Would you let Dunta walk and use the money to help pay for Peppers?

We use our 1st in the Peppers trade. Draft Sean Smith in the 2nd rd & Micheal Hamlin in the 3rd.

If we do the trade we end up with Peppers, S. Smith & M. Hamlin

If we dont do the trade we end up with Robinson, Cushing type player, S.Smith & M. Hamlin

    What would you do?

I'd like to have the Peppers/Smith/Hamlin combo (or BPA at CB and safety in each round). Aside from Everette Brown, who probably won't be available, I don't see anyone coming in and making an immediate impact on defense.

Assuming we could make a deal with Peppers, our defensive line would be one of the most athletic and talented in the league from the first snap in 2009. I think the common consenses here on this board is that a great defensive line can make an average secondary look good, or the exact opposite. With Barber at SS, Bennett, Reeves, Molden at CB I think we'd be good enough.

However, it would be very tough to lose the leadership of Dunta Robinson. Who else would step into that role? Demeco is already a leader, but can we count on Reeves to lead the secondary? Maybe Nick Ferguson and Eugene Wilson can serve as the "Aaron Glenns" to our young secondary. It would be a tough pill to swallow, but I think it would allow us to counter the good offensive lines in the AFC South, paticularly the Titans and Colts.

Peppers is an unrestricted free agent.

    Would he:
    1. Be signed be Carolina to a long-term deal and then traded to us for a 1st rounder?
    2. Be franchise tagged (exclusive) and then traded for a 1st rounder? I don't know the Cap implications of this.
    3. Be franchise tagged (non-exclusive) and then free to negotiate a deal with us? If we reach a deal, we'd have to give Carolina two 1st rounders.

We would agree to a new contract with Peppers then Carolina would tag him & trade him to us. We would remove the tag & sign him to the previously agreed on cotract.

    OMT would you do it?

I say there is no way that the panthers franchise Peppers as he would have to make 20% more than is already staggering 14 million salary he had this year. Just does not make sense.

If anybody caught the probowl yesterday, Peppers said he DOES NOT want to stay in Carolina. I would pass on Dunta if it meant we get Peppers.

I think Peppers is looking to break the bank.

This may not be the most prudent thing to do for a player that doesn't play hard all of the time.

The same things were being said when Reggie White signed with the Packers.

That turned out all right for the Packers though.

I don't want Dunta going anywhere either, but do you think he's worth top-5 CB $? (what it'll cost us to franchise him if we can't reach an agreement)

I think we can draft a CB & S in the 2nd or 3rd rds. (Like A. Smith or S.Smith).

The pass rush we get from MW & JP should help the secondary immensely.

I also think a A. Smith is better than an 80% D.R. IMO

With a healthy cap good guy of ~30m (potential cuts of Greenwood, Weaver, C. Brown, Green & Demps give us more), Robinson, Daniels and a rookie class to sign this year; and Ryans and Pitts to work on next year why would not we have enough to bring in Peppers with some fuzzy math?

It's a great question and I havn't fully wrapped my head around it. I've got to think about it some more. But from the Texans' standpoint, it's essentially this: "Would you trade Dunta Robinson and our 2010 1st round pick for Julius Peppers?"

I would say Franchise Dunta Robinson and then go after Julius Peppers as our big free agent signing. Then we can work a trade for maybe a 1st round & 3rd pick for Dunta and draft a young healthy corner with good knees with that 1st round pick and go after the best free safety in round two. Guys we have a lot of options if we put the franchise tag on Dunta and really look to move him plus that would be the cheapest route to pay a rookie first round pick.

The texans could pair the rookie corner with maybe a Bryant Mcfadden who is a free agent and who just played in the super bowl won't be to expensive but to get a guy like Julius Peppers in free agnecy would change our defense over night.

This isn't Madden franchise mode. You won't get a 1st and a 3rd for Dunta and you also can't guarantee you'll find a better CB using your 1st round pick either.

I've never been as big a fan as DR as most of the posters here. He doesn't get as many picks as the elite CB's and I can't recall him really shutting down a receiver like Aso did to AJ this year. To me, him and rookie year Fred Bennett are pretty similar.

Dunta Robinson is one of my favorite texans..he is right up there with Mario, Meco, and AJ..

However.. this is a business and as much as id like to BELIEVE that Dunta is back and 100%.. I did not see him making a huge impact on the field after he came back.

Dont get me wrong..he was definitely solid..and I dont recall any QB we went up against having the balls to test Dunta on a regular basis.

In my opinion.. Dunta is a top 15 corner.. not a top 5. It pains me to say that cause I want to believe he is #1. I think he is CAPABLE of top 5.. but he will need to improve his game.

All that being said.. if he wants top 5 money.. we just cant do it. Especially if by not taking him we can get Peppers.

I look at it this way... either we sign Peppers and use our 1st round pick on a CB.. or we sign Dunta and use our first round pick on a DE.

    Which do you prefer?

Peppers & 1st rd pick on CB
    or
Dunta & 1st rd pick on DE

I think id prefer Peppers and the CB... because Peppers and Mario would be sick.. and we have had bad luck with every defensive lineman we have drafted except Mario.

Though the jury is still out on Amobi.
