I like what I see of his footage. Natural passer. Led them to 11-2, had like 3,500'ish yards and 24 TDs despite having really inconsistent pass protection.

That's someone off the top of my head.

Few teams have a more talented roster than the Houston Texans but even then the team can't escape questions. With their hopes resting on a closing windows, should they find help by dealing Ben Tate to the San Diego Chargers?

Tate deal could help Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson

The Texans have the good fortune of two top flight running backs on their roster in stud Arian Foster and backup Ben Tate. It was them and a suffocating defense that got the team to the divisional playoff round with their third-string quarterback T.J. Yates. It's left Houston fans wondering what could have happened if starter Matt Schaub had stayed healthy and thrown passes to All-Pro Andre Johnson instead. Given how the team played against the Baltimore Ravens, fans can only grab their heads in disappointment. Anyone who has watched staples like Schaub and Johnson know the window on a Super Bowl can close as quickly as it opens. Both players are 30 or older but still hold the title of most important players on the team and that's because of their positions. The worse fact is the Houston Texans have lost much of their depth at quarterback and wide receiver from last year. The best way for them to get it back would take high draft picks. That could call for a sacrifice in a trade, and why having Tate is so important.

The last time the San Diego Chargers were Super Bowl favorites late in a season they still had LaDainian Tomlinson coming off an MVP season. Now the potential Hall of Fame running back retires leaving his old quarterback Philip Rivers to try to take what many think is a sinking team to the mountain top. One player experts and fans have their eyes on is Tomlinson's replacement, Ryan Mathews. Highly graded out of college Mathews hasn't hit the superstar level yet. He also has some fumbling problems that won't go away and with Mike Tolbert in Carolina the burden has gotten heavier for him. Rivers has played his best football with a good running game, something he didn't have much of last year. It's why fans have pushed GM A.J. Smith to find some help like free agent Cedric Benson or even a trade. That's where Ben Tate comes in. The Texans backup is eager to prove he can start for any team but with an All-Pro like Foster in front of him his best chance is to leave for another team. San Diego would fit perfectly as his size and strength would compliment the speed of Mathews. If the price weren't too high Houston also might get another high draft pick to find more young talent.

Ben Tate said he would stay patient with the Houston Texans but they might not do the same with him. As Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson grow older their title window closes. If the San Diego Chargers can offer a sweet deal to bring back some LaDainian Tomlinson magic, then it could and should happen.

Barkley is an option, Tyler Wilson, there's more than a few more who could move up that high if they declare for the draft but their names escape me. Aaron Murray (Georgia) is also a guy who could seemingly slip into the first. And Landry Jones may creep up that high (Although I want no part of him).

Yeah that's who I would target. Barkley will be the number 1 or 2 pick depending on who gets it, Wilson could be top 5 just because of the position. If he can be a franchise QB then it doesn't matter what spot, just get him.

No!!! Not no, but **** NO!!!! NOT this year, but you consider to this next year when our supposed "back-up" RB is very valuable to teams that know that Tate is a starting back. We "Texans Fans" love Tate but also realize he'll have a secondary role here behind "Namaste"....

Bitness aside, I would love to keep both these mofos together over the next few years....

I have no idea what that meant (I'm typing on a laptop, things come out different than you type them)......

I would love to re-sign Ben Tate beyond 2013.. If not, keep him this season as a breather, a "change of pace", a short down back, whatever!!!.......... Someone who can truly contribute in all of those regards!!

God forbid that something happens to AF, would trading away Ben Foster 2 years before his contract be worth it????

Let's have this conversation this time - next year, no?

First let me say, "Huh?". What constitutes "too high" and what would be a "high draft pick"? It's OK for the Texans to ask for a 1st for Tate, but not a 1st and a 2nd? What is he talking about?

Second, Ryan Mathews was 5th in the AFC in total yards behind the superstar RBs Foster, Rice, and Jones-Drew, along with the underrated Bills Fred Jackson. Plus, they signed veteran Ronnie Brown has a backup this offseason. The Chargers don't need to spend big in trade value on another RB. A ridiculous suggestion.

not a first, probably early to mid second which is still considered a high pick. I sure as hell wouldn't do it, he is coming into his prime & another pivotal weapon to swing important match-ups in a stretch run deep into the playoffs for the Texans keeping Foster fresh.

Foster is here for 4 more years no matter what. He won't become "too expensive" in any of those years.

But you're right about the need for Tate if Foster gets hurt.
 
Foster and Tate offer us a proven ground attack. Trading Tate is a gamble I would not be willing to take.

Where was Ben Tate in the second half of the Baltimore game?

Maybe other GMs would look at that & deduce that he's not ready for the big games.

I would do it in Madden in a heartbeat. But if I were GM of the Texans, I would not trade him right now. Foster-Tate is the strongest 1-2 punch in the NFL. And we all know what happens when the Texans run the ball 30+ times a game.

How will the WR corps look without AJ. Trading Tate would've allowed that problem to be solved and solved future contract issues.

I guess it comes down to if you think Ward and Forsett are capable backups vs the WR corps Walter/Posey/Jean/Martin being capable of replacing AJ as WR1 if AJ were to get hurt.

BTW, Who is more likely to get injured and miss a significant amount of time next season Foster or AJ? This question may be better answered by C-N-D.

1. Have we re-signed Ward? Or are you implying if we traded Tate we could re-sign Ward to the team? As a GM, I would only entertain trading Tate if I have a very viable option at RB that both I and the HC feel very comfortable with. I wouldn't trade him and take the "risk" that I don't quite replace him.

2. If we were to trade Tate, I would want it to be for a legitimate WR that can produce THIS season. Not a draft pick that would take time to develop.

As soon as I read this I said "Packers". The team has not had a running game in years and is loaded with WR talent. Seems like a no brainer if something was to happen.

Yeah I still think he could of been a very good QB had he gone to a better situation. Of course he was and is injury prone. Shame. Still think Luck was over rated though. Having said that, wish he was a Texan.

Andrew Luck in a Kubiak offense would kill. But you don't get to build teams that way.
