Draft Eve, what are you thinking on the first pick now that all the info is out?

I've got us taking Mattews in my mock also. I've got us trading down with the Eagles so they can knab Moreno and we still get Matthews. At 15 we still take Mattews unless someone like Raji or Curry fell to them.

FWIW ... LZ says his sources say Ryans can't run . He didn't tell me that but he wrote it .

Some scout saw him limp around in a game last year while he was injured and then went back and looked at his 40 time at the combine... That's how someone arrives at that conclusion.

As fans, we've watched him play every week for 3 years now. I think it is safe to assume that Demeco would do just fine on the outside. He has been good in the open field and has only appeared slow when he's been banged up. I haven't always been happy with his downfield coverage but I expect improvement this year with the new staff.

And, I think Vinny and I agree on this, if the weakness of our defense is that our LBs can be beaten by the pass on running downs, I'm thinking we can live with that!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Clay Matthews - OLB - I think he's more durable than Cushing plus he's got more upside . He's also a great special teams player .

2. Alphoso Smith - CB - This pick I to used the cherry picking device some . A good player who's a bit undersized , provides Dunta insurance .

3. Chip Vaughn - SS - last of a dying breed . A 6'1 220 pounder who runs a 4.4 forty . When you play the Titans and Jags twice a year ... you need a SS who brings the lumber .

4. Rashad Jennings - RB - Compliment to Slaton

4b. Tyrone Green - G - Give me an SEC Guard any day of the week .

5. Nate Davis - QB- Good value plus a talented guy to develop cause you never know about Schaub .

6. Henry Melton - DE - has the potential to be a good pass rusher .

7. Tyrell Sutton - RB - After Slaton , we're kinda thin at RB . Sutton is a smart , hard working guy , who's more quick than fast . I watched him in the Alamo Bowl vs Missouri and he looked like the fastest guy on the field ... hmmm .

Check out this SS that could probably be had in the 5-7 rd.

What I would like is trade back, and draft BPA. Jenkins would be good if there at 15. If we have to take a LB at 15 Rey better than Matthews or Cushing. I will probably be OK with anyone except Cushing or Wells at 15. Would be happy with a RB with 1st round. Everyone is talking compliment to Slaton. Slaton was to be the compliment back originally and I think that is the way it needs to be now. I just don't think Slaton can take the pounding. Don't make Slaton the workhorse back. At least get equal or better back to carry load. Moreno or D. Brown good, really not high on Wells (injuries). I guess you can tell I don't like injury prone players.
Trade back and get extra picks again is what I hope happens if Jenkins gone at 15. Under no circumstances do I want to tradeup (Babins). The draft is a crapshoot , the more good chances the better. Again just my opinion. P.S. I do trust that Smith/Kubiak will make the right decision vs previous id***s.

I say Cushing because he is my least favorite option and I am trying a reverse jinx.

That being said I am not all that down on him, he is just not my favorite option for reasons that I cannot quantify. (gut)

If Smithiak does end up drafting him I'll be 100% for him as a Texan. For now, he is just a Trojan.

At the 15 spot, given our offseason moves, I really can't think of a scenario that would get me upset.

No longer a Trojan...now a Texan. I'm on board.

Can't believe I just read this thread from start to finish. I take it none of you guys work for the TEXANS! lol

I like the Ryans/Maualuga/June-Adibi linebacker corp over the Cushing/Ryans/June-Adibi group because you could use the loser in the June/Adibi battle as your nickel and dime linebacker and bring a tremendous run stopping unit to bear on early down and distances with a tackling machine like Ryans on one side of a thumper like Rey Maualuga.

I'd move Ryans all over the field to exploit mismatches. Ryans is great at shooting the gap, plays well in space and has blitzing skills that he can't showcase while in the middle. I'd just stick him in the middle in obvious passing situations.

I've posted these thoughts in a few threads but I figure I'd start this thread to check back on later in the year.

OTA later. since I had shut it down draft eve (feeling of impending doom) I've since come to the realization the combination of Cushing/Barwin is going to be more productive than any one, highly touted defensive impact player available in the 09 draft which was afterall their priority need.

  • Texans are now quicker
  • more athletic
  • & physical
  • dynamic pass rush capability
  • improved run defense
  • simplified learning curve
  • assigned specific resposibilities

Going into training camp Brian Cushing is your Houston Texans starting SAM. impact player, looking solid in practice, extra style points for going Mohawk. the pick looks like the absoulte best it could be given team needs. also no news on any kind of nagging injurys during TC, all systems go up to this point. A

Connor Barwin, is athletic & quick as advertised. work in progress, shows flashes which in pass rushing situations, special teams surely he contributes as a rookie & develops into a dynamic defensive playmaker . B

Looks like they will use Ryans more in blitzing situations like I wanted. I'm more excited about Cushing now though.
