inebacker Shawne Merriman's season is over for the San Diego Chargers.

San Diego placed Merriman on the Reserve-Injured list Wednesday with a calf injury and a "minor injury designation (less than six-week injury)." The designation means the Chargers must release Merriman when he becomes healthy.

The 26-year-old Merriman re-injured his calf in the Chargers' Week 5 loss against the Oakland Raiders. He has six tackles this season.

Merriman missed more than two weeks of training camp in protest of his status as a restricted free agent before reporting.

Nicknamed "Lights Out" because of his punishing hits, Merriman missed the final 15 games of the 2008 season after having reconstructive knee surgery. He was limited to four sacks last year as he bounced back from the knee surgery and dealt with other injuries.

Merriman was a force in his first three NFL seasons, although he served a four-game suspension in 2006 after testing positive for steroids. He had a career-high 17 sacks in 12 games that season.

    He probably overtrains too.

Rods and injuries aside, of the dudes "we should see if they have anything" threads, Merriman at least has a history of excellent production, not just name recognition. He actually is young enough to figure it w/o juice.

He had excellent production till he got suspended for steroids. Hasn't done much at all since then except get hurt alot.

Sure hope this is not a premonition of Cushing.

I would give him a look, but he'll become a Pat. Then they wont test him and he can bulk up again.

His best years were under Wade Phillips. I wonder if the Boys will make a run at him?

I believe the bottom - whiter picture - is the pre-steroid use.

The top is the one after he "supposedly" took performance-enhancing drugs.

Wouldn't mind a look. While his production has declined he's at least got the sideline to sideline speed I'd like to see at WLB.

I have a feeling though he'll go to a 3-4 team. Pats, Cowboys ( as someone pointed out his success under Phillips, or possibly Jets.

Why do you want to look at Merriman. He has done nothing the past 3 years.

    2010 - 5 tackles, 1 assis tackle
    2009 - 26 tackes, 10 assis tackles 4 sacks and 1 fumble recover
    2008 - 1 tackle and 1 assis tackle

Off the juice, he is not very good and cannot stay of IR.

    Why waste the time?

I'd take a look at Merriman if he were willing to come in as a pass rush DE.

Merriman has never been a DE though. Even in college he was a 3-4 OLB

Not sure what that has to do with using him as a pass rush end...Kinda like the hybrid role that Barwin played.

The picture where he was bigger is before, not after...
