It's pretty much all summed up right here.

Z once again has nailed it. Exactly what I saw as well. The two specific players that he really leaves out as looking consistently bad were Bennett and Studdard. I still maintain that Studdard does seem to have an attitude that will help to make him a better player but from a capability standpoint I just don't see it. Neither does Lance from what I can tell:

Oddly, I have had concerns in the past but after Saturday (and apparently, this happened for Lance too) It really began to set in. Okoye isn't capable of playing that way. He's not good enough.

I was a bit surprised to see Okam starting in place of Robinson to begin the game. I'm not sure what Robinson did but he didn't see much action until very late in the game. I understand the coaches wanted to see what Okam could do as a starter after his play in KC, but he didn't do much of anything at all against the Saints. He looked like he was overmatched, and he didn't seem to give much effort or determination. I agree with LZ about Okoye, and I think the coaches would likely get more production out of him if he were used in passing situations with Smith moved inside next to him. I also agree with his assessment of the linebackers play. One thing is for sure if we don't get things fixed on the defensive side of the ball by next week the only action Farve is going to see is handing off to Peterson for a big gain up the middle.

Okoye got pushed around in the running game last year...this is no new news. I think everyone was hoping that his body would mature and something would change. I think the only thing that has changed is the fact that people are no longer interested in what he will be tomorrow because he can't handle NFL Guards today. He is pretty good when the play runs away from him because of his footspeed, but if you run right at him, he has to be the worst starting DT in the league. Easily.

I think it is news because he was injured last year. There was reason to believe with "another year in the system..." and "once he's healthy.." But he's supposedly healthy. Unless you ask him of course. So who knows. But you're right, all we have to go on is the film and it's looking like nothing has changed.

I'm curious as to how practicing against a finesse running game all the time leads to players not being used to smashmouth football. Playing DT against a light, zone blocking team all at practice can't really prepare you for the real thing.

So, how could a change in "scheme" fix this? :tiptoe:

While Denver had lighter than average O-lines, the Texans are not light. The only starter last year under 300 lbs was Myers (by one lb) and the guy they drafted as a potential replacement is another 14 lbs heavier.

schemes don't fix bad players, but we all know that right? Schemes can help players that aren't well rounded by only letting them play in situations that they can excel in, but you have to make them situational players.

Robinson probably didn't start because wasn't he the one that got the stinger last week? Plus Okam had a good game last week and maybe they just wanted to get a look at him on the 1st team. You never know in pre-season. That's why I don't get too worried about pre-season team stats, i.e. what the run defense did or I should say, didn't do Saturday night.
