I like Mario, but I am sick of the injury excuses. If he can't make plays, get someone in there who can and get Mario healthy so he can make plays. I understand injuries but if your injured and can't contribute, get off the field.

Good LTs constantly just own him and don't give me the double team BS. He is rarely doubleteamed. That is just an urban myth. Dude has to start doing something.

Just make some damn plays or get off the field. You are hurting the team, Mario.

Agreed. Mario has had a very disappointing season so matter how many excuses people try to make for him. He has not played like an elite level DE or even a franchise DE this year. He needs to be called out by the coaching staff either in the locker room or publically. I don't care if he gets embarrassed of mad or angry, but there needs to be a fire lit under his ass big time. He hasn't played anywhere close to the level of some of the other top level DE's this season.

Did you ever stop to think that an injured Mario is still better than whatever they could put out there in his place? That's the reality that the coaching staff faces. Everyone can see that Mario is not himself, coaches included. But he still does more than any DE you'd put out there on this team, Antonio W. Smith included.

It's a crappy situation for the team and for Mario.

I am far from an expert but it sure seems when I watch Mario that he is very predictable in his moves. He is so strong and quick that he can still get by many LTs, but I am never surprised by any of his moves the way that I am when I watch guys like Freeney, Mathis, Peppers, etc. They just know how to fake out opposing tackles.

Also, I don't think I have ever seen Mario make an inside move. It seems almost everytime he tries to go flying outside the tackles, flailing his arms like a mad man, and just gets pushed to the outside of the QB. The smart LTs just deflect his momentum away from the play.

Now by no means am I hating on Mario. I think he is a very good player, but I have not been happy with what I have seen this year in his 4th NFL season. The guy should be more creative by now, and I feel like we should be seeing more from him especially in big games.

    did we blitz any yeserday?

It looked to me, like we decided to dare Vince to beat us with his legs, by dropping back into coverage

exactly. very sound philosophy against vince.

    /sarcasm off

as for mario, if he sucks because he is injured then get someone else in there. i think many other players could have as much impact if they had as many snaps as Mario. and then you get the benefit of letting Mario heal.

its just getting old watching him run himself out of a play, do the same thing over and over, and make no impact.

Speaking of poor DE play, did anyone notice how much playing time Barwin got yesterday?

Mario is not a quick twitch athlete so he can't outquick anyone. He has excellent speed for his size, but he has to rely on brute strength to simply overpower the tackle. Right now, I think that is hard for him, and he has nothing else to fall back on. He isn't a Freeny or a Mathis type player. In fact, I don't think he will ever be truly elite as a pass rusher - I think he will be good again - but not one of those super feared elite pass rushers.

In his defense, he plays the run far better than a Freeny or a Mathis does and it could be argued that when healthy he is a better overall player. But, right now he is no better than a run of the mill DE imho.

I did not see him very much. And I was looking. I saw him get held on one of VY's runs, but that is about it.

Seems like a 6'7'' 290 beast with speed could find it within himself to get angry 1 play a game and push 6 guys over if he had to.

    Seems like it anyway.

For all the talk of being "defensive player of the year" and elite DE pre-season he has fallen extremely short. AND it's hurting the team because that's exactly what they need to have such an aggressive standpoint on D.

I won't bother listing anymore reasons why he isn't up to snuff because after so many games....it's just not up to snuff.

That's because he lines up so far outside and takes that long loop around to the backend of the play. Mario doesn't need to be doubled 'cause he takes himself out of plays.

Mario is the fastest guy into the backfield that has very little impact that I've ever seen. He's 12 yards deep at the blink of an eye. Problem is that he's run 5 yards past the play.

And he is ALWAYS running to the outside. I never see an inside move from him. I just don't understand it. Surely the coaches see this...

That's exactly what he was doing Monday night... whenever they ran his way, he was already outside that all the runner had to do was just go inside and he was past him..

So he is #3 in QB hits, #4 in QB pressures and T-5th in penalties by opposing OL, but because he isn't getting sacks we should bench him?

Never mind, I forgot - we lost the game so everyone now sucks.

he isn't getting the job done. if you think he is that is fine. coming close is what is wrong with this franchise. moral victories and almost is the soup de jour around here.

my thing is he isn't getting the job done. other people are and aren't just coming close, they are getting sacks around the league.

    i never said mario sucks.

I said jack about moral victories and almost. His job is DE and is to affect the QB's play. They don't call them "All that matters is sacking the QB, screw the run, if you don't sack you fail artists." He is a DE. There are a hand full of guys who have more consistently been affecting QB's this year than Mario and none or maybe one is as good against the run. You like to "keep it real" well then try looking at everything instead of just one stat. That's at less than 100%.

It's not about "moral victories" with Mario. When he was putting up 12 and
13 sacks the last couple years, people like you were quiet with this kind of talk.
Now that he has an obvious injury, and STILL giving everything he's got to help
this team, insinuate he's a scrub. The fact still remains, he'd be hurting this
team MUCH more than he's helping, IF he were to sit out his injury. There's
no one on that bench to replace his production EVEN WHILE he's obviously
injured. He was still our best DE during his rookie year, while playing the
entire season with plantar fasciitis. Lay off the dude, and look at what's
    REALLY hurting the team.

And what is that? We have 5 losses. 4 have come when we had the opportunity to go to OT under 1 min. Typical overtime odds are darn near 50/50. If this is a 7-3 team, every other play disappears. The coaching, Dunta, Mario, whatever. 4 friggin' plays - 2 of which were kicks and one where they had already scored the TD and had it taken away.

Screw it. I am just tired of the most recent result reaction. We win - whohoo SB. We lose, fire everyone and let's act like pro-bowl players aren't contributing. Both are wrong. Oh and, hardly anyone in Houston gives a crap about Schaub. I have sat at every Texan game. The next time will be the first time I hear a good thing about him. I can't believe I sat through 5 years of HWWNBN and Houston fans seemingly find little difference.
