I'm amazed at what a difference a year makes. Last year all the talking heads couldn't heap enough praise on some of the new coaching hires. Sean Payton and Eric Mangini were hoisted on the shoulders of every sportswriter and game show host with a laptop and declared the new Einstein's of the football world. Reggie Bush was polished and shined to a retina destroying luster and given the keys to a statistic all his own.....the "all purpose yard". Kubiak and company were pretty much off the radar. Mario was most certainly a bust and the Texans were just clueless.

Fast forward to today. The new Einstein's have taken their teams to 0-3 and 1-2 records. The Jets were called "overachievers" last year and the Saints success was due to "an emotional post Katrina high". Bush's stock has fallen faster than Enron. Wonder boy is now described as "a wasted pick on a scat back" who "shys away from contact" and "doesn't keep defensive coordinators awake at night".

Guess what? Kubiak and company. The new Einstein's! Mario was a fantastic pick! Getting Schaub from ATL? A stroke of genius!

What does all this mean? Well, obviously the sportswriters and talking heads were really the Einstein's all along. As they were making media darlings of the Saints, Jets, and WonderBoy last year, they secretly knew that this downfall was coming and only now are telling us the real truth. Kubiak and Smith really knew what they were doing last year but they decided to hold off on that information until now.

    Go figure....

It's all in the category of "What have you done for me lately?"

I would also like to make a prediction.

If we beat the Falcons on Sunday, please note that the media bandwagon will be crushed with the weight of newcomers eager to declare their own secret knowledge of our success this year.

However, should we lose to the Falcons, please note the sound of the many bandwagon members leaping into the abyss and declaring us as "overachievers" or that we were "riding the emotional wave of post Rita".

Well, I would consider that to be a good thing. All these bandwagoners can go take a flying jump as far as I'm concerned.

Some people call Bush over-rated. I tend to think of him as over-hyped.

it means they will talk up the coaches who's teams are playing well....try not to look too deep at something this shallow.

    Houston, again.
Often when one looks deeply at something that is shallow, one will see a pebble or perhaps, even a diamond!:shades:

The media goes with hype over fact, but too much fact is inevitably absorbed into the spin and it's made to sound like they knew it all along. The main thing the doomsayers thrive on is inconsistency. If we look good one week but bad the next they can keep riding the "still haven't put it all together" train. they don't have to know anything about the inconsistent team other than they are inconsistent. when we came out and convincingly beat KC and Carolina, they had to take notice or they would look like they don't know anything. we lose by 6 points to the world champs and they still have to spin it positive. As soon as we look inconsistent though they will backslide to their old jabs. I know one thing, if we lose to Atlanta regardless of our injuries, we will look inconsistent aka "bad" I don't really care what the media thinks or says personally, it all usually comes out in the wash. Your team wins consistently they will get respect, if not, they won't.

    Soooooooooooo so true.

And the scrutiny only gets more intense as teams/players continue to struggle.

But we're THREE games into the season. There are many media bobbleheads that are quick to declare seasons over at 0-3 and 1-2 (can anyone in the NFC truly say they're out of it given what we've seen so far from that conference???).

Now, expectations are so high, if Reggie Bush doesn't have a breakout game of 200 APR and 3 TDs and turning the Gatorade into wine during a time out, he's a bust. I think it will take weeks of SOLID games for him to fade from the "ZOMG DRAFT BUST!!!" spotlight. Remember...Mario's "bust" label was removed after the first game with his 2 sacks and fumble return for a TD. But what has he really done since?

That's not to say I don't think Bush was overhyped or that Mario still will come into his own. I'm just saying that sports fans and media seem to LOVE schadenfruede and reflected glory, and if you don't produce from week one, you're under the microscope.

All great points. The members of the media are the worst bandwagon jockeys around. But that, and creating controversy, are what they're paid for. "Try not to look too deep at something this shallow"....ROTFL; that is the most accurate statement regarding the media that I've read this year!
