Rd.1 David Long CB Michigan- This dude has the ability to play inside or outside. I like him before the Combine and after talking with Wolverine Fan I looked at him more seriously as a possible pick at 23. It doesn't surprise me that he tore up the combine. Athletically he checks all of the boxes and he has the uncanny ability to mirror routes and know when a pass is coming his way and get a hand in to breakup passes.

Rd.2 Dexter Lawrence DT Clemson- This guy moves so well for a guy his size. He's not just a run stopper, he can get penetration up the middle that the Texans defense was so sorely missing last season. The criticisms of Lawrence remind me of the ones they made about Wilfork when he was coming out. Lawrence is going to be a long time starter in the NFL.

Rd.2 Kaleb McGary OT Washington- Huge mountain of a man with great feet and surprising quickness. Has to improve is hand placement and not play so upright but he's a 10 yr starter in the NFL.

Rd.3 Jamel Dean CB Auburn- One of the most talented CB's in this draft, Dean is a 1st rd pick without his injury history ACL/Meniscus in high school. Another knee injury at Auburn, but has stayed healthy and produced well the last 2 yrs.

Trade Alert- The Texans trade their 2019 5th and 2020 3rd to the Patriots for the Pats 4th rd pick.

Rd. 4 Antione Wesley WR Tx Tech- At 6'4.5 and 206 Wesley has great quickness in and out of his breaks. He's got the high and leaping ability to be a major RZ weapon and enough speed to stretch a defense. The only reason he falls this far is because he needs to add weight and strength, which he should be able to do with a NFL S&C program. Dude is very talented.

Rd. 6 Kendall Sheffield CB- Ohio St. Fastest CB in the draft. Sheffield has the ability to be a starter some day and only falls this far due to a torn pec. Good news is he should be healthy by the start of the regular season. Sheffield is very talented and a mold of clay for a good DB coach to work with.

RD.7 Darwin Thompson RB Utah St.- Thompson is short 5'8 but a strong short yardage bull. at 210 lbs he's like tackling a bowling ball. He also can catch the ball out of the backfield and will be a really good ST's contributor. He's got great quickness.

You ask what? Steel B with only 1 OL in his mock, has he gone crazy? Nope, I have Gaine signing Trent Brown in FA. An ol of Brown/Rankin/Martin/Fulton/McGary with Kelemete/Mancz/Henderson/Davenport should be solid enough to protect Watson and get the offense where it needs to be particularly with Fuller coming back and adding Wesley.

    Thoughts?

3 rookie CBs? That might look good in 2020, but shaky for a playoff contender. If you're signing Trent Brown, then McGary at RT makes sense. I was thinking edge rusher in the 2nd. But considering that the Texans play run heavy Jags, Titans, and the Colts emerging rushing attack twice, Lawrence makes sense.

Long is a day one starter. A CB set of Long/JoJo/ Colvin is a massive upgrade.

Dean also has the ability to start early and if he can, then you can move JoJo to the slot.

Sheffield is BPA wildcard and talent isn't his issue. You can't go wrong taking a Ohio St. CB that can run. If you get lucky he can play this yr like Dean. If he can't atleasat you have the depth and talented competition that was lacking at the CB position last year. With Sheffield's speed he also should be a quality ST's guy.

I really like McGary's temperament and how he likes to drive people into the ground. He's like Risner without the positional versatility. Which is why he should be there at 54/55.

Lawrence as I said reminds me of a young Wilfork. He is really good against the run and can provide push that the defense is currently lacking up the middle. Plus This would allow Reader to move out to DE and really stengthen the DL. You would also have great depth.

Lawrence and Reader are 2 down players. You may be overestimating their impact. And Joseph and Colvin were both with the team last year. Joseph will be a year older. Colvin was so bad he couldn’t get on the field. It would take a rookie Deion Sanders to make that a massive upgrade.

I don’t have a lot of questions about the players individually. Just that how they look on the Texans roster in total seems questionable in terms of immediate contributions. As I said, it would probably look much better a year down the road.

They need to add young athletic CB's, BOB said this himself. One of these 3 guys are going to be a major upgrade at CB. Odds are possibly 2 will be successful and if you get lucky all 3 will be major contributors by 2020. Gaine values ST's and these guys will help with that.

I like Lawrence and think he could be more than 2 down player. He's got unreal athletic ability for a man his size.

I would swap Lawrence and Long. Lawrence is a freak and would have a lot more hype if not for the failed test. No way he lasts until our 2nd round pick. Meanwhile, Long is a tad undersized so he's not going to get 1st round looks. He's likely to be available in the 2nd round. I love both picks though.

McGary - I'm hot and cold on him. He has all the attributes you want for a RT except he's very tall and has T-Rex arms. I don't like that combo. I prefer shorter OT's with longer arms (why I loved Dion Dawkins). They're more compact with better balance. McGary, as a taller guy with short arms, is going to struggle handling speed rushes on the edge.

Dean - He's talented but has pretty big medical flags and just one year as a starter. I know 'big CBs' are the thing right now but I will always prefer coverage skills over size. Dean is a ball of clay right now. A very enticing one, but the injuries and lack of experience/technique are worrisome.

Wesley - I think he's okay. Not super excited about him like some others on this board are. If going for a mid-round outside guy I would much rather go after Stanley Morgan. He's a very underrated athlete and catches everything in his vicinity. Looks like a poor man's Andre.

Sheffield - He's extremely talented but very raw. He's a track athlete trying to play football right now. Honestly, I think the injury helps him because teams will have to take it slow with him now. I'd be surprised if he's still available this late but if so I'd definitely take a stab at him.

Thompson - Don't know much about him. Late round RB's are like throwing darts though.

Be very intrigued to see your post combine effort WolverineFan. Always great, insightful commentary.

I just like the flow and effort Steelbtexan puts into it, feel his passion and energy.

I’m not up on Long myself not really a big 10 corner guy, more like trench guys.

Hard to imagine Clemson has so many DL making it in the NFL in one draft, wow.

Still mad about passing on Dawkins and going Cunningham. Hard to really figure what they’re looking for in an offensive tackle.

Ok guys, this was a tough draft but I realized how important it would be to make up in the draft what the Texans decided not to do in FA or with possible trades. I think I got several answers for those areas of need and some depth to build with in the future.

    Your Picks:
Round 2 Pick 9 (DEN): Dillard, Andre, OT/OT, Washington State (A+)
Round 2 Pick 23: McCoy, Erik, OG/C, Texas AM (A+)
Round 2 Pick 24 (N.E.): Jacobs, Josh, RB, Alabama (A+)
Round 3 Pick 10 (HOU): Johnson, Isaiah, CB, Houston (A+)
Round 3 Pick 25 (IND): Butler, Hakeem, WR, Iowa State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 5 (T.B.): Hyatt, Mitch, OT, Clemson (A+)
Round 4 Pick 11 (DEN): Oliver, Josh, TE, San Jose State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 16 (G.B.): Jelks, Jalen, DE, Oregon (A+)
Round 5 Pick 4 (DET): Crosby, Maxx, DE, Eastern Michigan (A+)
Round 5 Pick 11 (CINN): Higdon, Karan, RB, Michigan (A+)
Round 5 Pick 18 (DEN): Fields, Mark, CB, Clemson (A+)
Round 5 Pick 23: Rypien, Brett, QB, Boise State (A+)
Round 6 Pick 10 (CINN): Kaufusi, Corbin, DE, Brigham Young (A+)
Round 6 Pick 22: Miller, Shareef, DE, Penn State (A+)
Round 6 Pick 23 (OAK): Gant, Malik, FS/SS, Marshall (A+)
Round 7 Pick 4 (OAK): Hill, Trysten, DT, Central Florida (A+)
Round 7 Pick 9 (CINN): Ferguson, Jazz, WR, Northwestern State (A+)
Round 7 Pick 23: Crawford, Xavier, CB, Central Michigan (A+)

I managed to keep 4 original picks while parlaying the other 3 original picks into a whopping 14 extra picks. LOL!!!! Hey Cal, Gaine and OB....this is how you get shite done when you really want to win through rebuilding!!!!!!

Hey guys, you need OL, I got you:
    LT- Dillard
    OC- McCoy
    RT- Hyatt

You need a TE, I got:
    TE- Oliver

You need a RB, I got:
    RB- Jacobs
    RB- Higdon

You need a WR, I got not only one but two:
    WR- Butler
    WR- Ferguson

You need a developmental QB, I got:
    QB- Rypien

You need a CB or two, I got us three:
    CB- Johnson
    CB- Fields
    CB- Crawford

You need a SS/FS, I got you a two for one:
    SS/FS- Gant

You need a few DE/EDGE guys....how about 4 pieces RC:
    DE- Jelks
    DE- Crosby
    EDGE- Kaufusi
    EDGE- Miller

You need another DT, I got you:
    DT- Hill

There you go Cal, Gaine and OB.....you refuse to build through FA or trades and see the draft as the best opportunity to groom a team in the vision you have, then mutha ducking, TA DA!!!!!
