Oilers offensive lineman Bruce Matthews and Houston native Thurman Thomas were among six former players elected to the NFL Hall of Fame today.

After a 6 1/2 hour meeting, The 40-member selection committee elected Matthews, Thomas, Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin, Browns guard Gene Hickerson, Lions tight end Charlie Sanders and Cardinals cornerback Roger Wehrli. Hickerson and Sanders were nominees of the seniors committee.

Matthews really deserves to be in the HOF. Not only a great player but a class person.

Bruce Matthews was one of my favorite players growing up. Even though he played in the trenchs he seamed to get plenty of air time. Thats not easy for a lineman. He was a throw back player that wore shot sleves in the cold and played the game for the passion not the money. He was a great community guy and I'm proud he is in the Hall on his first try. He was the epitmy of Luv Ya Blue and I got one more Oiler moment.

"The 6-foot-5, 291-pound Matthews spent 19 seasons with the team, moving from guard to center late in his career. He tied Merlin Olsen for most Pro Bowls appeared in with 14, nine as a guard and five as a center. He played in 296 career games, an NFL record for non-kickers. Mathews also set a record by starting 229 consecutive games. He never missed a game because of injury, but was sidelined by contract disputes in 1983 and 1987."

Very impressive stats. A great, dependable, tough player and a great standup citizen as well. Congrats to Bruce Matthews!

A class-act who deserves the HOF. It was players like him that I missed when the Oilers left.
