On December 31st at approximately 3:15 pm central time, the Texans began to take on the Off-Season without GM Rick Smith at NRG Stadium and the Texans corporate offices. The off-season will be aired locally on houstontexans.com and nationally on nfl.com.
What we have all been waiting for is an off-season without Rick Smith. Lets hope that Bill O'brien and who ever steps in as general manager can handle the off-season starting with free agency and continuing on into the draft and supplements.
Let's not think about the idea that Smith might be back in a year. Lets just look forward to being without him for this year.
Let's hope that O'brien and the stand in GM can make something out of the debacle that Smith left them.
Looks like most of the work will need to be done in free agency since Smith squandered the first 2 rounds of the draft because of that Osweiler character.
Lets hope that they can build a team that we'll be proud of and can enjoy watching once again.
    Now on to the Off-Season!

    GO TEXANS!

For the love of all that's holy the Texans gave up the 2nd round pick related to Oz. No 1st round pick was involved.

The 1st was to get Watson.

The Texans wouldn't have needed Watson if they hadn't bombed so badly on Osweiler. They had to move up to get Watson because they had no options on the roster. Getting rid of Osweiler with that second round pick because of the disaster he was caused them to have to give the first round pick to get Watson. Aside from that, there have been multiple drafts Smith passed up good quarterbacks to take the "best player available". Not only that, Smith has only ever gotten 1 good offensive lineman. Brown. Other then that he had whiffed on building the o-line. Let's not even start on the secondary. I'm just glad Smith is gone. At least for the time being.

Yep. And we've already fired some worthless coaches, so things are looking up. Maybe, or hopefully at any rate.

What about Wade Smith, Chris Myers, Briesel, Eric Winston, Brandon Brooks? There was a period there where we had arguably the best OL in the game.

But McNair didn't put his foot down until after the '15 season... it was Oswseiler or Lynch. They took the path of least resistance. Os gave them a chance, Lynch practically none

I don't think he has a scheme .... at all.

Watson just made those plays the waterboy drew up on the sidelines look good .... while OB took all the credit.

It might be time for O'Brien to look at a ZBS. He's in an OL crisis with no immediate answers readily available from the FA market. Not to mention, most of the college OL entering the draft might make quicker transition into a ZBS versus a power system. O'Brien altered his playbook to accomondate Watson's comfort level. The offensive system that worked with Watson might be what benefits the Texans future OL as well. Just a thought.

I agree but don't think OB does. Despite a few weeks of adaptation with Watson, OB has not demonstrated flexibility during his tenure. The only time we have seen any is when we are in crisis mode because the QB doesn't know 'the system' well enough.

...and this is exactly why I agreed with you, when you mentioned Frank Reich's name for the OC position. I could see Watson becoming an absolute beast in that style of offense. It plays into every strength he has displayed in 7 short games...even though, a lot of what he displayed was an improvised, run for my life while keeping my eyes downfield sort of offense, it was successful. I'd really like the idea of speeding that up with some no-huddle sprinkled in...so it kept defensive substitutions to a minimum.

I said he whiffed on building the o-line. That means he had a chance to keep the linemen you just mentioned, but they all left after those couple of years for bigger and better contracts. So yes. He whiffed on the o-line except for keeping Brown as long as he did.
