Matt Ryan has signed a 72 million dollar contract with 35 million of it being guaranteed. Largest contract ever for a rookie.

    From ESPN.com.

What in the world is wrong with Arthur Blank? He's a disgrace to owners out there. Long signed a contract that was almost 20 million dollars smaller. I didn't even think that Matt Ryan was worth the third pick in the NFL but I most certainly do not think he's worthy of a 72 million dollar contract. Blank seems to think that people will come to the games if they have a new face at QB. I don't agree. Football fans in Atlanta are not as dumb as most think. If he had selected Glenn Dorsey... now he could have sold a whole bunch of tickets. Everyone in SEC country loves him.

I'd opt out of the CBA if I were an owner too. I get where they're coming from. Nutty. Not really because I don't understand the CBA but the point remains that nutty contracts would make me opt out for a guy who hasn't played a down in the NFL.

Good god almighty. Ryan Leaf threw his last pass in the NFL only seven years ago, so soon do these bone headed owners forget?

When Matt Ryan gets hurt his only physical therapy is to count all that money he just stole from the Falcons.

I dont care how good he becomes(if he does) thats alot of jack.

    Wow...

No real response really, just wow. That is a whole hunk of cash put down right there.

I guess they're really gunning for him being starting QB, by getting him to sign by intoxicating him with the fresh scent of newly minted notes.

I feel sorry for the next team that drafts a high round QB in 2009 or so

This has to be why the owners opted out....

and this has to be a common ground between the owners and the players association. Something HAS to be done about rookie contracts.....it's reached the point of stupidity........72 MILLION DOLLARS FOR A ROOKIE QB! (who was in a QB draft who many felt that although deep, didn't have the "ringer" in it) God forbid, if we're ever in that position again, I say pass....and trade down, rather take my shot with a QB who might be a little less talented, but a QB I can afford to build around.

Holy moly. That's outrageous. The only QBs who are worth that much (in NFL terms) are Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. That's an insane amount of money for a rookie. The NFL has to do what the NBA does and have a slotting system. I think the NBA determines the amount of money you can spend on a rookie on where you're drafting.

Ryan signed a 6 year deal. Long's contract was only for 5 years.

I thought #1 pick LT Long "only" got 'bout 30 M guaranteed ?
If so this is very unusual for the #3 to get in excess of 10% more than the
    #1, even if he's a QB.

not that unusual for a QB to get more money than the other position players around him (drafted) I don't think.

I dunno, give me an example of any QB not taken #1 getting more than
the #1 pick in their Draft (besides this year) in guaranteed money ?
If I'm not mistaken, Mario got more than VY in 2006 even though it was just marginally ?
