I was browsing the stats on NFL.com, and noticed they have Mario listed at 4.5 sacks.

I thought he had 5.5 sacks.... didn't he nail Charlie Frye in the endzone when Frye got hit for the intentional grounding?? don't they count that as a sack??

I wouldn't think a penalty play would get stats.

Interesting question...I always thought intentional grounding from the endzone was a safety...so what do I know :um:

It was at the 1 not the end zone.

I always thought they counted intentional grounding as a sack to the nearest defensive player. During the game on nfl.com, they initially gave Mario the sack and then they took it away.

I'm really bummed he didn't get that sack.

With the penalty, I don't think he gets a sack.

BTW, Jason Babin was our team sack leader with 5 sacks. :(

I was in the bullpen a few rows up and it def. looked like he was in the endzone from my view.

No, it's pretty clear in the replays that he wasn't in the end zone.

Peek, if healthy, could get 10 sacks

Peek is overrated. He's a decent player but he isn't anything more than a pass rusher on 3rd down plays. If he was an everyday player he would show it by now.

Same could be said for Dwight Freeney........... but some folks think he's a god.

Don't get too hung up on semantics or stats. It actually was more impressive than some that they call "sacks". Way to go, Mario! (Hope he's over his foot problem in 2007).

If it were a holding penalty by the offensive line, and the sack was for 5 yards, or 7 yards, we'd accept the penalty to back them up 10 yards.... the sack wouldn't count.

If Mario hit Frye with the crown of his helmet, he would have been called for roughing the passer, the sack wouldn't count.

But since intentional grounding is a penalty..... aimed at making it less attractive to QBs to avoid a sack..... the sack is generally awarded to the nearest defensive player, and the ball is spotted wher the QB was when he threw it. It is treated as if it were a sack...... loss of down included.

IIRC Mario first hit Frye at the 2 ... they gave him that forward progress ... no safety ... though yes my understanding of the rules is it should have been a sack.

Mario's 4.5 sacks ties another 1st overall defensive end draft pick, Courtney Brown.
