[CHRONIC] Smith signing means Texans might lean toward OLB in draft

Texans34Life

I BLEED TEXANS!
http://blogs.chron.com/nfl/2009/02/smith_signing_means_texans_mig.html

Smith didn't cost a lot, either. His five-year deal is worth $35 million, but the only guarantee is his $12.5 million signing bonus. Getting Smith gives them flexibility on draft day. I feel stronger than ever that they're going to select an OLB in the first round, and they might trade down to do it. I also think they'll draft another defensive end after the first round, perhaps in the second.

The rest is in the link....

If we were to stay at 15..it looks like Cushing...If we can trade down, maybe a good shot at Mathews...the way it all looks Pre Draft.:d:

If Kubes want to move Ryans outside the steal of the draft is Franz Joseph.

Joseph may be able to play the Sam & should be available in the 3-4 rd.

Is this written by the same John McClain that said we were definitely not looking at any other QB's besides Ramsey no later than yesterday?

I'm sure we're looking at BPA on the defense and probably a trade down. I doubt that they have their hearts set on one guy right now.

Will we still focus on a first round pass rusher? Will we settle for a situational pass rusher? I think it was a solid selection, Smith can play DT or DE. He is not the speed guy we would covet. :fans:

I don't think so. I figure that the Texans were looking at BPA already, and this really doesn't do anything to that. I don't believe that it will rule out a pass rusher if they believe the right one is available at 15.

I agree we still need that 3rd pass rush specialist.

This might even allow the Texans to move down & take a chance on Michael Johnson. I read one write-up that said he has the potential of being like Peppers. I'm not real sure about his work ethic, but the talent sure is there.

I remember being high on Justin Tuck when he came out, but he dropped all the way to the 3rd round & was taken right after we selected Vernand Morency. How'd you like to re-do that pick?

It took him 2 years to develop, but he's now a monster DE & he's only 25 years old. If the coaches get a good feeling about MJ, I'd be perfectly happy taking a chance on the future of this organization.

Oh, now I can sign up for this idea if he makes it that far.

I think he goes in round 2, though.

Cushing...or trade down and get Matthews.

If Cushing gets taken before 15 I wonder if we can afford to trade down? I am also curious to see what kind of gap there is between these two when draft day finally rolls around. Right now I agree with your statement and I would hope that Cushing is there so we don't have to gamble that other teams grab them both following a trade down but the closer we get the less outrageous, at least to me, it would be to just take whichever one is still on the board when we pick.

I'd take any of the USC LB's at #15.

Mauauluga would force you to move Demeco to Sam.

Cushing or Matthews would play SLB.

I'd go so far as to say if they like Matthews, stand pat and take him at 15. He may be an even pass rusher than many of the DEs we'd look at later in the draft.

I'm with Ole Miss on this. I don't care if every mock out there has Matthews falling into the second or third round. I don't care if every Kiper-clone out there says that he shouldn't be taken before the second round. If Matthews is there at 15, and we think he's going to upgrade our D better than anyone else out there, don't get tricksy with the trade downs.

Just take him.

IMO, there will be a fair amount folks looking for a OLB that can put their hand in the dirt and rush if needed. Cushing may be the guy that drops because of all the buzz regarding roids (I know it bothers me) and Mathews looks like a guy on the rise. Originally I thought a trade back to the low 20s and pick Mathews would be the thing to do, but now I doubt he will still be there. So, I don't think we should jack around and just pick him at 15.

I don't agree with McClain at all.

The main guys at DE are all pass rushers, and we still need one. I don't think this signing has any effect on what we do in the first round.

Meco would not want to move from the Mike. Might as well trade him on draft day if we're going to do that.

"How do you know that?"

When he was a rookie, the coaches were hesitant to put him in there. He got in there, during camp, and the coaches penciled him in at the Mike shortly after. And I remember the video interviews at texans.com where DeMeco was talking about how he's made for the Mike, he wasn't too high on playing the corners, etc. The overall attitude was "This is my spot. This is where I play. I want to call the shots. I can do this."

I'm not knocking him, so don't go there fellow flame-throwers. I'm just saying that drafting a guy in the first round to play the Mike is NOT going to sit well with DeMeco Ryans unless he has some huge change of heart.

He feels he's being snubbed in contract talks. This, IMO, would send him through the roof.

If we were able to trade DeMeco on draft day, and grab Maualuga from USC (whom I think is going to be a star LB in the NFL) I'd do it. DeMeco was a 2nd round pick (IIRC) and we can command great compensation for him. I just have a bad feeling about the ending of the DeMeco/Texans story. Drafting a round 1 LB will accelerate that unless the agent and the FO can agree on a long-term contract for Meco.

Foxsports.com still has us taking Orakpo at 15, due to the need of an elite pass rusher. DE, LB, and CB should be the top 3 nail-biting choices for Smithiakush at 15, even if we trade down.

Orakpo will have to get caught doing heroin/THG speedballs with a transvestite hooker to drop to #15.

Oh, I know. It's beyond absurd.

It would take a series of mistakes by the teams in front of us, as well as some teams taking needs that the draft gurus are not aware of. It's a long shot.

I remember thinking the Dolphins were idiots for passing on Amobi and taking Ginn Jr. Well, I think Amobi might be a bit behind Ginn Jr. at this stage in terms of overall impact on their respective teams.

Last year's trade down was acceptable because we had no 2nd round pick, so picking up an extra 3rd soothed the pain a little bit. If we trade down this year, and we let some guys go off the board in the meantime, especially a few guys we targeted and thought would still be there, it could be a disaster.

Here's to hoping we don't get too cute and that the best decision is made when number 15 rolls around. If Smithiakush gets too cute, which is a big temptation for that crew, it'll hurt us. But I have to admit that I was skeptical of the Slaton pick...and that would not have even happened had we not traded down. So what the crap do I know.

I would love to get USC OLB Brian Cushing but if he is gone what about his running mate and the top MLB in the draft Rey Maualuga? I think that he would be a great 2nd prize if Brian Cushing is gone then we can move Demeco Ryans back to OLB his old position in college!!!!

I actually like Maualuga better. There's Something About Samoans on defense.

And that dude looks borderline crazy in his promotional photos. Give me some bad intentions on our defense, please. And a steady dose of ill will toward opposing offenses.

How serious/legit is the potential & speculated steroids issue with Cushing? You know that Bobby McNair doesn't like even the hint of impropriety...

My dream senario:

Mark Sanchez falls to us and we trade back and pick up another 3rd or 4th and then draft Mathews or Malauga if he's there.

Ryans, Malauga,Xdibi 2009!

What about if we drafted Michael Johnson and moved him to a OLB on 1st and 2nd down, and a Pass Rusher on 3rd down? Just a thought...

Nobody concerned about steroid use and Cushing. Not really that fast, but does look quick based on combine. I know combine is just a bunch of drills, but if Cushing was on steroids during college, then he is going to less in the pros without. Just don't want to risk our 1st choice on him. Don't want another Tejada, I know wrong sport and age difference, Still.

Nothing in the draft is sure. Why bring in another issue. Thanks
Just my opinion.

Its a justifiable reason to worry. However he claims he has passed over 7 test in the last year. He passed the one at the combine so I doubt its a real issue. Still IMO there are more plusses in drafting Mathews.

Wasent a few months ago are biggest problem was SS and FS ... no one ever talks about this anymore ....

i don't see how this makes our first rounder an automatic OLB. i agree that it PROBABLY won't be another DE but this team has more needs than just those two positions. if we trade back Matthews is an option but wasn't this team high on Sean Smith? i've seen him flying up boards and going bottom of the first, top of the secondish. not saying that we don't need another LB but there are more needs than just this.

I want another DE anyway....lol

I think all this does is open the texans up to take the Best Available player, which is a great spot to be in...

Why isn't anyone mentioning Laurinaitis? He's dropping in most mocks. Why is this? I know his 40 time was poor, but the body of the man's work is without question. He's an extremely smart player, very athletic, can play all 3 linebacking positions & isn't a one year wonder. He's done it for 3 straight years. Someone is going to get a steal in this draft if he drops to the 2nd round.

I think it's the conference he plays in. Not hard to look good in THAT conference, at least right now.

Not very fast and can't take on blockers. I would love him in the second

I'd take Rey Rey if he's there or Maclin if he isn't

Anyone but Michael Johnson

The more i watch of Laurenitis in the combine the more i think that he was just a product of the system.

Very stiff hips, and his footwork wasnt great either.

i say we trade ar pick and trade up

we need a new center and guard- for the aging Pitts

but deff a center

I think Conner Barwin is going to be really special. He's smart, athletic, big, and fast. He's a ex-te so he understands the passing game and drops. He can also rush the passer if bush wants to zone blitz with 5 man pressures. He's creeping into late 1st rd and one of those teams at the top, might want to get back into the 1st rd or one of those late teams might want to get up a little when the qb's fall.

How much money would you spend to embarrass him? If you had damn near unlimited dollars?

yep..that or CB but i think its LB just b/c this draft is deep with them. Curry's heading the class we should be able to scoop up 1 of those USC guys...
