I thought it would be fun to go through the lineup and use the site pro football focus(a stats heavy site) to see where our guys ranked last year.

    First the Offense

    QB: Schaub:7
    RB: Brown: 49, Slaton: 50,
    FB: Leach: 27
    TE: Dreesen: 22, Daniels: 23
    OT: Winston: 15, Brown: 60
    OG: White: 41, Briesel: 44, Caldwell: 46, Studdard: 71
    OC: Myers: 8
    WR: Johnson: 5, Jones: 27, Anderson: 42, Walter: 77

    Initial Thoughts
The way to read this is to use the following calculation: for single play positions use out of 32(ie Schaub was 7/32) since only one is typically used per team at a time. At others, use the calculation for double positions(ie OG, OT, etc ) out of 64.

First it is clear how amazing OD really was. Even with only half a season he was the #23 rated TE. Had he played a full season, he would have been top 10 for sure.

Clearly we had RB struggles, no need to really address that. OT does stand out. I remember some people complaining about Winston and praising Brown. Math says that Winston was solid starting OT wheras Brown was a borderline starter.

Leach also was rated pretty low. He is a borderline starter, but his blocking didnt hold up to well according to the stats. Perhaps Casey should get some looks there.

OGs should not come as a surprise. We had borderline starters in White Briesel, and Caldwell(thought to be fair, not got the chance to start the whole year). Of course everyone's opinion that Studdard looked bad is validated. He did not play at a starters level.

I was stunned by the Myers 8 rating. According to the Math he was MUCH better than people gave him credit. Maybe playing with Studdard pulled him down.

WR: Again, AJ is a stud and JJ did great. Anderson was our 3rd or 4th down target and Walter got lost in the mix. He will get even more lost when OD comes back.

Next post will be the Defense.

Why isn't Andre Johnson numero uno? He IS the best damn receiver in this league! :aggressive:

And now we look at Defense

    DE: Williams: 8, Barwin: 60, Smith: 62
    DT: Zgonia: 31, Cody: 69, Okoye: 74
    OLB: Cush:3, Diles: 10,
    MLB: Ryans: 25
    CB: Reeves: 41, Quin: 74, Robinson: 98
    S: Pollard: 16, Wilson: 41, Barber: 50, Busing 71

Interestingly enough we see Barwin coming in as the #2 DE over Smith. With a full off season, I can see Barwin starting opposite Mario.

If there is a sadder stat than this, I don't know it. The best DT we had was a 39 year old who was not on our team at the beginning of the season. Even when using the 2 DT logic(of 64), Okoye falls out of the starter list. Even Cody does. Last season we had 1 starting level DT.

How did our D look so good? Well take a look at our OLB: Cush at #3 and Mr. Underrated Diles at 10. Ryans drops becuase he had these two guys being stellar, but quiet frankly our LB corp saved our DTs this year.

And now the reason why DR was not given any kind of offer. He was 98. So, he was out of the top 64 and even out of the top 96 (nickle corners from 65-96). In essence, DR was a DIME CB commanding Top 5 starter money. We definitely need to draft a corner in the draft and probably sign another one off the street.

Pollard was the man at saftey, and remember he was here the whole season, so with a full season, he likely would have been top 10. Wilson is solid, when healthy.

Ok, there you go. Lets get a discussion going talking about what this means in terms of drafting and refining our lineups.

It has to do with numbers. He had a ton of targets and that resulted in lots of yards. But he trailed in total tds, he does not run end arounds (nor should he), and he is not the best blocker at his position. According to the math Jackson was better since he is a better blocker, had more tds in fewer targets, and had a higher yards/rec

Again, think larger picture in terms of high starter, mid starter, low starter, and depth. I think this is the value of this kind of analysis.

And yeah, I thought AJ was #1 too!

Thanks for posting this, I need to do more research instead of going off on stats and stuff.

Anyways, I think the area of need for us is at CB, OG, OC, RB, DT, and S but CB and interior linemen are my top areas of need for us come draft day.

Interesting and likely bogus. PFF's numbers are hardly the gospel. Describing their rankings as dubious would be kind.

So taking this thingy of yours at face value....wouldn't every one agree according to this set of numbers....the weakest links on offense in terms of Talent are at Oh My Gosh....guard !!!

What a shocker. Wake me when the rest of the room catches up.

And as far as Myers is concerned...as long as the DT wasn't too big or too talented, I agree, He's was a stud. If Myers was worth warm spit, the guards wouldn't have struggled they way they did last year. He was the vet and he was calling out all of the adjustments. He was at the core of responsibility for the non exsistant rushing attack. He was almost stealing money last year.

If the way a site calculates does not put AJ at #1, they need to change how they calculate...
