I dunno, but I'm betting Jim Rome and the rest of the left-wing LA sports media crowd make it their personal crusade to have this guy posthumously inducted into the NFL HOF.

That's all you've got this morning, that's downright civil for you Infantrycak. C'mon now, you are so much more entertaining when you are insulting.

Plankton is bemused by your ability to both breathe and post with a single brain cell.

    Better?

    Really,

Jerry Smith doesn't have the numbers to be a HOF.

To suggest that he is deserving of the HOF reeks of the PC crowd at work.

Jerry Smith was a very good/All pro type TE. Not a HOF.

I find it ironic that Smith played the TIGHT END position.

Really? I watched that documentary last night and they showed that several HOF tight ends have inferior numbers to his.

As a matter of fact he held the touchdown record for tight ends for 25 years or so until it was finally broken by Shannon Sharpe.

Impressive because they were playing fewer games during Smith's era and offenses were more run oriented back then. Another thing to consider is he had Billy Kilmer, Sharpe had Elway.

bwahahahahahah!! That's sig-worthy right there!

Hey now, isn't it forum policy (or is that tradition?) to not let cold, hard facts get in the way of a good moral crusade?

OJ Simpson can decapitate people and not a problem to be in the HoF.

But man, if someone happens to love someone of the same sex, ERMAHGERD!!!!

Yeah, check out the HoF TEs who largely overlapped with him:

    Mike Ditka - 5812 yds, 43 TDs.
    John Mackey - 5236 yds, 38 TDs.
    Charlie Sanders - 4817 yds, 31 TDs.
    Jackie Smith - 7918 yds, 40 TDs.

    Jerry Smith - 5496 yds, 60 TDs.

Pretty hard to argue his numbers were inferior.

By the way, that era makes up half the TEs in the HoF.

You've answered this one for people a million times - entertainment.

Usual is boring. Unusual gets noticed.

Exactly. People seem to forget the point of entertainment is to be entertained.

Do some folks have a little red button for immediate butthurt? See subject, PUSH BUTTON. Lather, rinse, repeat.

It's like the remote control does not exist in their lives and they only get one channel on the tv.

Simple concept, y'know? Don't like something on tv, change the channel. Turn it off.

But the Butthurt must be heard!! RAGE RAGE BUTTHURT RAGE RAGE!!!

Amazing that grown men could be so friggin' sensitive.

I don't know a whole lot about this guy, but based on the numbers presented in this thread, I'd have to disagree with you. You add that to the fact that he played in a run oriented era with a QB that wasn't all that great, well I think there is a very strong case for this guy. I'm basing this mainly off of the information presented in this thread though.

Well, it sounds like he was very good at his job and he unfortunately died young due to AIDS (did he die around the same time as Freddy Mercury? Honest question here), so there's a compelling bit there. Being gay in the NFL back then (especially compared to now, though there are still quite a lot of homophobic players) provides another angle that they could talk about, plus just a chance to talk about the Redskins, who are a large fanbase.

There are a lot of reasons that they decided to do A Football Life about him, not merely that he was gay.
