The offseason is long. So here's a long interview with Keith Weiland from over at HPF.com

Here's an interview we did about salary cap stuff and key Texans contracts. Some of this has been talked about in different places on TT and over at HT.com's MB, but I figured it would be nice to put it in one place:

FanHouse: NFL Salary Cap and Contract Information: Houston Texans

Keith rocks. All hail Keith!

$25 million in cap room, but no one spend it on. Kinda sad. :(

This would have never happened to Charley Casserly...

Yup. Ol Cass would have addressed our O line and CB situation by signing Victor Reilly to a 10mill plus a year deal and giving Buchanon a 15 mill a year contract.

I have been trying to get Keith and others to nail down exactly where the $25 million cap space number comes from. If you look at Keith's projection on the HPF web site he shows $116m for each NFL team and the Texans at $35,252,215 after subtracting top 51 and dead $ ($116m - $80,747,785 = $35,252,215m). Mario's contract may be adjusted but that is not done yet. As I see it, we have $35m apprx. Besides as Keith agreed with me by email, Mario's extension if done can be pro-rated and does not have to hit 100% this year. The ten million dollar difference is significant especially when you need a starting CB.

I just can't wait to see what happens in FA and the draft. I think Rick and Gary will do great this year again. Green is by far my biggest question mark, I have absolutely no gut feeling either way what they will do with him.

Very good read, I got a little lost with some of Weavers contract,so I had to do read that section again. I think we keep him this year.

Trufant and Lance Briggs are my dream selections. People just see Samuel or Briggs and say no way. I say WAY! We have the money to sign Briggs for example. Keith of HPF that Stephaine interviewed has agreed that we can sign him with out going into cap hell. But then the Ahman Green monster raises it's head. What happens if you sign Briggs and he gets hurt? or has an off year? Use caution but if you can sign a perennial pro bowler at a position (OLB) that you need, why not? We put some one dollar bills in Mario's pockets two years ago and most thought we may have gotten a bad deal. That worked out ok. Not comparing a young Mario to Briggs but sometimes you have to take a chance. A high pass into the end zone for AJ to go up and get.

I've heard that he and Morlon Greenwood are expected to restructure.

I hope they do, but doubt that they will. They have no real reason to, they hold all the cards.

The path to cap hell once again...go re-read the bloody article.

Thanks Tc & Keith. I depend on you Keith for the information. I have niether the time nor desire to be a capologist. I'm overjoyed someone competent in our community does.

3TP, if the Texans could sign Briggs, keep their own free agents that they want and pay the drafted guys while remaining under the cap, you would not do so?

Wanting to do so was not his point. The point was that the article was completely against that. Saying the Texans would probably NOT sign a big name guy which IMO is smart.

I know you were not asking me but I will answer anyway, no. I wouldnt sign him because the return on top teir FA's is pretty much always in the negative. We may not get ourselves into "cap hell " per say but that move would tie our hands a bit when we want to resign our own players in the future. Next year we are going to have to resign Demeco and Winston and they wont exactly be cheap, particularly Demeco.

Build through the draft and supliment in FA. That is the smartest way to put talent on the team and keep it.
