After the Jets, Broncos, and Falcons pulled off a rare three-team deal, it got me to thinking about us and the draft. We would be greatly helped by getting Reggie Bush or Mario Williams but could also use some better/extra picks by trading down. However, we can't trade down too far because we'll probably lose out on both of them, even moving past #2 might be too far depending on what team ends up there. The Saints now don't need a QB after signing Drew Brees, and while they could stay at #2 and take Bush (if we don't take him), Mario Williams, or maybe D'Brickashaw Ferguson, A.J. Hawk would probably be the best fit for their team, but he's not worth the #2 pick. The Jets could be interested in trading up, especially with their two 1st round picks that they now possess. At #1 they could go for Leinart in case Pennington doesn't pan out or they could go for Reggie Bush as their big-time playmaker to complement Curtis Martin and eventually replace him. That said, what would you guys think about this trade and is there any chance it could be put together (I think we all know Casserly isn't going to put together a complex trade that doesn't rip us off, so it's up to the Saints or Jets FO):

    Houston:
Receives: #2 from Saints (2600 pts.), #29 from the Jets (640 pts.)
Gives up: #1 to the Jets (3000 pts.), #66 to Saints (260 pts.)

    New Orleans:
Receives: #4 from Jets (1800 pts.), #35 from Jets (550 pts.), #66 from Texans (260 pts.)
Gives up: #2 to Texans (2600 pts.)

    N.Y. Jets:
Receives: #1 from Texas (3000 pts.)
Gives up: #4 to the Saints (1800 pts.), #29 to Texans (640 pts.), #35 to Saints (550 pts.)

Thus, the Texans trade down from #1 to #2 and in turn get to move up from #66 to #29. This still leaves us guaranteed to get one of our two stud playmakers and may make our decision easier if Bush is taken at #1, and it gives us a late 1st round pick to grab someone like Nick Mangold and we are left with:
#2 (Still get whoever is left between Bush and/or Mario at a cheaper price)
    #29
    #33
    #65
    #97
    #129
    #161

The Saints move back two spots to make Hawk a more reasonable pick, they regain their 3rd rounder from us, and add the Jets #35 so they can fill two more holes and are left with:
#4 (A.J. Hawk is a more reasonable pick here)
    #34
    #35
    #66
    #98
    ...

The Jets move up to #1 and have their choice between Leinart and Bush depending on who they think is better for their team, but they lose out on their newly-acquired extra 1st rounder and their 2nd rounder and are left with:
    #1 (Leinart or Bush)
    #67
    #99
    ...

I like it. Highly improbable though it is. The problem I see with it is that is ALL draft picks. I think some teams might wanna enrich the deal with a couple of players. Especially with the way teams are trying to dump players.

But yeah that looks like a Win-Win for the Texans

It is quite improbable, however all the draft pick value points equal out (within 20 pts. of what each team is giving up and receiving), and I think all three teams could benefit by it as it maneuvers all three of them into what I think would be more desirable draft positions for each. Now all we need is for one of these three FOs to strike up negotiations.

Wow, This is a crazy idea and one I would file under crazy. Yeah if it worked I would extend Casserly for 3 more years, but I just cant see it, no way. Like you said Jets and Saints GM would have to come up with this and I just dont see them doing it. I believe that if the Saints stay they want Mario, but will take D'Brick depending on his ProDay yesterday. That leaves Mario for the Jets, because no way that the Titans let a guy like Leinhart slip through their hands. Did I say WOW already because that is what comes to mind when I see this. Damn this would be a pretty equal trade can we poach a 4th rounder or something to make it were we came out on top like Denver did.

Have you run the draft pick value scheme against a suitable number of actualized trades to see that it's actually followed over a number of drafts? I'm guessing it's just an guideline, and that many trades diverge substantially from the numbers, or include elements (players) that can't be calculated readily.

The numbers decline so steeply that they seem to be an impediment to our trading out of the first slot.

This is what would need to happen.

Lienart would need to put up an amazing pro day. This would give our pick enough worth to get a good trade, and would give the Jets a reason to want to move ahead of Tennessee.

Either way.. I dont see the Jets getting a wild hair up their butt and deciding that they need to trade the #29 and #35 to move up a few spots.. not unless Lienart really wows.

At the end of the day.. the Jets would have a new QB.. but will have lost Abraham and their second rounder to get him. Thats a pretty high price.

the jets have Chad Pennington and Patrick Ramsey right now on top of that they kept third stringer Brooks Bollinger. so they have two hurt QBs and one that never got a chance in Washington, but when he did was ok. I dont see them wanting Leinhart. We need Bush to blow people away come in at 210 and run a low-mid 4.3. Then we could entice the Jets to make the move. We only make the move if we are sure that the Saints are not going to take Mario Williams though. If they do we are then stuck with D'Brick and that is just not a good consolation prize.

i don't see why the Jets would give up #4, #29 and #35 just for the #1 pick
take out the #35 and it looks a lot better

The Texans are taking Bush with the first pick and then using the rest for defense. They want some young rabid turks on defense and established role players on offense to set up Reggie and AJ. Based on the recent acq of a blocking fullback, blocking possession TE and wideout I'd say it's set in stone.

I agree, however I think they use 2nd or 3rd round pick on OT

I don't know why the Jets would trade with us instead of New Orleans. Nobody is going to meet the team's demands. I think we set the bar at a Ricky Williams trade height. There is no reason for anyone to do it.

Now if someone of Carson Palmer's level was in this draft....

Well thought scenario....I could see New Orleans wanting to trade down ( their owner is cheap) ..the problem are the Jets...I don't see them giving up #29 and #35.

    New Orleans:
    #4
    #29
    #34
    #Jets 3rd from Broncos

    Texans:
    #2
    #33
    #65
    #66
    #68
    extra 4th from Saints

    Jets:
    #1
    #37
    4th rd.

Jets could trade back into 3rd ,using next year's picks.

Or we can give Jets a 2007 3rd,also.
Not sure, this would work value points wise....Value of picks this year is more valuable,I think.

Swap NO #29 with HOu #33.

    NO:
    #4
    #33
    #34
    Jets 3rd from Broncos

    Texans:
    #2
    #29
    #65
    #66
    #68
    extra 4th from NO

    Jets:
    #1
    #35
    4th round

just thought this was more equitable for us... get to move up into late 1st round, get extra 3rd and 4th which we can package to move into mid 2nd.
