Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans worked out free agent WR Derrick Lewis after practice Wednesday, May 24. Lewis currently plays in the Arena Football League.

http://www.arenafootball.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=3500&ATCLID=238677 He has good size. Although being released earlier from the NFL, hiis performance has thus far put him in rookie of the year status in the Arena League........sometimes this transition is tough translate or extropolate though.

The Texans also worked out free agent FB Robert Holcomb after practice Wednesday, May 24. "We're going to continue looking at backs," Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said. "To be honest, right now we're looking for a fullback type of guy. Robert's a little bit of a tweener. He can play both."

Robert Holcombe did a good job blocking for Eddie George when he played for the Titans. He didn't really do much last year though. I could see him maybe getting signed if Hill isn't doing that great, but it sounds like he's doing pretty good so it's probably just to see what he can do.

Oh well, the Texans need to find gems wherever they can! I'm hoping Q Hill (FB) can stick!

    Houston, again.
Sure seem to be looking for a FB that fits a certain mold. Thought Cook was the one. Mmmm, guess not or maybe they just need more of them for TC.

I think that they are just looking to add competition where they can. They will probably keep Holcomb here until he proves he shouldn't be here and will compete with Cook and Hill. I personally think we have two solid options with Cook and Hill and we don't really need Holcomb, but I wasn't at the practices and I don't know what Kubes is thinking so who knows.

Looks like Kub is looking for TWO solid Texans system FBs:

    [From HoustonTexans.com]

Added insurance: After practice Thursday, Kubiak and several members of the Texans’ scouting department watched free agent Nick Luchey work out with quarterbacks Matt Baker and Quinton Porter.

The 6-2, 267-pound fullback played with the Bengals last season after spending the past two years in Green Bay with assistant head coach/offense Mike Sherman. The former Miami Hurricane was drafted in the fifth round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Bengals.

“I think it’s important that we find a veteran fullback with a little experience in this league,” Kubiak said. “We’re very excited about Jameel Cook, as you guys can see out here. He’s been exceptional, and a leader out here. But we need to get him some help. Those two young kids (rookies Quadtrine Hill and Scott Weaver) have got a chance, but the experience would really help us right now. So we’ll keep looking.” :stirpot:

Why did we let go of Norris then?

I like that every position has it's own version of competition. Holcombe is another veteran leader that can come in and make a difference.

Norris doesn't fit the west coast style offense we will be running. The FB is involved with the passing game in this offense. Norris is more of a smash mouth lead blocker.

I know Robert Holcomb personally. I worked with his mother for a few summers. She works at a daycare and isn't the nicest of ladies, but she would always talk football. I stopped following him after the Titans, but it would be nice to see him stick in Houston. He's a good guy who just works and doesn't show off much.

That Derrick Lewis kid is interesting. He's done good in the AFL here in Austin.

From what I understand they are looking for a short yardage/goal line back who can double as a FB.

Did they think that Moran Norris couldnt fit the bill? Or, are they looking for more of a BIG running back?

Norris had one carry for no yardage in like 5 years here...I don't think he is much of a running threat. He is more like a hybrid Guard without the size.

I sure hope this has not affect on DD's performance. I remember how good George was when he had Neal and how he began to be worse when Neal went elsewhere.

I liked Norris as a bull blocker, but as Vinny pointed out, he was not a productive runner. Furthermore, he did not demonstrate the best of hands either.
