HOUSTON -- Since Gary Kubiak became the Texans’ coach in 2006, every first-round pick has started as a rookie.

Defensive end Mario Williams, defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, offensive tackle Duane Brown, linebacker Brian Cushing and cornerback Kareem Jackson have started since Day 1.

JJ Watt is likely to start for the Texans -- every other first-round pick has under Gary Kubiak. (AP Photo)Defensive end J.J. Watt, this year’s No. 1 pick, has been handed the starting job on the left side in their 3-4 scheme. At 6-5, 290, Watt will move inside to tackle in passing situations.

Through the first week of camp, Watt has lived up to expectations. He consistently beats veteran offensive linemen in one-on-one drills. He beats double-teams in 11-on-11 drills. He’s explosive off the ball, never slows down and has a closing burst to the quarterback. He’s worked hard to improve using his hands.

Watt has something no other defensive lineman on the team has shown -- a knack for knocking down passes. He did it at Wisconsin, and he’s done it six times since training camp began. Now the coaches can’t wait to see what does in the first preseason game against the Jets.

Note: Cornerback Kareem Jackson, last year’s No. 1 pick, started 16 games. He was second in the NFL in yards allowed. He didn’t show the kind of makeup speed or ball skills the best corners need. Jackson is mentally tough. He can cover. He plays the run well, but he allowed too many completions down the field. Since camp began, he’s shown a lot of improvement, but he’s still inconsistent down the field. If he’s not careful, Jackson could lose his starting job to Jason Allen, who’s having an excellent camp, according to his coaches.

Man, they aren't playing around anymore. I love it! No more free rides.

Damn they really are serious this year. This team is actually acting like a legit NFL franchise this offseason. :)

And if the Texans win, I'm sure that is not all they will be lighting up.
