Hey guys, I have a quick question. What's the average playing time per game as the weeks go forward. We played our starters approximately 1 qtr. last week and I imagine we will play them 1/2 game this week, so what happens in weeks 3 & 4? I don't see them playing 3/4 in week 3 & a whole game in week 4. Do they hardly play the starters the last week? Just curious because I don't remember from years past. I am having a brain fart & it seems like an eternity since last years preseason anyways. Thanks for any input. :tease:

Normally game one is one quarter, game two is the first half, game three is the first half and first series or two of the second. The fourth game the starters might play a quarter if even. Normally the backups play a majority of the game. As the starters will begin gearing up for opening day. With all that being said, Coach K has already said and backed up the fact that some will play more than others. Hope that helps.

That's pretty much it. There isn't any one set policy for playing time. Varies by team, coach, veteran status, and relevant depth chart position battles. In general though you see starters for a full half in weeks 2 and 3 and less in week 4.

Unless my memory has failed me this is also the first season where no cuts are required until after week 3 of the preseason. This could adust playing time in games 2 and 3 as more players will still be on the roster. Although, if they already know the players that won't be making the team I can't imagine giving them a lot of looks.

And there is a great deal of debate about the risk of preseason playing time. I, for one, am not a fan of the preseason. I would rather they extend the season one or two games by pulling from the preseason tank. With all the injuries that happen anyway, I'd rather have a player go down trying to score in the season.

    Just my :twocents:

Thanks everyone for the answers. I guess I'm just curious to see if it's worth going to the game to see the starters or just to go for the atmosphere.

I go for both. It's good to be at Reliant when they have the football field set up. :thumbup

While I like seeing our starters - especially this year - I also enjoy checking out some of the 2nd team and fringe guys. They always bust their rears out there trying to make the team, and while the plays might not be tight as when the starters play, you still get a lot of attitude out there.

    Basically, it's all good. :howdy:

The first pe-season game was only a quarter. This (second) pre-season game should be about the same as last weeks unless the 1st unit isn't doing very well and needs another quarter. The third pre-season game should be about a half. And the last (fourth) pre-seasson game should be about a quarter or less. that is to prevent any set backs like injuries before the season starts.

Bingo, we have a winner. I expect it will go very closely to what Hou-Tex has here.
