Here's a recap of what Zierlein and John Harris talked about in the podcast today. I'll try doing a recap of every one since some people here may not have the time to listen to a 25 minute podcast. Very good info that they talk about

    - Talks about the 5th WR battle. Says AJ, Walter, McCardell, and Jacoby Jones are locks to make the roster. Andre Davis, Jerome Mathis, and Bethel Johnson will compete for the last spot. Says Rick Smith doesn't want specialists, he want's the 5th WR to be a receiver not just a kick returner. Harris says Mathis has looked good in recent passes.

    - Bryan Pittman's job may be in jeopardy because his only role is that of a long snapper. Joel Driesen (sp?) may take the spot because he can be used as an emergency tight end.

    - Z says the DB and the defense in general is getting the best of the wide receivers during practice. Questions whether Kevin Walter can be the #2 WR and whether McCardell can take the #2 spot if Walter doesn't cut it. Harris says Owen Daniels is going to be the #2 target regardless of who the 2nd wideout is. Z says it's a joke when Daniels goes against the defense. The safeties and linebackers can't cover him.

    - Harris' impression of Okoye is that he's adjusting to the NFL game. He has to quit thinking too much and just start to react. He's a little worried about Okoye against the run but says he creates a pass rush. He also says that that's where Travis Johnson comes in (against the run) and maybe that will create a 3-tackle rotation. Johnson has been one of the most improved players in camp. Z is most impressed with N.D. Kalu and says he's the best pass rusher on this team and feels he can get 7.5 - 8.5 sacks.

    - Z says he doesn't think anyone beats Petey Faggins out for the #2 this year but Fred Bennett is coming along quickly and Bennett may be the #2 CB next year. Harris says he's been less concerned with Faggins and more with Dunta. Says Dunta has been beat a few times in camp.

    - Harris likes C.C. Brown because he hits hard. Says Brendan Harrison will be the FS down the road. Dexter Wynn has played well in camp and may be 5th or 6th corner but also plays special teams. Z says Dexter McLeon probably won't make team. CBs will be Dunta, Petey, Bennett, Fletcher, Wynn. Safeties will be Von Hutchins, CC Brown, Brandon Harrison and Glenn Earl.

    - Rick Smith is much more involved as a GM than that of the Broncos. Kubiak has a lot of say so since he was here first. Z says Smith doesn't back down from his thoughts to the coach if he disagrees with him which is important.

I think we might keep 6 wr's. I hope B.J and Mathis both make the squad.

Holy cow, it sounds like we're becoming a good team to me. Why is September so far away?

I also heard Zgonia is a good long snapper, and may make the squad due to his dual role, thus eliminating pittman

I have heard the same too.

I think we either keep 6 WR's or 4 Rb's one or the other, but probably not both.

I'm not sure Mccardell is a lock at his age and his nagging injury, but he certainly has the inside track at a spot.

Given the camp Mathis has had so far, he has the inside track to #5 imo. Because he is so injury prone though, I wonder if they might carry a 6th that can also return kicks as insurance against the Mathis Hammy. If so, I think Andre Davis has the inside track on that spot.

Ridiculous. That statement discounts everything the guy says.

I agree with a lot of what he said, but this part struck me as odd too...

Dunta is by far our best DB...

Yeah...I wasn't impressed that much by John Harris. It seems like he would state his opinion then Z would counter it and Harris would immediately say "I agree completely". Flip-flopper.

I agree. Every practice I've been to Dunta has shut down practically every ball thrown his way. He and Dre have had an outstanding battle this camp. It's been a joy to watch.:)

Faggins on the other hand has been burned quite a bit. Discount the fact that I do not know what was called on the field, but he's been the one trailing on several balls across the middle as well as crossing routes.

    Just my observation's from camp.:cowboy1:

Yea this Haris guy went goofey on us and lost his some cred with his comments about Dunta, who's having maybe his best camp to date from what everyone (except for him apparently) has said.
He was however more upbeat about our LB corp than Z was and said its got better speed than its ever had and was our best group so far.

Ya, that Harris comment about Dunta came off weird to me too. I was like huh? Because everything else I have heard/read said he has been having his best camp. Besides that, EVERY cb who has ever played has been "beat a few times in camp."

What does a few times mean? I'm sure every DB in the NFL (even Champ Bailey) has been beat a few times in their camp so far. If he's getting beat excessively, that's one thing, but everything I've read has suggested he's having his best camp ever.

Encouraging notes on Okoye and TJ. You can't expect Okoye to be totally on from the beginning, but it's good to hear he's adapting.

Also encouraging notes on Daniels. It'll be nice to have one of them bad TEs.

I think overall what encourages me most is the comments on our rookies. Is it possible we could have as successful a rookie class as we did last year?

Mathis looked good at the practice we checked out last Saturday. I think he makes the squad if he stays healthy.

Good to hear about OD. I like offenses that utilize the TE a lot. A good one can really give defenses fits, because these guys can be hard to bring down once they get going.

I'm really glad to hear that TJ has stepped it up. He's got the potential to be a force on the line, and it appears that he's responding to this staff. Our d-line has a lot of work ahead of it, but it looks like it's coming together.

I like the dynamic between Rick Smith and Kubiak, too. We've had a problem of too many yes-men, along with compartmentalized power in the FO. It sounds like these heated discussions will produce more positive results by having open communication allowing the best ideas to surface.

The comment on D.Rob was just dumb, but everyone's entitled to foot-in-mouth disease every once in awhile.

I think my favorite part of the entire podcast was when Z said he thinks ND Kalu has a chance to rack up 7.5-8.5 sacks. I'll be ecstatic if he does.

Maybe I'm not involved in professional football in any capacity and maybe I've never built a team. I have watched a lot of football in my time though and I am nervous about fiddling around with a long snapper who gets the job done. It seems like when teams tinker with something that works problems come up.

I'd prefer a long snapper who does one thing well to a long snapper who can also play a little TE but might fudge a snap. Pretty much every player we have can play a little TE with the possible exception of Kris Brown and Chad Stanley.

Maybe it works out fine but it makes me nervous.

On the other hand if he gets more sacks than you know who (as Z implies by saying Kalu is the teams best pass rusher) I will certainly be disappointed.

I don't think McCardell is a lock to make the team.

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way. Pittman's meaning and purpose in life is to long snap. I don't know about those other guys, but it scares you to go from one area that you know you are rock solid in, to something that is a question mark. Reminds me of all the random dudes we got to fill in at the return position last year.
