    5. Houston Texans. How many times did you see the Texans last year and say, "If they just had a little bit of a secondary, they'd be dangerous." Well, they should have a little bit of a secondary now, with quality cornerback Johnathan Joseph(notes) in the mix, as well as Danieal Manning(notes) at safety.

I'd put the Texans at #3 on this list over the Jags and the Seahawks considering the fact that they already had a good offense and they upgraded key spots on their defense. The Hawks and the Jags had good pick ups, but they still have huge holes like at QB. Jackson was hardly an upgrade to the Hawks. The Jags didn't get better on offense either.

Seems like those guys favored quantity over quality. Like Tex, I place us no less than 2nd or 3rd on that list. Sure, the Cardinals got Kolb but IMO, Joseph is a better corner than Kolb is a QB. That is not a knock; it just shows how good I think a healthy JoJo can be.

Not technically a FA signing, but we should also get credit for the hiring of new DC and the conversion of vet players to new positions.. essentially equivalent to bringing in new players

Also Seattle lost Tatupu. Pretty big hole at LB as well.

I think the Jags had a better offseason than the Texans, they signed two very good linebackers, and already have a great linebacker in Daryl Smith, and they signed a decent SS. While I agree we have the better offense, their defense aren't changing the system, so they're just gonna get better. Very rarely does a team change from 4-3 to 3-4 become good/decent in the first season, although it's not impossible. And I'm not completely sold on Danieal Manning, but that's just me.

A lot of people seem to be delusional about the Eagles as a team. Their offense last year was great, and won them many games, but their defense was average at best. Sure they were worth a good amount of fantasy points, but I think that is skewing people's perception of them. Their defense will be quite improved next year with Aso and DRC, but last year it was no where near 'top notch'. The only thing they did well was cause interceptions, which helps of course, but being 14th in yards given up through the air doesn't sound like 'top notch' to me.

I could be wrong, but I thought I heard that every team Wade came to and transitioned to a 3-4 went to the playoffs in his first season.

    Anyone confirm that?

If anyone will stop that trend it'll be us.

If I'm not mistaken Gibbs had some kind of running game mojo working too. I think slaton had that one good yr under him.

I think that by them giving wade so many resources though, we will be ok.

Yeah, Wade has had some success but he's not the diabolical mad genius who always has great defenses like a Monte Kiffen or a Jim Johnson or a Dick Lebeau. He's just the best defensive coordinator we've ever had. EDIT: Except for Dom Capers who unfortunately wasn't our DC.

And this is the mot talent we've had on the defensive side of the ball.

    So we should be good.

Yeah, but how much will the Jags improve on defense because of this?? Probably some, but will they be world beaters on D? I doubt it. The Texans were the worst defense in the NFL last season and one of the worst in history. I think the change to the 3-4 with a new DC in Wade is a very significant change for the better considering that we had Frank Bush last year and how bad we were. IN other words, we have a lot more room for improvement with the change to the 3-4 and with the new acquisitions. Plus, Kareem Jackson will no longer have to play the #1 CB spot on an island this season and he should improve as well. I think he will any way. Demeco will be back and Cushing will be here full season. I think the Texans will be able to have a much more significant improvement personally. I do like what the Jags did as well though.

It's easy to forget that the Jags were the 28th ranked D in yards (we were 30th). We gave up 427 points, the Jags gave up 419. The Jags were even worse than we were at 3rd down percentage. We were epically bad. We gave up a 100.5 passer rating and we were dead last in that category, but the Jags gave up a 98.5 passer rating and they were ranked 31st.

I think both of our teams made moves to dramatically improve our defenses. But we were both incredibly bad.

I don't understand this sentence. Are they saying that the Texans and Jags have closed the gap and that Houston is arguably stronger than Indy, or did they mean to say the Titans are a stronger team now?

When comparing the '09 Texans to the '10 Texans, the only major change was at CB, injuries not withstanding. We played the last 13 games of '09 as a top 10 D w/DROB at #1 CB. We played the last 15 games of the '10 season as a bottom 3 D with KJ at #1 CB. Since JJoe is generally regarded as better than DROB and we added some serious talent on that side of the ball, I see no reason we can't end up as top 15 in '11.
Couple that with an offense that should be a little more efficient, with the continuity of the OL and having a FB that, by all accounts will be utilized more than just as a battering ram, and I'm feeling cautiously optimistic. It's up to Wade to get his scheme across and get the players to buy into it. I don't think that will be a problem.

That's just funny. There are two kinds of people in this crappy world we live in: Texans and those that wish they were!!
