I predict an 8-8 season. Here is my reasoning: no depth a QB and RB, please don't reassure me about Orlovsky's potential. If it happens then great. Defense has not gotten any better, we stink a DT, and safety and will get exposed at CB.

Here is one joe sixpack armchair player evaluation of the new guys.

Barwin = real deal, might outshine mario one day.
    Cushing = don't know yet.
new cb's = jury is way out there.
    Smith = not impressed
new TE's = no better than the ones already here.
Grossman = waste of jersey and helmet.
    Orlovsky = Sage's younger brother.

My unprofessional opinion on some of the old guys.

Travis Johnson = bust (good luck sandiego)
Amobi = bust, can we get a 5th rounder out of him?
Dunta = future trade for someone useful.
Schaub = not the guy to get houston to the superbowl. Start looking for a trade.
Slaton = the cornerstone of the offense, but he needs help.

With the exception of Barwin Houston is no closer to a better defense.

8-8 that's how I see it, but then again all I have ever done on sunday is drink beer and cuss at the screen. Such is the life of a cradle saint fan and now hybrid texan fan.

I posted this in another thread, but thought it to be more appropriate here...

How many of these fans thought their teams where SB contenders, coming into the season after a mediocre or losing season?

Here are 11 teams, that have been in the SB since the 99 season. One team won with a 4-12 the season prior to making it all the way possessing the Lombardi Trophy. How optimistic where they?

4 teams went to the SB with a losing record the season before they made their appearance as Conferrance Champions.

9 teams without a winning record the season before made it, 3 actually won it.

3 9-7 teams the season before made it and 2 won it, should have been 3 but enough about the Seahawk/Steeler game eh...

Atlanta was 7-9 the season before going to the SB
Titans where 8-8 the season before going to the SB
Rams where 4-12 the season before winning the SB
Ravens where 8-8 year before winning the SB
Giants 7-9 the season before going to the SB
Patriots 8-8 the season before winning the SB
Tampa 9-7 the season before winning the SB with a new HC
Patriots 9-7 the season before winning the SB
Panthers 7-9 the season before going to the SB 1-15 the season before
Seahawks 9-7 season before the ref's gave the Steelers the SB
Giants 8-8 the season before they won the SB with a HC in the hot seat
Arizona 8-8 the season before going to the SB

How many of these fans where thinking breaking even would be a success prior to ther teams making to the play-off's after not only having a dismal season the year before, but having to go into this season with a coach who have never been a HC in this league? With new faces at the HC as well as QB position, the Ravens, Miami and Atlanta made it the play-offs last season.

Look at there standings the season before.
    Dolphins where 1-15
    Falcons where 4-12
    Ravens where 5-11

Step up to the plate and swing, on a scale of 1-10 how optimistic are you?

This is your chance to step up to the play and swing, tell us where you stand as far as your optimism goes.
    1-3 losing season.
    4-6 team will break even
7 team has a winning record
8 team will make it to the play-off's
9 team will win division and make it to the NFC Championship game
10 The Texans are SB contenders

Whoa... I am a huge Barwin fan, have been since the college football season, but no way he outshines Mario.

On Jags' scale, about a 7. I was an 8 before the pre-season though.

I'm an 8. I think all of the wrist slitting around because of preseason is just hilarious.

I find this list of teams fascinating.

Earlier in the off-season when we talked about how the Texans were progressing many said 8-8 was about the best that could have been done, and building slowly was the "right way". When those of us who thought that the Texans should show much faster improvement brought up this same list if teams, we were of course being totally unreasonable and (I fear) rather dense. We were told that these were all teams that had years of solid success and had one down year, and then bounced back. The Texans certainly shouldn't be expected to perform like them.

I'm glad to see perceptions are changing and more people are seeing it our way now.

Look back at the past few preseasons and you can see that a team's play in the preseason means nothing. Absolutely nothing. The key is to get through it with minimal injuries and knock the dust off.

2005 - The Colts were 0-5 in preseason and went 14-2 in the regular season. They were outscored in the preseason 72-143. They won the AFC South and lost to the Superbowl champion Steelers in the divisional round. The Washington Redskins were 1-3 in preseason and went 10-6 and earned a wildcard berth before losing to the Superbowl runner up Seahawks.

2006 - The Colts were 1-3 and then went 12-4 in the regular season before winning the Superbowl. The Saints went 1-3 in the preseason and went 10-6 in the regular season losing to the runner-up Bears in the Conference finals.

2007 - The Colts (again) were 1-3 before going 13-3 in the regular season. They lost to the Chargers in the divisional round. The Giants were 1-3 and then went 10-6 in the regular season to earn a wildcard berth. They ran the table in the playoffs, beating the unbeaten Patriots to win the Superbowl.

2008 - The Patriots go 0-4 in the preseason and finish the regular season 11-5. They miss the playoffs because the AFC West had to have 1 representative. The Colts (yes them again) 1-4 in preseason and yet they make the playoffs losing to the Chargers.

And the best one....the Lions went 4-0 in the preseason last season giving them their only 4 wins on the season. Woo hoo!!! :cow: They outscored their opponents 80-32.

What does this all mean? I really don't know, but I like typing. What I think is it is too early to drink kool-aid. They have some problems they need to shore up, but right now everyone does.

After two 8-8 records, are Texans due?

Not willing to venture a bet yet on whether we're on our way up or down, but I'd wager we won't repeat at .500.

Since 1978 eleven teams have had consecutive 8-8 seasons (if you count each year as a new team, ie. '01 Packers vs '02 Packers etc.).

2 of those teams went on to have a third 8-8 season
4 missed the playoffs (records ranging from 3-13 to 7-9)
4 made the playoffs (3 of 4 were division winners, records ranging 9-7 to 13-3)

And the 11th team will play out it's fate this year, Go Texans.

If nothing but the turnover ratio changes, we win another game or two. And the team has not had the same level of turnover problems so far that they had last year.

As much as I hate it, Manning might be one of the best to ever play and as long as he is playing we will all be second fiddle at best.

So, we have one of the top qb's in the National Football League and the OP thinks we should get rid of him?

    LOL. No words.
