ZGONINA CLOSE TO DEAL WITH TEXANS

A league source tells us that veteran defensive tackle Jeff Zgonina is close to striking a deal with the Houston Texans.

Zgonina, who has spent the last four seasons with the Dolphins, has played with a total of six franchises. He appeared in 14 games in 2006, with two starts.

In our view, the no-nonsense veteran could help to light a fire under the No. 1 overall pick in last year's draft, defensive end Mario Williams.

He will be 37 in May and has a career 23.5 sacks. I can't see this being some great FA move.

this is a pretty good pick-up except that he is old. but if we draft Landry we can have a DOMINATING D-FENCE

I say depending on the money, its a great pickup. A vet with a good track record of being healthy can provide valuable depth to a position we need depth at

I agree. If we draft Landry we can have a "DOMINATING D-FENCE". Whether or not we sign Jeff Zgonina though will have absolutely no impact on that.

in an interview while in houston, Zgonina himself said he isn't very mobile anymore. He said he was more of a run stopper. Why do we see this as a significant pickup. We need younger players who can pressure the QB. Looks like another player who won't contribute but will take away from the money we could spend to sign someone who can.

No need to be an @ss. I think it was down to a DT or Landry and this move should help solidify the line position. Isn't this a message board where people can publicy place their opinion? Or would you prefer I start another thread on ridding the franchise of Carr?

I like Zgonina depending on the contract. He's a solid veteran that provides valuable insurance in case Travis Johnson decides to continue being outplayed by street free agents...and if he's still not healthy ;)

i think it's either landry or quinn i know most people think he (Quinn) didn't show up in big games but i read somewhere that the notre dames defense did give up a average of like 35 points in each "big" game.

if the texans do sign this guy, all it means is that they do not have to draft for a need but can actually take the best player available on the board or try to move down and grab more picks, landry would be a good pick up but so would branch or okoye as well to help make the defense awesome

Agreed. Camp fodder. If he's on the opening day roster, I'll be shocked. Still waiting on a link for this information ?

This guy is strictly inexpensive depth most likely....he may/may not make it out of TC, depending on his mobility...if he is strong against the run, then why not add him if the price is right?

Kubiak's new game plan: reviving George Allen's "Over the Hill Gang."

Next up: Here comes Vinnie Testeverde.
