time during the off season with a knee injury....
 
I wasn't suprised by the JJW pick. I was expecting that after seeing him swat balls down all season long. What I didn't expect was for him to directly catch it as if the pass was intended for him, gather his feet after jumping for the ball, and then (the best part) have enough speed to avoid the tackle.

I went and did some digging, this is what I found:

Houston Texans - Jared Crick, DL, Nebraska (126th pick overall) - Probably a second-round pick had he not lost a great deal of the 2011 season to injury, but Crick was medically cleared at the scouting combine, and he's a perfect movable chess piece for Wade Phillips' defensive fronts. He has the ability to play five-tech end and some outside end in four-man fronts, and given Phillips' recent preference for putting lighter guys inside as nose tackles in his one-gap concepts, I could see Crick getting some time there as well. Perfect marriage of player and scheme.

Sprained knee and torn pec in 2011. Could not participate in Senior Bowl. Cleared for combine and did well.

Nick Toon had a 4th round grade, like Crick did. Toon had battled a nagging foot injury that affected his draft ranking.

I think it's fair to say that Crick AND Toon are two players who had solid careers in college but have the injury question upon them. Arian Foster had a injury that had affected his own Pro Day (or Combine, can't remember which) so I think Crick will be just fine. Hopefully.

I sat twelve rows away from it, right at the 30. The most memorable live sports occurrence I've ever witnessed. The two drunk dorks in front of me had just left for halftime refills.

And AJ's TD catch happened at almost the same yard marker in the second half.

I only get to go to one game a year, 2 if I'm lucky. I was at the game where AJ put a beat down on Cortland innagin. 40yd line, club level, 5 beers in, cheering AJ along with the rest of the stadium as he walked off the field and into the tunnel, best game ever.

I was a bigger believer in JJ Watt than he, himself when we drafted him.

It was still unbelievable to watch his phenomenal progress.

I thought we're going to get a player that can be as dominant inside as Mario Williams has been on the outside (when he was here - and healthy), but I really didn't expect it so soon.

I just hope the team can stay "relatively" healthy.
This should be a fun season for all, knock on wood.

Im not looking forward to either of those guy's testing the FA market .... Better get them locked in .... or I fear they will be playing for the next Barfallo Bills team that has a cool hundred million to throw at them.

Smith would be crazy to let them test the market. Hopefully he locks them up.
 
Watt is a second year player who had a good rookie year capped by a great initial playoff game. He's not an All-Pro. He should quit with the sensational quotes and the seeking of media attention and focus on having a good follow through year.

Don't be too surprised when he is. JJ Watt is an All Pro talent. He will be recognized as such more likely sooner than later.

Just a great initial game? He had 12 tackles and 2.5 sacks against the Ravens too. He's only gonna get better from what he was as a rookie which is downright scary. And he might be the hardest worker on the team.

What has he done to go out of his way to draw attention to himself? I've only heard other people talking him up, I haven't heard him being a ham or an idiot or anything.
 
When I was watching the Colts game, despite the questionable penalties, he took over the game. It was obvious he wasn't prepared to lose, and for a rookie DE to do that blew my mind.

It was more impressive than Mario in the OT Redskins game. I'm a Mario fan so..........

A rookie DE in a 3-4...... that's unheard of imo.
 
The guys on NFL 32 were ragging Wade Phillips statement about JJ Watt destined to become a HOFer.

They said "Flag on the play," and Jason Taylor and that other doof began cat-calling Wade's statements.

I hope JJ and Wade see that video clip, it's on ESPN.go.com today (8-2-2012) on their NFL page. Sort of buried in with the Detroit Lions video clip.

I hope he dominates in 2012. Let's see what those guys have to say when it's over. Their comments were bulletin board stuff all the way. Not disrespectful, but definitely something JJ and Wade could use for motivation.

I'd have it playing on the largest screen I could put it on when JJ and the defense comes out to practice the next time. Make JJ stare at it and watch it. In front of the team. I bet Kubiak wouldn't even let the defense go up against the offense that day of they showed it to JJ and the gang. Out of fear.

Wow! Some folks just don't have a clue. It's like they're watching a different sport or something.

And I'll go with Wade Phillips' observations over BullBlitz observations all day every day.
