ATLANTA — Energy providers Mirant Corp. and RRI Energy Inc. said Sunday they are combining in a $1.61 billion stock-swap deal, renaming the company and creating a utility powerhouse that will become one of the nation's largest independent power producers.
The combined company, which will have a market capitalization of about $3.1 billion, will be called GenOn Energy.

Reports are the new combined company will be based in Houston.

GenOn is a horrible name for a sports stadium. They should just leave it as Reliant.

The new name would suck, I wish we could name our own stadium.

How much money does a stadium make by allowing a company to name it?

    Is is even worth it?

GenOn sounds like some sort of wierd sexual term, or at the very least a dumb cyber word. I'm not going to like the stadium if it's named GenOn. That just grates on my nerves for some reason.

Reliant the brand name is part of NRG Energy not the old RRI. The Mirant deal with RRI shouldn't have anything to do with Reliant or the naming.

    Veterans Stadium

whatever happened to the day when you named your field after great citizens? even venerable stadiums like Busch and Wrigley were advertising product indirectly but it was more about the community leaders that they were. you had honorary names like Veterans Memorial, Soldier Field or sometimes something that identifies your region like Three Rivers, Orange Bowl, Texas Stadium (RIP), or Mile High Stadium.

now most every stadium has a naming right to it and its just sad. a few are just using the ancillary sponsorship deals and keeping a name that represents the community or team, but most are going for every dollar they can get. my feelings are if public money was used to build the stadium then naming rights money should be banned. let democracy work and let the people name it, they helped pay for it. If a team is just given the land but no public money is used to build it, then I can see naming rights however they want, but good taste is priceless and some of the names have gotten ridiculous. GenOn would just be another name chock full'o fail.

the college bowl games are almost ruined by the name. too many to mention.

Reliant Energy, Inc. (NYSE: RRI), based in Houston, Texas, United States, is a non-utility[clarification needed], retail and wholesale electricity provider.[1] Reliant is headquartered in the Reliant Energy Plaza in Downtown Houston.[2]
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliant_Energy
Says here that Reliant is RRI, or the NYSE symbol for Reliant. But it seems clear that Reliant and Marant are combining into a third, new corporate entity with both Reliant & Marant ceasing to exist post-merger. Therefor there's nothing or no one left to benefit from the Reliant brand name.

The Texas retail business was sold to NRG last year.

    http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2009/03/02/daily2.html

This merger transaction between RRI and Mirant doesn't have anything to do the the retail business that we see here in Texas. It is basically a merger of two electricity generation businesses, neither of which have any significant presence in Texas.
