I love it! 20 minutes of absolutely nothing! "We want guys who can play." So there you have it. We know exactly who they're drafting now!

I feel very confident going into any draft with the current regime. The guys are straight up prepared. Let's get into that war room and grab some new Battle Red Soldiers! Can't wait!

If anyone expected any info other than spin, you have never listened to a pre-draft speech of either Smith or Kubiak. I can just hear Smith saying, "Well we like that Mathews kid but we will draft a CB and hope a RB is there later." San Diego then breathes a huge sigh of relief and cancels the call to trade up with us.

I know, right. I wasn't really expecting much anyways. He basically says the same thing every year.

Hells yeah!! I'm gettin pumped. I think there's going to be a lot of action in this years draft. A draft that has the deepest talent I've seenin quite some time.

Thought I'd pass along the tidbits that were released from McClain, Texans Chick, etc on twitter. Well for those who missed it.
    -------------------------------------------------------
    HoustonTexans

Texans GM Rick Smith says that from a philosophical standpoint, a 1st-rd draft pick should be a starter: "That should be the expectation."

    HoustonTexans

Smith: "If u can add a physical presence, but also playmakers- guys who can make plays with the ball in their hands-...

    HoustonTexans

... that's how you win in this league."

    HoustonTexans

Smith says team is always open to possibility of trading down in draft, but feels that they'll get a good player if they stay at 20

    StephStradley

#Texans GM Rick Smith: "On the phone talking to teams about the potential" of moving out of 20. Have a history of that.

    McClain_on_NFL

At Rick smith predraft news conference he said he wants playmakers, guys who want ball n their hands.

    McClain_on_NFL

I'm feeling better bout my Ryan mathews prediction.

    McClain_on_NFL

He said they got tougher on defense last season with smith, Cushing, pollard and Quinn.

    StephStradley

#Texans GM Rick Smith "There are ideal physical characteristics " for a RB. Then you look to how far they are different from ideal.

    McClain_on_NFL

Kubiak says they want to get tougher on offense and it starts with running game.

    HoustonTexans

Smith:"From an overall standpoint of the type of players we're looking for, we havent changed philosophically because Alex (Gibbs) is gone."

    McClain_on_NFL

Smith said u hit home run if u r able to fill needs with your highest rated players on board.

    StephStradley

GM Rick Smith "Character has always been important for us." Believe as a group, high character, hard workers execute better.

    HoustonTexans

Smith on good CB traits: "Speed, his hips, how well he transitions, does he get stuck coming out of a break, playing the ball downfield..."

    HoustonTexans

Smith: "There are a lot of undersized DEs/OLBs. We saw that last year, we see that again this year." Product of college FB schemes

    HoustonTexans

Smith on prospective NTs: "Can he anchor? Can he stay on his feet and maintain the integrity of the defense from a gap standpoint?"

    HoustonTexans

Smith on new draft format: "I like the fact that you get to regroup a couple times after the 1st round.. I think itÂ’s great for our league."

    StephStradley

Texans GM Rick Smith: Arian Foster "flashes of ability" Dodged talking about Slaton's health. Said all #Texans backs "have potential."

    McClain_on_NFL

I see mock drafts around the country having the Texans taking different positions. I think it's Mathews or McCourty. One solves a big need.

    McClain_on_NFL

No way theTexans draft an offensive lineman in the first round. I don't see them selecting one in the first four rounds. Maybe an OT or C/G.

    McClain_on_NFL

If the GM says they're looking for playmakers, guys who want the ball in their hands, that means RB and CB when you have those needs.

Sorry, what worked for the Jets?

Are you talking about Sanchize? He was pretty bad last year. His season was far worse than Dan O's for the Lions and everyone here thinks Dan O is horrible.

That Jets team won on their running game and defense, despite Sanchez.

He had a couple very rough games, but for the most part played decent football. They didn't feel that Kellen was going to be their QB of the future and they got the guy that was. Proactive.

And I don't think Dan is horrible....people focus on one play of him running out of the back of the end zone. Other than that, he was a decent player on a team full of scrubs.

Good ol McChunks. What a bonehead

I don't. I actually think he has the potential to be pretty good. He's got a stronger arm than Schaub, but hasn't quite learned the nuances of our scheme yet. However, I expect much better play from him this pre-season. Otherwise, I might change my position.

True the team won on the backs of the defense and the leagues best rush attack, but I think Sanchez made plays when he had to. Though I do admit he had a bit of a rough stretch until he figured out he didn't need to be the star in the offense like at USC.

Far as Dan goes. I think he still has decent upside and can turn out to be a nice backup here.

That means Iupati and Earl Thomas are not possible. Safe is one way to go.

then what pray tell drags the rushing attack out of the cellar ? Hope and warm fuzzies ? Schaub getting hurt next year is almost a foregone conclusion.

I think you are over-rating the impact that a guy like Iupati could have on this team in his rookie season. There is no doubt that he would help, but to say that him being there means the difference between Schuab getting hurt or not is a stretch.

I'll go further, I believe and have believed that the only way they have a winning record with that schedule is by passing the top five Cbs and making a move for Thomas or Iupati. My preference would be Iupati because he would be instant ground attack. We would be able to combo block any DT-NT in the league and basically make the play action mean something. With out that, the play action pass, it won't be long before the DC's of the NFL catch up with Matt Schaub and his third down miracle throws. Earl Thomas will be able to cover all the warts of our corners. But according to McClain they ain't doing it so i guess from my perspective, all I have to look forward to is the inevitable train wreck of 2010. Which will be ok by McClain because he is at his best when the team is at their worst.

I know he didn't say much of anything, but hearing Smith talk really gives me confidence in his abilities and the abilities of the FO.
