Oof. Very much an old coaches sucked but here’s all these nice things said about the new coach introduction. Awkward. Because the new coach knows someday he may be done up publicly that way too.

So Green Bay was resilient because they happened to get one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL back in the nick of time?

Yes, new coaching blood and voices definitely needed to come to Reliant, but if the only lesson learned is ideal coach platitudes and you gotta coach the young guys better, I worry that you are setting the new coaching staff up for failure.

Maybe that is the only lesson that is actually being shared with the public during firing and hiring press conferences. Maybe the Texans are doing an in-depth examination of all their internal processes, not just with coaching. I hope so.

There’s plenty of room for it because the team isn’t that old, and they haven’t had much success, so every football operations thing should be on the table for change.

Here some real lessons learned for the Texans.

These aren’t just Texans lessons, but the team with its very short history relative to the league is an easy illustration of many of these points. You’ve been able to watch the team since the beginning, so you can nod and remember...

1. If you don’t have a quarterback...

There are no curses just poor decision making by the general manager. What if we didn't draft David Carr and took Julius Peppers instead? What if we didn't pass up on the likes of Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers and even Joe Flacco, when we had the opportunity to draft any of them, all QBs who went on to win Super Bowls already.

People say it's hard to find a franchise quarterback but some lucky team usually drafts them and the teams who don't regret passing them up. Or what if after our 2-14 season in 2005 we had went after Drew Brees and Sean Payton instead of Matt Schaub and Gary Kubiak? The Saints went on to win a Super Bowl and have made several playoff appearances since.

It's about the choices being made by the front office. We hit a home run here and there but most of the time we have struck out. All it takes is a few smart moves being made to change the culture of the franchise. Any team can become a consistent winner. It's football and not rocket science.

There is nothing to learn but everything to gain moving forward.

This. It really does only come down to putting a handful of smart moves together at the right time. When the Texans drafted Carr over Peppers it went against everything they had been saying they would do. They talked about building the team right and getting their O/D lines set first but they went right past Julius Peppers and took the pretty-boy face of the franchise QB who was as destined to fail as it gets. They did that after watching Cleveland do the exact same thing with Tim Couch too. Moronic first move and I put that one on McNair solely. He gets a bit of a pass because he was new at this but damn what a mistake to make and then keep making for the next four years.

The real lessons we should take is that one team wins the Super Bowl each year and that it takes a ****load of good management, performance, and luck to win.

If that's all the franchise has learned than they will be terrible forever.

Sad, but they will probably be repeating these mistakes again soon.

They did that after obtaining Boselli, Young, Walker, Payne and McKinney. And they drafted Pitts, Weary and Hill with 1st day picks. They did not go against what they said. They failed in their attempt.

Yep. They tried and it didn't work. That's why you get better management and coaching and try it again. If that doesn't work, keep going.

The Texans couldn't put Peppers on a billboard . No ... you had to make a splash with DC .

Bad qb play trumps all other parts being superior with the rare exception of a once in a generation defense (85 Bears and of course the hallmark Ravens.)

Bad coaching trumps having superior talent when playing playoff teams...and sometimes crappy teams. The difference between a good team and a bad team is often not a lot. How many 1 score losses have we had? You can usually blame those loses on 1 play or 1 bad coaching decision.

Building through the draft only works when you draft the right people.

Not building through the draft means your about to be in cap hell.

Drafting qb's who get haircuts on local tv = qb's who have the wrong set of priorities and should be avoided.

Drafting 1 year wonders who just transitioned from another position, have knee injuries, and can be had in the 2nd round of the supplemental draft likely aren't going to work out the way you want them to (I'm looking at you Tony.)

Trying to outsmart everyone else in the league only works half the time. See Ragone/Henson.

Re-upping players in advance of contract to "build a good repoire" and "quality reputation" among future free agents = no money to sign those free agents.

Roof open or closed someone's going to complain.

I can ALWAYS count of Epsn to go to commercial during the draft when the Texans are on the clock.

Draft commercials asking "what does your team need?" which featured no offensive line and only David Carr were completely and utterly wrong about David Carr.

If we are 0-15 or 15-0 I don't care. Under no circumstances are you allowed to lose to the cowboys. EVER.

>What are the real lessons we should learn from Texans history?

Than Bob McNair suffers from "impulse buy" when it comes to his
head coach.

I wonder if Jerry Jones called him before the hire and told him
that the Texans were "close"...

They should also remember that when the fans and media tell you to draft a RB or QB with the #1 pick in the draft or you will be the "laughing stock of the league", that you can go right ahead and get that Defensive End.

Also, please for the love of all things wonderful, do not try to sign your pick before the draft day. Keep that pick close to the vest and see, until the last second, if anyone wants to trade. Just....please... please?

To paraphrase Thorn's sig...

NFL Life is tough...
...it's much tougher when you're too stupid to sign a stud QB

(or build solid O-lines and D-lines)

I would like to eat lunch with Ed Reed and Tony Boseli. I'd love to hear their stories and how they bamboozled the Houston Texans organization. They were classy Hall of Fame players otherwise.

Repped you instead.

Yeah, I get sick of the "we're cursed" stuff around people who can't take losing. The Texans have nothing to do with any other franchise or sport. This new regime has nothing to do with any recent or old history of the Texans either. Every time a new coaching staff is hired you're getting something completely different. A long lasting winning culture can change with one new HC or one big time franchise player. We just need the right leader who can build us a long term winning culture.

Never march into Russia in the winter....or the poles....or Greenland (it ain't green). If you can't find the Japanese army, they are in Alaska looking for you.

If you want to win in the NFL you have to suck on purpose in the right year, like the Colts, or just get lucky like some other teams with a good QB. It also helps to cheat like Belichek or the Saints.

We need big, fat nose-tackles.

This was a really thoughtful piece. It's one of her better ones - and that's saying A LOT. Each of these points could be it'w own thread; in fact most of them have already spawn multiple threads every year - like #1 for example.

For me, #6 was really interesting. I really wonder how much Uncle Bob really takes a good, hard look at how his org functions and where it might be dysfunctional.
Everyone sees when coaches are hired and fired.
Everyone sees the outcome of the draft.
But is our scouting dept. top notch? How does Uncle Bob determine their "grades"?
Who will make the final calls during the draft? Rick? O'Brien? Who okays Rick's trade moves on draft day?

Don't tell me you've never wondered about this stuff

1. If you don’t have a quarterback, you are a nothing in the NFL.

2. Easy to say you won’t reach for need in the draft as you reach for need in the draft.

3. Head coach is important. But great assistant coaches are essential for winning football, good drafts.

4. The relationship and process between the GM and the coaching staff is key for the draft.

5. Cap management, roster composition is a big part of winning.

6. Look at everything in the organization, not just the easy things, and take responsibility.

Thank you. Been thinking this stuff for a while, since the Kubiak firing presser. And talk post-presser that seemed to put everything on coaching. All that best roster ever talk which seemed to be oblivious. You didn't hear the Giants owner saying that stuff after this season, and he won Super Bowls with his QB.

Interesting that some quotes coming out after the presser are very focused on looking at everything and the roster.

See e.g. this Grantland piece. http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/66538376/

Ultimately it is like anything in life. Easier to say you are going to do something. Harder to implement it.

We will likely not know anything real until games are played. This is going to be the off-season of hype, with so much of everything going to be well O'Brien is going to be non-Kubiak because of X, Y, Z.

And that isn't really the standard. Every coach does their own changes, has their own language, but we won't know squat until we see the roster changes and how it works on the field.

Nice read, thanks.
...
O'Brien will tell you he is a football coach. Smith will tell you he is a general manager. And the separation of church and state is a healthy one in Houston. That is not to say Smith isn't soliciting input, however. "We have a specialist that heads up the football team and a specialist that heads up the personnel and operations," Smith said. "Those two guys have to work together in concert to build your football team. That's' the way we'll continue to do it. I think the balance and the marriage between the two is good. Coaches need to have a say in the personnel. And so do scouts. I do think he knows what good football players look like, what the physical traits and characteristics are that give guys a chance to succeed given how he is going to utilize them. He is good that way."

Ultimately, though, O'Brien was brought to Houston to lead a group of men who lost their way, to salvage a team that bottomed out. Smith thinks O'Brien is the "perfect fit" to do that, in part because he has done it before. And he is going to have help. More tulip buds will be coming up in Houston.

we prob should of picked VY instead of Mario Mario was good at beating bad teams but against elite Tackles he would melt like butter

besides we never went anywhere with Mario

maybe if we drafted VY things might have been different

Yep and it's too bad Rick is making the call that will probably set this franchise back again. 2002 revisited. I wish I had more faith in Rick.

I wish you did too steelb. How would things be different if the leaks that came out about the coaches having too much control over the draft was in fact, a fact? I know folks have called Rick Smith "a snake" for the leaks but how do we know it didn't come from higher above? Someone (don't recall who) posted that Rick Smith wanted T.Y. Hilton and Gary overrode that and they drafted Posey. If that's the case, how many other times did it happen?

I can take the sticks and stones tossed my way if folks wanna call me a Smith homer though that's not the case at all. I am willing to venture forward with an empty cup though. The organization is structured now more conforming to most franchises in regard to the power structure if we're to believe what we've been told. I believe the next two drafts will go a long way to determine who was/is the incompetent party in the war room.

I'm looking forward to May but just as importantly who goes, who stays and FA moves.

It's an exciting time to be a Texans fan. I wanna revelle in it in lieu of pissin' and moanin' about it.

Just me maybe.

No one really knows the answer to this.

We don't even know what offense O'Brien will run. We THINK he will run some flavor of the one that N.E. runs but we don't KNOW that until he rolls it out during OTAs or training camp.

So how will we know, in January, which QB will best fit an offense we won't even get a peek at until May??

Besides, for my money, it's not just the QB, it's the whole package. QB is just one thing out of a whole shopping list of stuff that needs fixing.
  • O-line (two words: Right Tackle)
  • ILB (will Cush be back to form? and even if he is, he needs help.)
  • CB depth (especially if the rumors about him running a lot of nickel are true)
  • DT (we don't have the kind that Romeo has historically liked.
  • RB (Tate is as good as gone and they may send Foster packing too)
