The 49ers are in the process of granting veteran cornerback Shawntae Spencer permission to seek a trade, sources told Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

Spencer, 30, an eight-year veteran, does not appear to fit into the 49ers' plans after he ended the season as the No. 5 cornerback. Spencer did not suit up for either of the 49ers' two playoff games as one of the team's active 46 players.

Spencer is scheduled to make $3.3 million, including a $100,000 workout bonus, a sum of money the 49ers do not appear likely to commit to him in 2012.

Wonder what happened to him this year? He started almost every season until this one. Wouldn't be surprised if we try and trade for him though since Vance Joseph used to coach him.

Looks like it would cost the 49ers 1 million to cut or trade him:

I imagine they would give him away for a 7th if someone wanted to pick up his deal. I don't know why a team would as it seems the 49ers will be forced to cut him either way. Might as well let him get cut, then pick him up for cheap in free agency.

They expect to get something of value for a guy that they wouldn't even let wear a uniform on game day?

he's a tall corner that doesn't turn and run all that well. Flipping your hips is easier for the short guys. He's getting old...I'd stay away from him.
